Conclave emerged the favorite among the 2025 Ee BAFTA Film Awards voters, scoring 12 nominations including Best Film, Director, Leading Actor, and Supporting Actress. Emilia Pérez was close behind with 11 nominations, followed by The Brutalist with nine and Anora, Dune: Part Two, and Wicked with seven.

Overall, 42 films earned BAFTA Film Awards nominations, and 14 of the 24 performance nominees are BAFTA Awards first-timers.

Winners will be announced on February 16th.

Anora, A Complete Unknown, Challengers, Hit Man, and Wicked are among the 2025 Writers Guild of America Awards nominees.

In Best Original Screenplay, Anora and Challengers are up against A Real Pain, Civil War, and My Old Ass. The Best Adapted Screenplay lineup features A Complete Unknown, Dune: Part Two, Hit Man, Nickel Boys, and Wicked.

The nominations were announced Wednesday, a week after the guild postponed its scheduled Jan. 9 announcement due to the Los Angeles wildfires.

As previously reported, dozens of scripts — including several top Oscar hopefuls — were ineligible for consideration this year. A screenplay is ineligible if it’s produced outside of the WGA’s collective bargaining agreement or written by a non-union member.

The Writers Guild of America (WGA) has unveiled its nominees for the 2025 WGA Awards, highlighting a mix of familiar Oscar frontrunners, unexpected entries, and the creative reshuffling prompted by ineligible contenders.

Sean Baker’s critically acclaimed “Anora” is leading the original screenplay list, which many consider the Oscar frontrunner in this category. Another strong contender is Jesse Eisenberg’s “A Real Pain,” a personal, semi-autobiographical drama that has been a critical favorite this season.

Bafta has announced the nominations for the Ee British Academy Film Awards in 2025, celebrating the very best in film of the past year. Bafta winner Will Sharpe and former Ee Rising Star winner Mia McKenna-Bruce hosted the announcement via global livestream from the arts charity’s headquarters at 195 Piccadilly, London. The Ee Bafta Film Awards, hosted by David Tennant, will be broadcast on BBC One and iPlayer from London’s Royal Festival Hall on Sunday 16 February. In addition, the Ee Bafta Film Awards will be available across BritBox in North America, the Nordics and Australia, as well as a host of further international broadcasters to be announced. Viewers at home will also have front row seats to the red-carpet arrivals, which will be streamed live on Bafta’s YouTube, featuring interviews with nominees and other special guests. Voting for the Ee Rising Star Award is now open at ee.co.

Roll up, awards buffs: shiny trophy season is hotting up, with BAFTA having announced its nominees for this year’s ceremony. And fittingly, it seems BAFTA members might have gathered in robes to submit their votes on little white slips of paper: papal thriller Conclave is the most-nominated film this year, receiving 12 nods including Best Film, Director for Edward Berger, Leading Actor for Ralph Fiennes, Supporting Actress for Isabella Rossellini, Adapted Screenplay and more. Hot on Conclave’s heels is Emilia Pérez, Jacques Audiard’s genre-defying crime-thriller-musical-character-drama, in which a cartel boss undergoes gender-reassignment surgery to begin her new life. Wicked, Kneecap, Gladiator II star Denzel Washington, Sing Sing breakout Clarence Maclin, Queer lead Daniel Craig, and The Substance star Margaret Qualley were among the biggest snubs and surprises after the 78th annual BAFTA Awards nominations were announced on Wednesday.

Conclave and Emilia Pérez led all films with 12 and 11 nominations, respectively. Most of the expected Oscar contenders also landed predicted bids with British Academy of Film and Television Arts voters (the complete list of nominees is here). However, the BAFTA Awards snubs and surprises were slightly scooped by the BAFTA Awards themselves. The 2025 BAFTA Film Awards nominations are in, and Netflix’s Emilia Pérez is among the films leading the way with 11 nods, just behind Black Bear’s Vatican drama Conclave, directed by Edward Berger, with 12. In the animated and kids area, Netflix’s Wallace and Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl was also one of the top nominations earners with three.

