2024 was, all told, a mixed year at the box office. Things started out on a dreadful note as the first half of the year was filled with flops, disappointments, and movies that simply couldn't carry the load after 2023's SAG and WGA strikes completely upended the release calendar. Fortunately, things turned around in the second half of the year thanks to hit movies like "Wicked," "Deadpool & Wolverine," and "Inside Out 2" turning the tide. Despite all of that, the global box office finished well below that for 2023, slowing the industry's recovery in the aftermath of the 2020 lockdowns. At the same time, streaming's place as the future was more firmly cemented.
According to Gower Street Analytics (via Deadline), the global box office total for 2024 was $30 billion, compared to $33.9 billion in 2023. That number includes $8.75 billion from domestic ticket sales, which was down from 2023 when that number topped $9 billion. In light of...

Nicolas Cage and Pedro Pascal's The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent is quickly climbing Netflix's charts following its premiere on the platform. Tom Gormican's 2022 action-comedy sees a fictionalized and down-on-his-luck Cage embark on a paid appearance at billionaire super-fan Javi Gutierrez's (Pascal) birthday party, only to find himself swept up in a CIA plot. The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent also stars Sharon Horgan, Tiffany Haddish, Ike Barinholtz, Neil Patrick Harris, and Paco León.
After netting a score of 87% on Rotten Tomatoes upon release, The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent had an incredible debut among audiences upon its Netflix premiere. Within the first week of being added to the streaming service's catalog, Cage and Pascal's action-comedy has risen up the daily charts. As of Sunday, January 19, the movie is the #6 title on the list of Top 10 Movies in the U.S. today. It comes behind new release Back in Action,...

A24 has become one of the leading producers in horror over the past decade. Most recently, their horror film Heretic succeeded at the box office and among critics, scoring an impressive 91% Tomatometer. The central Heretic performance by Hugh Grant has also garnered attention at awards ceremonies, earning the actor nominations at the Golden Globe and BAFTA awards. 2024 also saw the release of other A24 horror films including Y2K, The Front Room, MaXXXine, and I Saw The TV Glow.
But even before last year, A24 has been cultivating directorial talents in the horror genre for years. They were the distributor behind The Witch, for example, a film that would go on to make stars out of both director Robert Eggers and actor Anya Taylor-Joy. The company added other indie auteurs to its growing list of directorial collaborators, including Clerks helmer Kevin Smith, who directed their wacky 2014 horror film Tusk. Another director...

The year is almost done, Netflix fans. Every month there are some changes to what the giant streams, but something about beginning a new year feels different. Even if you have seen some of the following shows before, you have never seen them in 2025. Not yet anyway.
Netflix goes extra-heavy with new releases at the start of January. There will be new releases throughout the month, but nothing like January 1. You might want to work your monthly calendar around that day alone.
But what is coming out and when? That list is below.

An Adam Sandler horror-comedy franchise is dominating a global streaming chart. Sandler is a five-time Emmy nominee who first rose to prominence as a member of the cast of the long-running NBC sketch comedy series Saturday Night Live. He has since become a major comedy star, with his movies Billy Madison (about a wealthy adult man who is forced to return to school) and Happy Gilmore (about a golfer with anger issues) helping his star rise further and providing the name for his production company Happy Madison, which was founded in 1999.
While there are quite a few Adam Sandler movies that have earned Rotten Tomatoes splats, he has become a major commercial success. At the time of writing, his movies have collectively earned more than $5.5 billion, with many original comedies grossing $100 million or more, including 50 First Dates, The Wedding Singer, The Water Boy, Big Daddy, Click, and Pixels. Hulu offers a wide array of films and series refreshed monthly, with over 100 new movies and TV shows coming to the platform in November. Launched in 2007, Hulu has been at the forefront of the streaming service boom since the very beginning, and it's one of the most popular services thanks to its rich catalog of new and classic movies and shows. From hosting series from networks like FX and ABC to producing original films and shows, Hulu has become an indispensable source of entertainment.
October 2024 was a busy month for the platform with the return of some popular series, including What We Do in the Shadows and Abbott Elementary. There were also plenty of horror titles for the Halloween season. Looking ahead to November 2024, Hulu is once again getting into the festive season with the addition of a variety of Christmas content, including TV movies, reality specials, and holiday movie favorites.

