Theon tells Maester Luwin that he does not wish to be treated as a "fool and a eunuch," foreshadowing his fate at the hands of Ramsay Bolton.
This episode marks the first time that the saying "Every time a Targaryen is born, the gods flip a coin" is used on screen. It is a paraphrase of what Barristan Selmy says to Daenerys in the novel 'A Storm of Swords': "King Jaehaerys once told me that madness and greatness are two sides of the same coin. Every time a new Targaryen is born, he said, the gods toss the coin in the air and the world holds its breath to see how it will land."
In the second book "A Clash of Kings," Catelyn and Jaime only speak once, after his failed escape attempt, but this conversation was split in two for the show, with the first part occurring in Fire and Blood (2011). Still, most of their lengthy conversation as portrayed in the novel was omitted from the show: they agree to speak the full truth, and Jaime's confession is greatly helped by his consumption of wine. He admits that he is the father of Cersei's children (on the show, he only admits to their incestuous relation) and that he pushed Bran out of the window, but denies sending the assassin to kill Bran. He confirms that Tyrion didn't send the assassin with the dagger either; Tyrion never won that dagger from Littlefinger during a wager by betting against Jaime, because Tyrion would never bet against family; this proves to Catelyn that Tyrion was innocent, and that Littlefinger had lied to her about the dagger. Lastly, Jaime relates how Ned's father and brother were killed by the Mad King, and how he always resented Ned for not showing more gratitude to Jaime for killing the king. Although Jaime teases Catelyn several times, he merely mentions Ned's bastard son, and never insults Brienne.
According to director David Nutter, Jaime being dragged and beaten by the Stark army was inspired by the brutal public beating and execution of Libyan dictator Muammar Gaddafi, which had happened just before the episode was filmed.
First mentioning of Ygritte's catchphrase "You know nothing, Jon Snow."