But it was a different name that topped a list of most-nominated studios/distributors, provided by BAFTA on Wednesday: Universal Pictures and Focus Features, which scored noms for the likes of Brady Corbet’s The Brutalist, Jn M. Chu’s Wicked, Sean Baker’s Anora, and Robert Eggers’s Nosferatu.

All nominations are led by Edward Berger’s Conclave which scored 12 total. Fresh from making Golden Globes history, Karla Sofía Gascón has now become the first openly transgender actress to be nominated for a BAFTA Film Award.

The Spanish performer has been recognized in the Leading Actress category for her role in Emilia Pérez, in which she stars as a Mexican drug kingpin who transitions into a woman.

Gascón will compete for the BAFTA prize alongside five other nominees: Saoirse Ronan (The Outrun), Demi Moore (The Substance), Mikey Madison (Anora), Marianne Jean-Baptiste (Hard Truths), Cynthia Erivo (Wicked).

Kneecap is leading the charge at this year’s Irish Film and Television Academy (IFTA) awards, with 17 nominations across 12 categories.

Rich Peppiatt’s feature about the eponymous Irish-language Belfast hip hop act is on an awards season roll, having led the winners at the Bifas back in December with seven awards, as well as having been shortlisted at the Oscars in the international feature category, and being longlisted in seven categories at the Baftas (with nominations announced tomorrow).

“Kneecap” — the Irish-language music biopic that became one of the buzziest indie films of 2024 and is now tipped for both Oscar and BAFTA recognition — has, perhaps unsurprisingly, emerged far ahead of the pack of nominees for the 2025 Irish Film & TV Academy (IFTA) awards.

Rich Peppiatt’s raucous comedy, about (and starring) the Belfast rap trio of the same name, has landed an astonishing 17 nominations for the awards, including best film, director, three of the six slots for lead actor, three of the six for supporting actress and one for Michael Fassbender in the supporting actor category.

“Small Things Like These,” the considerably quieter Irish drama fronted (and produced) by Cillian Murphy has nine nominations, including lead actor for Murphy, who won the award last year for “Oppenheimer.”

Having been co-produced by Irish company Tailored Films, Ali Abbasi’s Donald Trump biopic “The Apprentice” is also in the mix, with four nominations.

Small Things Like These has nods in Best Screenplay, Lead Actor for Murphy, and Best Film. Other Best Film nominees include Donald Trump biopic The Apprentice, King Frankie, and Kneecap.

Kneecap has a strong showing across the noms, with nods in Best Director for Rich Peppiatt and all three of the film’s leads pop up in Best Actor. Paul Mescal also received a Best Actor nomination for his role in Ridley Scott’s Gladiator II.

On the TV side, Sharon Horgan’s Bad Sisters is nominated for Best Drama while the Eddie Redmayne thriller The Day of the Jackal has multiple noms, including Best Director for a Drama Series.

The official Oscar nominees for the Best Actress award will be announced on January 17, 2025. Netflix has produced a few Oscar nominees in the past few years and the Best Actress category of this year will be no exception.

One week after her Golden Globes triumph for I’m Still Here, Fernanda Torres is now expected to receive an Oscar nomination for Best Actress, according to Gold Derby‘s 2025 Oscars predictions. The Brazilian actress, whose mother, Fernanda Montenegro, earned a Best Actress Oscar bid of her own for Central Station (1998), has climbed into our top five for the first time this awards season. I’m Still Here is a political thriller directed by Walter Salles that serves as Brazil’s entry in the Best International Feature contest.

The Oscars 2025 race for Best Actress is positioned to be highly competitive as former winners, nominees, and first-time hopefuls compete for the five available nominations. Following the tight race in 2024 that ended with a surprise as Emma Stone beat presumed winner, Lily Gladstone, the next crop of contenders for Best Actress in 2025 is just as tight. The category for rewarding the best lead performance by an actress is likely to have some crossover with the 2025 Oscars Best Picture nominees, even if male-centric films dominate the potential field.

