Over the course of 20 years and 10 movies, the "Saw" franchise has delivered some seriously disturbing traps. Initially created by Jigsaw/John Kramer (Tobin Bell), a terminally ill man who believes he's able to deliver a kind of morally superior justice through his complicated and brutal puzzles, the traps are probably the franchise's greatest draw. There are devoted fans who dive deep into franchise lore and can easily explain the entire complex "Saw" timeline, of course, but the average movie goer just wants to see what kind of twisted, gory traps the filmmakers have come up with in each installment. It's like the "Final Destination" films and their increasingly complex, Rube Goldberg-like deaths, as both franchises lean into creative and horrifying deaths, occasionally with some level of humor or wry wit peppered in. The "Saw" movies have some truly great traps, like the pit of needles in "Saw II" and...

Tobin Bell owns a metal briefcase that he uses to house nine composition books, each one containing the notes he took to prepare to play John Kramer, a.k.a. Jigsaw, in the movies that make up the Saw franchise.. Soon, he’ll start taking notes in a tenth book, because Saw XI is on track for a September 26, 2025 release – and he has confirmed to the LA Times that Kramer is “a main part” of the latest sequel.
The LA Times reports that the first page of the notes Bell took for the original Saw “includes a drawn spiral interrogating the likes, dislikes and motivations” of his character. The other pages “are occupied by a series of questions about the character. They start with the most basic details — ‘Where am I?’ for example — and evolve into increasingly specific queries until they form an inverse triangle brimming with insight he’s deciphered on his own.

At one point, Saw VI director Kevin Greutert was on board to direct a slasher movie called All My Friends Are Dead… but then Greutert got busy working on Saw X and ended up handing the helm over to Marcus Dunstan – the director of The Collector and The Collection and co-writer of Saw VI. All My Friends Are Dead, which is now going by the full title #Amfad: All My Friends Are Dead, went into production a year ago with Dunstan at the helm, and now it’s aiming for an August 2nd theatrical, digital, and VOD release. With that date just three weeks away, a trailer for the film has arrived online and can be seen in the embed above.

Actor Meagan Good was known for starring in lighthearted projects like Cousin Skeeter at the start of her career. She has since branched out to include a variety of movies in her resume. But she might be understated as a horror movie star as well, having starred in her fair share of slashers and paranormal films. This made sense, however, as it was the Halloween franchise that inspired Good to be an actor in the first place.

As is the case with many actors, Good knew that she wanted to be involved in the film industry as a child. But she told Cigar & Spirits that it was all a matter of how badly she wanted to pursue a career in film.

Saw XI writer Marcus Dunstan recently provided an update on the ongoing development of the popular horror franchise's upcoming eleventh installment, slated for a September 26, 2025 release date. According to his conversation with Screen Rant, Saw XI is an "angry" film with "something new to say."
Dunstan previously co-wrote the scripts for Saw IV, Saw V, Saw VI, and Saw 3D with fellow scribe Patrick Melton. He's returning alongside director Kevin Greutert. In addition to directing the acclaimed tenth film Saw X, Greutert also directed Saw VI and Saw 3D.
Grossing more than $1.1 billion worldwide, Saw is a mega-popular horror franchise originally conceived by Leigh Whannell and James Wan, who produced the original 2004 film that introduced us to the twisted mind of John Kramer and his serial killer alias Jigsaw.

As soon as Saw X, the tenth entry in the Saw franchise (you can read our review Here), was released last September, franchise producers Mark Burg and Oren Koules were already talking about the potential of a Saw XI. The official announcement came in December, along with a release date: September 27th… but they’ve decided to take a little extra time with this one, so a couple months ago it was announced that Saw XI won’t be reaching theatres until September 26, 2025. The script is still in the works, though, and now we know the name of at least one person behind it: Marcus Dunstan, who says this is going to be an “angry” film.

If it’s Halloween, it must be Saw. Unfortunately, the franchise isn’t returning to theaters this coming Halloween season, but new sequel Saw XI is headed our way for Halloween 2025.
The games return to theaters on September 26, 2025, with Saw X director Kevin Greutert returning to direct the upcoming Saw XI. Fellow franchise alum Marcus Dunstan is co-writing the script, and Dunstan teases in a new chat with Screen Rant this week that the “angry” new movie has something new to say.
Dunstan tells the outlet, “We’re writing XI right now, and Kevin Greutert is returning to direct.” He continues, “That’s one where it’s got something new to say, and it’s angry.”
Last year’s Saw X brought both Jigsaw (Tobin Bell) and Amanda (Shawnee Smith) back for a sequel cleverly set between the original film and its first sequel. The franchise’s return was a big time hit for Lionsgate,...

