Fashion, East-West Asian identities, corporate espionage and romance are on the agenda in “Morning, Paris!,” a new mini-series project being pitched at Series Mania by veteran filmmaker Quentin Lee.
“’Morning, Paris!’ is a heartfelt comedy about a young modern Bipoc Canadian woman discovering herself in the most romantic city in the world,” says Lee. “Or put another way, it is a limited television series about an aspiring female fashion designer from Vancouver who ends up in Paris Fashion week with a very unlikely companion because she wants to spy on her boss on whom she has a crush. It’s ‘The Devil Wears Prada’ meets Robert Atman’s ‘Prêt-à-Porter’ with the sensibility of Woody Allen’s ‘Midnight in Paris’.”

In the modern world, who really exerts control? In a relationship? In a family? A single mother must confront those issues as her teenage son becomes aware of and then troubled by her very private, very adult relationships. Directed and written by Simon Steuri, the short film Control stars Remy O'Brien and Matthew Parry-Jones. Veteran independent filmmaker -- and longtime friend of the site -- Quentin Lee produced the film with Steuri; they previously worked together on Lee's documentary series Gay Hollywood Dad. Steuri has made several short films and has also worked in the world of commercials. His advertising work is quite eye-catching, lovely and evocative, words I rarely use about such things. I've watched all the...

The latest short film by Quentin Lee, On Halloween, pays homage to spooky classics of the past with a few clever twists of its own. Lee has made a variety of features, ranging from the emotional drama Ethan Mao to the teen trauma of White Frog to the fizzy romance of The People I've Slept With. He's explored horror before in his graphic novel Campus Ghost Story and this year's The Unbidden, and On Halloween delves again into terror territory. Candy Cheung stars as a babysitter and Jerry Hernandez (Ethan Mao) is her boyfriend who visits her when she's 'on the job' caring for an infant, played by Quentin Lee's son Junyi Casper Lee. Something happens, and to say it's a bit unnerving is only...

Quentin Lee began his filmmaking career more than 20 years ago and it's still impossible to pigeonhole him. He's tackled a winning variety of human-sized stories in a variety of settings and an intriguing mix of genres, from the emotional angst of Ethan Mao to the intimate drama of White Frog to the romantic comedy of The People I've Slept With to the spooky fun of The Unbidden. Beyond his feature-length efforts, he's also made a slew of short movies and his upcoming next short sounds quite intriguing. Here is how Mr. Lee describes it: I wrote the short script On Halloween about a scary and unexpected night of a babysitter to star my friend Candy Cheung (a talented actress whom I want to work...

With Halloween approaching, it's a good season to think about psychological thrillers and dark secrets, which means it's the perfect time to consider backing The Unbidden, an Asian-American horror psycho thriller from director Quentin Lee. Lee has forged a path that is distinctly his own in the independent film world, most notably his angry debut, Ethan Mao, in contrast to his tart rom-com The People I've Slept With and the mournful, compassionate family drama White Frog. But somewhere in there he also wrote a terrific graphic novel, Campus Ghost Story -- read more about it here -- featuring a twisting and pleasantly mind-bending trio of haunted tales. Now he's applying his directorial touch to Narhee Ahn's original script, which sounds like it has some new twists of...

Quentin Lee is one of my favorite independent filmmakers, in part because he refuses to be tied down to any particular genre. He's made a potent family drama (Ethan Mao), a slick-but-sincere romantic comedy (The People I've Slept With), and a coming-of-age film (White Frog), as well as short films and documentaries. Now he's announced his next project, The English Major, described as a Canadian chiller. In brief, The English Major is "a more literary version of Scream set on a college campus ... a thriller about a sophomore becoming the prime suspect of campus serial murders reminiscent to those committed by a dead serial killer 13 years ago." Devery Jacobs (Rhymes for Young Ghouls) (pictured above) and newcomer Aidan Parker (right) have been cast in key roles....

For the last ten years, Harry Shum Jr. has shown his gifts for acting, singing, and most extraordinarily, dance, starring in such films as You Got Served, Stomp The Yard, and Step Up 2 & 3, and moving on to his most famous role, as “Other Asian” Mike Chang on Glee.
Unfortunately, he was always underutilized during his time with the show, but still managed to stand out. He still makes occasional appearances, but has moved on to more film roles (he played Booboo Stewart‘s gay brother in White Frog), and shows us reminders of his incredible dancing ability.
Today is his 32nd birthday, so let’s pay tribute to one of our favorite triple threats.