That could put the Best Actress nominees in a starkly different position than the 2025 Oscars Best Actor nominations. Several actresses in contention currently have leading roles in movies predicted to be outside the Best Picture lineup, even if they are ultimately recognized elsewhere among all Oscars 2025 nominations. Sunday’s Golden Globes sent shockwaves through Hollywood, as presumed Oscar favorites like Anora and The Wild Robot were shut out, while underdog performers like Demi Moore (The Substance), Fernanda Torres (I’m Still Here), and Sebastian Stan (A Different Man) all claimed statuettes.

Now that the dust has settled, The Brutalist, Brady Corbet‘s period drama about the American dream, has jumped into the No. 1 spot in Gold Derby’s 2025 Oscars predictions for Best Picture, replacing Anora, Sean Baker‘s manic comedy about a Brooklyn sex worker.

Newcomers expected to receive a nomination since the last update: A Complete Unknown in Best Picture, Margaret Qualley (The Substance) in Best Supporting Actress, Conclave in Best Cinematography, and Nosferatu in Best Makeup & Hairstyling.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences announced on Monday the 207 feature films eligible for Best Picture consideration, two days before voting for the 2025 Oscar nominations begins.

There are 323 feature films eligible for the Academy Awards, but just 207 met the Best Picture competition eligibility requirements.

As stated by the Academy in a press release, “To be eligible for consideration in the general entry categories, under rules implemented for the 97th Academy Awards year, feature films must open in a commercial motion picture theater in at least one of six U.S. metropolitan areas: Los Angeles County; the City of New York; the Bay Area; Chicago, Illinois; Dallas-Fort Worth, Texas; and Atlanta, Georgia, between Jan. 1, 2024, and Dec. 31, 2024, and complete a minimum qualifying run of seven consecutive days in the same venue. Feature films must have a running time of more than 40 minutes.”

But Best Picture eligibility is different. Films under consideration...

The 82nd Golden Globes will honor Hollywood’s best and brightest tonight. But as usual, film and television fans are upset about some genuinely shocking snubs.

This year’s list of honorees serves to remind us of what an impressive year it’s been in the worlds of movies and TV.

But the downside of so much great content is that many worthy performances — which might have been nominated in any other recent year — have been overlooked by the Globes organization.

The British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) has unveiled the “longlists” for 2025 — and “Emilia Pérez” leads the competition, landing 15 spots. The longlists narrow the field in 25 different categories for the 2025 Ee British Academy Film Awards, which will take place on Feb. 16.

“Emilia Pérez” scored slots on lists including best film, director (for Jacques Audiard), leading actress (Karla Sofía Gascón) and supporting actress. Just behind it is “Conclave,” which popped up on 14 lists that include best film, director (Edward Berger) and leading actor (Ralph Fiennes).

Next in line, appearing on 11 lists, are “The Substance,” “The Brutalist” and “A Complete Unknown,” followed by “Wicked” and “Dune: Part Two” on 10 lists and “Anora” and “Gladiator 2” on nine. All but “Gladiator 2” are on the longlist for best film. But bright side: Denzel Washington is on the supporting actor list. (The two-time Oscar winner has never been nominated for a BAFTA.

Netflix’s top contender Emilia Pérez landed on 15 longlists — tying a record set by Netflix’s All Quiet on the Western Front two years ago and Oppenheimer, Killers of the Flower Moon, and Barbie last year. Among its mentions were Best Film, Best Film Not in English Language, Best Director and Best Adapted Screenplay for Jacques Audiard, and four longlist nods for its quartet of actresses — with Karla Sofia Gascon hitting the lead actress longlist and co-stars Zoe Saldaña, Selena Gomez, and Adriana Paz all appearing on the supporting actress longlist. The four actresses shared the Best Actress honors at last year’s Cannes Film Festival, where Emilia Pérez made its debut.

The British Academy has unveiled the results of the first round of voting across all 25 categories for the 2024 BAFTA Film Awards, with two very different thrillers leading the pack of longlisted features.