The Saw franchise is a blockbuster horror series though the first seven entries have been something of a mixed bag in terms of reviews from critics and audiences. Jigsaw, the 2017 reboot, struggled to capture the glory of previous Saw movies. The traps were less ingenious, and the movie moved away from the satirical nature of the original series, making it less playful. Spiral: From the Book of Saw, while lacking Tobin Bell's Jigsaw, attempted to evolve the franchise beyond a character that died six movies ago. It starts slow but goes full Saw eventually. The final twist was predictable, making it a good but not great movie.
The Saw movies rank as one of the most successful and influential horror franchises of the 21st century, although the Saw movies ranked greatly varies. Saw premiered in 2003, and the massive hit propelled filmmaker James Wan into the Hollywood mainstream. Two years...

Hulu has to be pretty pleased with its list of new releases for June 2024. That’s because it’s about to be the summer of The Bear once again.
The Bear season 3 premieres all of its episodes on June 27 on Hulu. This FX dramedy has proven to be one of the most successful shows of its era. Jeremy Allen White stars as Carmy Berzatto, a world-famous chef who returns home to Chicago to help his floundering family restaurant after the death of his brother. Season 2 saw The Original Beef of Chicagoland crew transform the spot into fine dining establishment The Bear. It ruled. So will season 3 probably.
FX is responsible for the other major TV release on Hulu this month. Clipped premieres on June 4 and is about the scandalous real life story of Donald Sterling, the awful owner of the basketball team the Los Angeles Clippers. Another intriguing TV option...

Not to be confused with the 1986 Gary Paulsen novel that was on your fifth-grade reading list, Adam Green's 2007 slasher "Hatchet" was intended to be an homage to the plentiful stalk-and-kill movies from the 1980s. The first "Hatchet" takes place deep in the swamps of Louisana where feckless city-dwellers get lost while taking a swamp tour. They trade stories of Victor Crowley, a local kid with facial differences who, years ago, was trapped in a burning house set ablaze by prankster teens. Crowley was accidentally killed by his father when he recklessly used a hatchet to free him from the fire. Victor's spirit is now said to haunt the swamp and murder interlopers. Of course, Victor will appear to start the predicted murders.

20 years ago, Saw made an indelible impact on the horror genre. Not only did it usher in the so-called “torture porn” subgenre that would become synonymous with the aughts, but it also launched the career of filmmaker James Wan, who has firmly cemented his place among the masters of horror with follow-ups like The Conjuring and Insidious.
In the two decades since, the lucrative franchise has spawned nine sequels — 2005’s Saw II, 2006’s Saw III, 2007’s Saw IV, 2008’s Saw V, 2009’s Saw VI, 2010’s Saw: The Final Chapter, 2017’s Jigsaw, 2021’s Spiral: From the Book of Saw, and 2023’s Saw X — with a worldwide box office total of over $1 billion.

Director Kevin Greutert, who directed Saw X and other previous sequels, is reportedly returning to helm the confirmed Saw 11. Greutert's return could be good news for the upcoming sequel as Saw X is the best-received installment in the franchise since the original. The departure of Saw X writers Josh Stolberg and Pete Goldfinger is potentially worrying, however.
Saw 11 has now found its director, according to a new report, and it's a franchise veteran. After the success of the first film in 2004, the Saw franchise has gone on to become one of the longest-running horror properties, following Jigsaw (Tobin Bell) as he punishes different victims using elaborate torture traps. Gay cinema certainly has turned a corner lately, in the wake of films as varied as Cassandro, Rustin and All of Us Strangers, stories in which the lead character’s sexuality might form a crucial part of the tapestry of the drama but isn’t the be-all and end-all. Leading the vanguard for the next generation is this confident debut from 33-year-old British-Iraqi director Amrou Al-Kadhi, a frank and emotionally honest portrait of someone who falls outside society’s boxes and steadfastly refuses to conform to them. This emphasis on the positive is sometimes counterintuitive (more on that later), but, thanks to its core cast, Layla is an engaging study of love in the pronoun era.

Saw X's success with John Kramer as the lead suggests that Saw XI will likely continue this trend. Mark Hoffman's appearance in the mid-credits scene of Saw X sets him up as the next apprentice to appear in a Saw movie. Logan Nelson, Kramer's first apprentice, would be a better option to explore in the story of Saw XI, filling in the gap in their working relationship and bringing back a character that is more similar to Kramer in personality.
Though Saw X sets up one character's return, Saw XI needs to bring back a different Jigsaw apprentice. John Kramer's back in the front seat as the Jigsaw Killer with the assistance of his apprentice Amanda Young in the 2023 film Saw X. The film was expected to flop because it turned Kramer into a hero, but it did exceptionally well, grossing 111 million dollars against a 13 million dollar budget...