October was huge for Disney+ and Hulu — but which month isn’t? After the weekly installments of “Agatha All Along” and the staple that is Huluween, the bundled streamers gear up for winter programming this November.
Disney+ continues to be the home for live episodes of “Dancing With the Stars” and the original series “Ayla & The Mirrors,” which continues to air new episodes. Along with new children’s programming and holiday specials like “An Almost Christmas Story,” the streamer will premiere “The Music of John Williams” on November 1, celebrating the acclaimed film composer and his decades-long career with new footage and interviews from those he worked with and inspired.
It’s another big month for movies coming to Hulu, as well as beloved shows like “Ally McBeal” (complete series). Stay tuned for an adaptation of Charles Yu’s “Interior Chinatown” and the docuseries “It’s All Country,” as well as...

NBCUniversal’s streaming service Peacock had a big July and a massive August thanks almost exclusively to the 2024 Paris Summer Olympics. Netflix had an equally massive January-to-June, in part because of all NBCUniversal’s animated movies available on the streamer.
In case you’ve been living under a mountain of other Microsoft Excel spreadsheets, on Thursday, September 19, Netflix shared more than 16,000 lines of its viewership data from the first half of 2024. It lists every show or movie watched on Netflix around the globe, how many views each had, and for how many hours they were watched. Light reading material for us.
Twice a year, there are endless takeaways from Netflix’s data dump. One of the big ones from this set was just how dominant NBCUniversal’s animated films are — only not on NBCUniversal’s own streaming platform, Peacock.

Paramount Animation and Hasbro Entertainment’s Transformers One, the first animated Transformers movie in close to 40 years, looks to liven up the mid-September box office with a domestic start in the low-$30Ms with potential for upside.
Transformers One will keep the domestic box office at its excellent clip. Through the last weekend of April, the domestic B.O. stood at $2.07 billion, 20% behind 2023. Since then, through last weekend, the domestic box office has made an additional $4 billion for a running Ytd cume of $6.08 billion, now 12% behind last year.
Advance ticket sales are solid from Thursday through Saturday, ahead of last year’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem ($28M 3-day) and Trolls Band Together ($30M).
Josh Cooley directed what has been described for months as one of Paramount’s highest-testing animated movies. The $75M production tells the origin story of Optimus Prime and Megatron, who were buddies before becoming sworn enemies.

Bowen previously played Virginia Venit, the love interest of Happy Gilmore and a pro golf tour public relations director in the 1996 comedy film. Spooky season is nearly here.
And Peacock, Universal’s direct-to-consumer streaming platform, has just unveiled its Halloween programming line-up, full of tricks and treats from the studio’s back catalog, as well as two new series (“Teacup” and “Hysteria!”) for some fresh scares.
In 2022 and ’23, there was at least one big Blumhouse movie that simultaneously debuted on Peacock — in ’22, it was David Gordon Green’s trilogy-capping “Halloween Ends” and last year, it was the video game adaptation “Five Nights at Freddy’s”. This year doesn’t have anything quite like that, but it’s still a powerful collection of titles for every viewer.
The Sept. 1 batch includes classics like “Bride of Frankenstein,” “It Came From Outer Space” and “Werewolf of London;” 1980s favorites like “Halloween III: Season of the Witch,” “The Funhouse” and “The Thing;” along with more modern hits like the original “Candyman,” Jordan Peele’s “Us” and several entries in the “Saw” franchise.

Even if you don't know the name Genndy Tartakovsky, chances are high that if you watched cartoons in the '90s or '00s, you've seen his work. "Dexter's Laboratory" kickstarted the reign of Cartoon Network by becoming the first so-called "Cartoon Cartoon," while "Samurai Jack" is one of the most influential cartoons from the '00s thanks to Tartakovsky's eye for dynamic action and understanding of the importance of silence in storytelling. Even his "Star Wars: Clone Wars" micro-series continues to influence "Star Wars" to this day. And outside of animation, Tartakovsky helped save the action scenes in "Iron Man 2."
In 2012, Tartakovsky made his feature film debut with "Hotel Transylvania," a movie that brought together classic Universal Monsters and reimagined them into a fun animated movie for all ages seen from the eyes of a human who falls in love with Dracula's daughter. It was a monster movie...