Jacques Audiard’s “Emilia Pérez,” a Spanish-language music-thriller that was picked up by Netflix in Cannes, has emerged ahead of the race with slots in 15 categories, including best film, director, leading actress and three in the supporting actress list. Meanwhile “Conclave,” Focus Features’ Papal mystery-thriller from Edward Berger set within the Vatican, has 14, including best film, director and leading actor for Ralph Fiennes.

Further down, a tight pack of films includes “The Substance,” “The Brutalist” and “A Complete Unknown” on 11 lists, “Wicked” and “Dune: Part Two” on 10 and “Anora” and “Gladiator 2” on nine. Sean Baker’s Anora is honored with nine mentions on the longlists, including for lead star Mikey Madison. Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande are included for their roles in Jon M. Chu’s Wicked, and Timothée Chalamet is among the leading actor list for his performance in A Complete Unknown.

Bafta has unveiled the round two voting longlists for its 2024 film awards, with Emilia Perez leading the way with 15 spots followed by Conclave with 14.

Eighty films have been longlisted across 25 categories, including the new children’s and family film award – the first new category at the Bafta film awards for five years.

There’s been a major shakeup in Gold Derby’s Oscar odds for Best Actress: The Substance star Demi Moore has jumped into our top five for the first time.

Coralie Fargeat‘s body-horror flick was a late-comer to the Oscars contest, only picking up serious steam in the past couple of months. Aside from Moore’s Best Actress bid, The Substance recently climbed into Gold Derby’s top 10 for Best Picture and top five for Best Director and Best Original Screenplay; the film is also predicted to win the race for Best Makeup & Hairstyling.

Moore is a one-time Emmy nominee for If These Walls Could Talk (1997), but she has yet to be recognized at the Academy Awards. The actress did pick up her third career Golden Globe nod for The Substance, as well as nominations from the Critics Choice Awards, Satellite Awards, and Independent Spirit Awards. Might her role...

The Sean Baker-helmed film, which stars Mikey Madison as a sex worker whose quickie marriage to the slacker son of a Russian oligarch goes horribly awry, has spent 17 weeks at No. 1 in Gold Derby’s Best Picture rankings with 7/1 odds, while The Brutalist and Conclave are tied at 15/2 odds in the runner-up position. Additionally, Baker is second in the Best Director odds (4/1), behind The Brutalist helmer Brady Corbet (18/5), while Madison (17/5) continues in the top slot for Best Actress.

Perhaps in a year where wars are raging, the planet is burning, and the cruelest people are elected to the highest offices, we don’t deserve the best movies. You can find plenty of films that bring joy over the past twelve months, for sure. But if we’re talking about the overall level of awesome-ness of the cinematic offerings, about works that feel undeniable, it seems to me that 2024 did not deliver the way, say, 2023 did.

Then again, maybe that’s just me being grumpy and anxious from all the ways the world offscreen is going wrong, because who can deny the electrifying energy and humanist glow of Sean Baker’s Anora? Or the funny, phantasmagoric family portrait that is Tyler Taormina’s Christmas Eve in Miller’s Point?...

Who would hear their names called if the 2025 Oscars nominations were announced today? Since our predictions center opened on July 1, 2024, more than 7,200 people have now made their forecasts. Now expected to receive a nomination since the last update: Nosferatu in Best Cinematography, according to the most recent Gold Derby Oscar predictions. Also of note, Conclave‘s Isabella Rossellini has jumped up to third place in Best Supporting Actress for playing Sister Agnes in the religious thriller. This would be her first career Oscar bid.

A year where the most celebrated films are as diverse as “Wicked,” “The Brutalist” and “Smile 2” is a year movie-lovers are going to remember for a long time. The industry’s and the audience’s acceptance of wildly disparate films allowed for a host of memorable, unique performances in 2024 that challenged the norms of motion picture performance and gave many actors their most iconic roles to date.

It’s hard to narrow down all the greats; by the time this retrospective was already getting out of hand, it became clear that some wonderful turns were somehow, despite their brilliance, not going to make the cut. But these are the performances that stood out amongst the standouts, in some of the best — and arguably one or two of the worst — movies of the 2024.