What began as a simple two-hander about strangers chained in a squalid bathroom, enduring the twisted games of a mysterious tormentor, has evolved into an intricate saga spanning nearly twenty years and ten gruesome films. With every new "Saw" movie, the traps become bigger and more brutal, the timelines increasingly jumbled, and the twists even more mind-boggling. Each "Saw" entry delves deeper into (and complicates) the maniacal Jigsaw philosophy that forces people to confront their sins and appreciate the life they've been given.
Often regarded as part of the controversial horror subgenre "torture porn" (even though we may need to retire that term forever), the "Saw" films feature graphic depictions of mutilation and extreme violence in elaborate devices that are not for the faint of heart. No good villain is ever truly gone, especially in horror movies. This September saw the return of Tobin Bell as John Kramer, a.k.a. “Jigsaw,” the trap-making serial killer of the Saw movies, with the release of Saw X. This is despite the fact that Kramer has been dead since the end of Saw III, which came out back in 2006. But a little thing like death never stopped the Saw franchise. Instead of literally bringing Kramer back from the dead, the subsequent sequels continued Bell’s participation with devices like flashbacks. Hell, even Saw IV played a trick on audiences by staging a lot of its action at the same time as Saw III.
One of those post-Kramer sequels celebrates its 15th anniversary this year: Saw V, which featured Costas Mandylor as Detective Mark Hoffman, a murderous cop who became Jigsaw’s protégé and continued his campaign of bloodshed.

Saw X is the 10th installment in the Saw franchise and features the return of Tobin Bell as John Kramer, the Jigsaw Killer. It takes place between the first two movies and follows Kramer seeking vengeance on con artists who tricked him with a fake medical operation. The movie introduces a mystery detective character named Mark Hoffman, who has a significant role in the overall franchise. Hoffman, an apprentice of Jigsaw, becomes Kramer's successor as the new Jigsaw Killer. Despite his official introduction in Saw IV, it's revealed in Saw V that Hoffman was brought under Kramer's wing much earlier. Mark Hoffman makes a surprise appearance in Saw X's mid-credits scene, where he assists Kramer in trapping Henry, a friend who was part of the con operation. This scene suggests that while most of the movie is set in Mexico, Hoffman likely worked on Henry's punishment in the US...

The chronology of the "Saw" movies is massively complicated, and only the most dedicated researchers have dared to map out when certain events occur. Everything surrounds the vengeful trap-builder Jigsaw, aka John Kramer (Tobin Bell) a character who actually died at the end of Darren Lynn Bouseman's "Saw III," but who still appeared in several sequels thereafter. Baffling chronologies have been a feature of the "Saw" movies from the start, with James Wan's 2004 original told mostly in flashback. Indeed, one of those flashbacks also had a flashback in it.
As far as a casual observer might tell, the films take place in the following order: "Saw," then the new "Saw X," then "Saw II." "Saw III" and "Saw IV" take place over roughly the same period, with interacting timelines. The rest seem to take place more or less numerically, although each one features additional flashbacks and appearances from Bell.

A new chapter in the “Saw” franchise is here.
In preparation for the milestone tenth film, we have a rundown of where you can see the previous “Saw” just in time for “Saw X.”
It all started in 2004 as an idea conjured up by James Wan and Leigh Whannell, two bestie Australian filmmakers who were fresh out of film school and eager to make a name for themselves in Hollywood.
The first “Saw,” which Whannell wrote and Wan directed, premiered on Oct. 29, 2004. Whannell, who also starred as Adam in the first film, went on to direct the next two films. “Saw III” ended up becoming the highest-earning film from the franchise ($165 million globally), per The Numbers.
The inspiration behind the film was rooted in one of Whannell’s real-life experiences. During an interview with the Av Club, Whannell said that at the age of 24, he started to have severe migraines,...

The tenth installment in Lionsgate’s long-running horror franchise, Saw X is playing in theaters nationwide, and Lionsgate is surely happy with the box office results over the weekend.
Saw X scared up a reported $18 million in its opening weekend here in the United States, with the new movie’s worldwide total sitting at $29,300,000 just days into its release.
That $18 million domestic number marks the franchise’s highest opening weekend since Saw 3D back in 2010, and it also matches the $18 million opening of the original Saw in 2004.
An $18 million opening weekend is a far cry from the franchise-high $33 million opening of Saw III, mind you, but it’s also the strongest the series has been in over 10 years. The decision to ditch the convoluted continuity of the later films in the franchise and instead bring back Tobin Bell and Shawnee Smith with a simplified, back to basics approach was a smart one.