Everyone grieves in their own way and in their own time. White Frog establishes a happy family before promptly destroying it. Promising and popular high school senior Chaz Young (Harry Shum Jr.) dies unexpectedly. His mother (Joan Chen) goes to pieces, ridding the home of all reminders of him. His father (Bd Wong) withdraws, seeking solace in his religious faith. His younger brother Nick (Booboo Stewart), 15, is hit the hardest. He doesn't act like other people -- the explanation is not revealed immediately -- and he has no friends, other than his kind and supportive brother, whose loss he cannot fully comprehend. From that bleak beginning, director Quentin Lee fashions a story of hope and faith, love and tenderness, empathy and tolerance. Screenwriters Ellie...

Michael J. Werner’s Fortissimo Films was surprisingly almost shut out from showing in any of the sections at Cannes (they’re repping the Un Certain Regard title Miss Lovely), which only means they’ll got plenty in the coffers for the near future. Loaded in Asian fare, among the titles that stick out from the pack is recent Tribeca winner Una Noche from Lucy Mulloy, and for the near future Scott McGehee and David Siegel’s next film, What Masie Knew (see pic above), John Cameron Mitchell’s How to Talk to Girls at Parties and let us not forget the best picture of the year so far in, Antonio Campos’ Simon Killer.

Imagine my excitement when I was given the opportunity to interview Booboo Stewart, who plays hunky wolf-boy Seth Clearwater in the last two Twilight movies (and in the final chapter: The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Pt 2, which opens next November). I hadn.t actually seen any of the Twilight films but I.ve been told that Seth is arguably one of the most lovable characters in the whole series and I jumped at the chance to interview a bona fide teen idol. A little research revealed that 18-year old Booboo Stewart (real name Nils Allen Stewart Jr.) is quite a multi-talented young man. He.s not only an actor, but a comic book writer, a model, a dancer, a stuntman, and a musician. Stewart is in a band named Echoes of Angels and tours with his two sisters Maegan and Fivel, who are known...

BooBoo Stewart is starring in a very moving new film, titled White Frog. In the film, BooBoo plays a teen with Asperger’s, who has to cope when his family is suddenly struck by tragedy. Pretending to be the perfect family no longer seems quite as easy. Check out the trailer and more below:
High-school freshman, Nick (The Twilight Saga’s Booboo Stewart), is a neglected teen with mild Asperger’s syndrome whose life is challenged and ultimately changed forever when tragedy hits his family. White Frog is a universal story of the power of family, friendship, and love positioned to appeal to a broad audience in the same way as Ordinary People and Stand By Me.
Find out more at the official website for White Frog here.
Oh, this one is going to be a huge tear-jerker!

The first trailer for Booboo Stewart ("Seth Clearwater" in the Twilight Saga)'s White Frog has been unveiled. In the film, he portrays "Nick Young," the younger brother of a boy who passes away and leaves his once-perfect family in a difficult state. You can see the trailer in the sidebar attachment. Booboo Stewart's been working on a lot of projects lately, all very different from his small part in the Twilight series, and he's been fortunate enough to get leading roles in each. Other films to look for him in are Guardians Of Luna (which also stars Kellan Lutz) and Jake Stevens: The Last Protector. ...

TNT found a way to interest me in their new Western, called Gateway. They cast Cam Gigandet in the lead as one of three brothers trying to save their town after the murder of their father, the sheriff. Ever since his sexy arms (and cute butt) showed up in Burlesque, I've been hooked.

Apparently when you form a family from spare cast members of Glee, the Twilight franchise, and Law and Order: Svu, you might end up with an attractive ensemble. We watch such results occur in this on-set picture from White Frog, next year's movie about "a 15-year-old with Asperger's (The Twilight Saga's Boo Boo Stewart) dealing with a tragedy in the family." Harry Shum of Glee and B.D. Wong of Law and Order: Svu (and the fabulous, Tony-award winning play M. Butterfly) flank him. Don't forget Joan Chen as the also-very-great-looking mom!

[1] So, Jeremy Renner has finally given up one of the roughly five million roles he's been linked to since he became Hollywood's hottest rising star. The Playlist [2] reports that Sam Rockwell is currently in negotiations to replace Renner as the lead in Better Living Through Chemistry, an indie drama by Geoff Moore and David Posamentier. Rockwell would be playing an unhappily married pharmacist who enters an affair with a trophy wife customer (Jennifer Garner). As their prescription drug-fueled romance escalates, things spin out of control and the two begin plotting to kill her husband. Much as I like Renner, I'm equally happy to see the talented Rockwell in the part. Moore and Posamentier are building up quite the cast -- in addition to Rockwell and Garner, the film is also set to star Dame Judi Dench and Michelle Monaghan. After the jump, Justin Timberlake picks up a new gig, and...