Twenty-five years ago, Adam Sandler’s Big Daddy wiped the floor with the competition.
Sony released the comedy feature from director Dennis Dugan (Happy Gilmore) on June 25, 1999. The film opened to $41 million domestically en route to collecting $234 million globally ($442 million today) and holding the title as Sandler’s highest-grossing title domestically until Hotel Transylvania 2 in 2015.
Big Daddy centers on Sonny Koufax (Sandler), an unmotivated law school graduate who attempts to prove himself by adopting 5-year-old Julian (Cole and Dylan Sprouse) when the boy shows up at his doorstep. The cast includes Jon Stewart, Joey Lauren Adams, Rob Schneider and Leslie Mann.
During separate conversations with The Hollywood Reporter, producer Sid Ganis and writer Steve Franks (credited for the screenplay alongside Sandler and Tim Herlihy) discuss how Disneyland helped inspire the project and recall Chris Farley lobbying for the lead role. Adam Sandler's sequels have consistently received better Rotten Tomatoes scores than the originals since 2013. Happy Gilmore 2 needs to surpass the 62% Rotten Tomatoes score of the original film to continue Sandler's impressive record. The highly-anticipated sequel's success is under pressure to live up to Happy Gilmore's legacy and high Rotten Tomatoes scores.
After almost 30 years since the first movie premiered, Happy Gilmore 2 is happening, and while expectations are high, the upcoming film is also under pressure to continue Adam Sandler's Rotten Tomatoes streak. Netflix confirmed that Happy Gilmore 2 is officially in development, but the only known details are that Sandler will reprise his role as the eponymous character and is involved in writing the script. The actor's production company, Happy Madison Productions, is attached to the sequel, as Sandler and Netflix signed a major film deal years ago, and the actor has released numerous movies through the streaming service since.

Transformers One, is going now on Sept. 20 instead of Sept. 13.
The move gets Transformers One further away from Beetlejuice Beetlejuice which is going to eat up the September box office. However, already on this weekend is DreamWorks Animation/Universal’s Wild Robot. Two big animated movies are certainly not going to live on the same weekend.
The release date change also comes in the wake of the great reception that Transformers One received out of CinemaCon last week. Late September has been a rich bed for family animated movies including Hotel Transylvania 2 ($48.2M opening), Hotel Transylvania ($42.5M opening) and Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs ($34M opening).
Transformers One is among one of Paramount’s highest tested movies in the studio’s history.

The action-thriller The Bricklayer, starring Aaron Eckhart, defies its Rotten Tomatoes scores and finds success on Netflix. “Kung Fu Panda 4” (Universal) debuted on PVOD to #1 April 9, which it has enjoyed for a week; that will end with “Dune: Part 2” (Warner Bros.), which debuts today after 46 days in release.
Both films still are in the box office Top 10. “Panda” actually rose one position to #4 this weekend, with its 29 percent drop the lowest of any holdover on the list. It still has a shot at a $200 million domestic gross. “Dune 2,” which was #5 this weekend and will get close to $300 million, will likely minimize the impact of parallel home availability given its essential visual presentation.
Based on presales, “Dune 2” is already #6 on iTunes top 10 list (ranked by transactions). Other platforms stick to currently available titles, but it would be surprising if it’s not immediately #1 on both iTunes and Fandango.

Genndy Tartakovsky's 2001 animated series "Samurai Jack" is probably one of the best of its era. The series boasted a peculiar and stoic tone, with the title hero (Phil Lamarr) staying quiet for vast blocks of the show. Samurai Jack was lost in the distant future, thanks to the sorcery of a tricky trickster god named Aku, and a lot of the series was devoted to Jack's exploration of strange, new alien settings. "Samurai Jack." also featured a unique, neo-cubist aesthetic; characters didn't have black-line outlines, and backgrounds were often abstract and blocky. Fans will also hasten to add the overwhelmingly awesome action of "Samurai Jack." If one is animating with blocky shapes and abstract backgrounds, the action can be just as stylized. The fight scenes on "Samurai Jack" are the stuff of legend.
"Samurai Jack" ran until 2004, and there had long been plans to adapt the series into a live-action feature film.