Takeaway 1: The Saw franchise features a range of traps, from easy to impossible, that keep fans captivated. Takeaway 2: Some of the franchise's iconic traps can be beaten without Jigsaw's intended solutions, while others are impossible without luck or malfunction. Takeaway 3: The traps in the Saw series vary in complexity and effectiveness, with some being relatively easy to survive and others designed for murder.
The Saw franchise offers a wide variety of traps from the easiest Saw traps almost anyone could escape to the impossible Saw traps that are basically a death sentence. With nine movies released over the span of 17 years, the Saw series has become a staple of the horror genre. Though the films vary wildly in terms of quality, the intense levels of gore featured in each installment ensure that fans will never relinquish their morbid fascinations while debating the easiest Saw traps and impossible Saw traps.

It’s hard to overstate just how big the “Saw” movies were in the 2000s. The original low-budget horror film is about a serial killer who forces his victims to mutilate themselves to survive his deathtraps was such a hit that every single year, a new sequel would come out for Halloween season. And every single year, it printed money.
But although the many “Saw” films rely on an easily repeatable premise, they’re not formulaic films. Indeed, they’re highly unusual in their scope and ambition, telling a multilayered story across many timelines simultaneously, with a vast mythology and a complex moral code. There’s a genuine ingenuity to most of the “Saw” movies that can take your breath away, whether you get wrapped up in its grotesque world or simply marvel at how ambitious it gets.

The end of September will feature a whopping four major wide releases. Sony is expanding “Dumb Money” after a few weeks of platforming. 20th Century Studios’ “The Creator” earned $1.6 million in previews while Lionsgate’s “Saw X” earned $2 million in Thursday previews.
That “Saw” figure is better — sans inflation — than the $1.6 million earned by “Jigsaw” in October of 2017 and the $1.7 million earned by “Saw 3-D” in October of 2010. “Spiral: From the Book of Saw” earned $750,000 in its previews amid a Covid-era May debut in 2021.
With shockingly good reviews and a strong reaction thus far by fans of the long-running grindhouse series, Lionsgate is hoping for an opening weekend at least on par with the $17 million Fri-Sun debut of “Jigsaw.”
Sure, the first four sequels opened with over/under $30 million. However, “Saw V” — the franchise’s last mega-opener — debuted 15 years ago, amusingly against the $42 million launch of “High School Musical: Senior Year.

Saw X executive producers reflect on the decision to kill off Jigsaw in Saw III, admitting that it was a mistake. Although John Kramer dies in the third movie, he continues to be a fixture of the franchise and has appeared in almost every subsequent installment, mostly through flashbacks. This structure has made the overarching story a little confusing. Saw X takes place between the events of Saw II and Saw III, but the best way to experience the franchise, generally speaking, is still to watch the movies in the order that they were released.

The past two weekends have been rough for theaters, as the riches of “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer” have worn off and overall grosses have fallen to levels not seen since mid-February. Fortunately, a trio of new genre films are here to bring some business back.

In 2007, the "Saw" franchise took a very big swing with the aim of setting the movies up for years to come. Darren Lynn Bousman returned to the director's chair for the third time with "Saw IV," which aimed to move beyond Tobin Bell's John Kramer by giving Jigsaw a path forward without the man who started these twisted, bloody games in the first place. The film's ending not only offers one of the biggest twists in the entire series — but also one of the most important. Divorced of everything that came after, it was a big, bold, critical change in direction.

Saw X takes place "weeks after" the events of the original Saw. The producer sees this new movie as essentially Saw II. This timeline allows for the return of Jigsaw and Amanda Young, who are both deceased characters.
A producer for Saw X has clarified where in the timeline the new horror sequel takes place. The movie, which is the tenth in the ongoing Saw franchise, features the return of the engineering genius killer Jigsaw (Tobin Bell), who died during the events of 2006’s Saw III. Saw X takes place before that time, allowing the likewise deceased Jigsaw acolyte Amanda Young (Shawnee Smith) to make an appearance as well.
In anticipation of the official Saw X release date of September 29, Bloody Disgusting shared a quote from producer Oren Koules on Twitter that clarifies exactly when the new movie will take place.

Saw X is the first direct prequel in the Saw franchise, bridging the gap between the first and second movies and providing backstory for the Jigsaw Killer. Flashbacks and interwoven narratives make the Saw movies challenging to follow chronologically, but the release order keeps the story coherent and allows for new insights and twists as the series progresses. The release order of the Saw movies is the best way to watch for first-time audiences, as it follows the intended storytelling structure and gradually increases in violence and gore.
Saw X marks the tenth installment in the Saw movie franchise, but thanks to some non-linear storytelling and jumping around on the timeline, there are plenty of different ways to actually watch this series. The first few movies were extremely influential for their time, transitioning from the psychologically oriented genre of horror that was popular into a more violent, physical horror that consequently rose to success.

Annabelle: Creation improved on its predecessor and revitalized the Annabelle franchise with a scarier, more inventive sequel. Saw VI cleared up the messy storyline and injected new life into the ailing Saw series, focusing less on extreme gore and more on the story.
