The color master tape of this episode was wiped by the BBC in the 1970s and the BBC only held a 16mm black and white telerecording. The episode remained only in black in white until the 1990s, when the color signal from a domestic NTSC recording and the black and white telerecording were used to create a new color master on D3 digital tape.

We learn a great deal about The Silurians, terrific episode.

The Doctor and Liz excavate the caves, and discover a Silurian base.

The Silurians were a great creation, they had an interesting culture, and an interesting place in Earth's history. I felt they peaked here, and steadily declined with future appearances, Warriors of the Deep, then The Hungry Earth. These early Silurians were well designed, helped by some subtle lighting.

There is some real depth to this part, a great deal of rich content, lots happening above and below the Earth's surface.

Geoffrey Palmer arrives as the permanent undersecretary Masters, he's great.

Best episode yet. 9/10