When Adam Sandler made his television debut as Stud Boy and the Trivia Delinquent on MTV's influential game show "Remote Control," he did not exude an all-ages appeal. He was an unassuming goofball: funny, yes, but in a dorky way that augured a career as, at best, a supporting comedic performer. If he played his cards right, he could have Gilbert Gottfried's movie and television career.
Like Gottfried, Sandler became a Not Ready for Prime Time Player on "Saturday Night Live." Unlike Gottfried, he didn't get canned after his first season. By the early 1990s, he was one of the show's breakout stars. He built on his success via a pair of platinum comedy albums ("They're All Gonna Laugh at You" and "What the Hell Happened to Me?"), and proved he could carry a movie with 1995's "Billy Madison." The critics loathed him, but teens and twentysomethings dug his unrepentantly juvenile humor.

A car crash interview with a delusional prince, a new series adaptation featuring Patricia Highsmith’s most infamous creation, the second part of Zack Snyder’s pricey space opera and a paranormal detective show set within Neil Gaiman’s celebrated Sandman universe are among the big titles hitting Netflix in April.
Debuting April 4 is Ripley, Netflix’s glossy new take on Highsmith’s 1955 crime novel The Talented Mr. Ripley. Fresh from the critical acclaim he received for All of Us Strangers, Irish actor Andrew Scott will be inhabiting the role of Tom Ripley in an adaptation that will be screened in black-and-white. The eight-episode series also stars Johnny Flynn as Dickie Greenleaf, Dakota Fanning as Marge Sherwood, and acting newcomer Eliot Sumner (son of Sting and Trudie Styler) as Freddie Miles. Written and directed by Oscar winner Steven Zaillian, Ripley was originally set for release on Showtime before it found a new home on Netflix.

Leave it to Adam Sandler to deliver the animated surprise of the holiday season with the “SNL”-influenced “Leo” (currently streaming on Netflix). It’s a smart, funny, existential musical comedy about a jaded 74-year-old class pet lizard (voiced by Sandler), who dispenses advice to Florida fifth graders. It’s also a return to the indie roots of his last animated musical, “Eight Crazy Nights.”
But “Leo” is more personal. It’s the second Sandler family affair this year, following “You Are So Not Invited to My Bat Mitzvah”: Sandler’s wife, Jackie, and his daughters, Sunny and Sadie, voice characters in the film. In fact, the genesis of the project occurred when Sandler put on “Grease” for his daughters when they were tweens and realized that it was inappropriate.
That got Sandler thinking about doing a musical comedy centered around “Grease” for the fifth grade with long-time collaborator,...

Adam Sandler returns to animation in the heartwarming and funny Netflix comedy Leo. He plays Leo, a tuatara nearing the end of his life cycle who tries to break free from his classroom home. Leo features a talented ensemble cast including Bill Burr, Cecily Strong, Jason Alexander, and more. Directors Robert Marianetti and David Wachtenheim discuss their involvement in Leo and how they worked closely with Sandler and co-writer/co-director Robert Smigel. They aimed to elevate others' jokes and bring in heart and emotion to balance out the humor in the film.

The directors of Leo aimed to create a film that can be enjoyed by the whole family, with jokes and relatable moments for both kids and parents. Robert Smigel's favorite song from the film is "Don't Cry" and musically, he enjoys the pop song "When It's Us." Adam Sandler's strength as a writer is his observational and human understanding of people, according to Robert Smigel.
Adam Sandler’s latest collaboration with Netflix is Leo, an animated musical comedy about a 74-year-old class pet who has a mortality scare and decides he needs to break out of his terrarium. The film was co-written by Sandler, Paul Sado, and Robert Smigel and directed by Smigel, Robert Marianetti, and David Wachtenheim. Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel and Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked both made it into the Global Top 10 on Netflix, showcasing an unexpected comeback for the franchise. Along with the Chipmunks sequels, three other animated films also appeared in the Netflix charts, highlighting a dominance of animated content. It is possible that Netflix's algorithm is linking these animated franchises, as viewers who watched one film were recommended others on the list, creating a trend in multiple countries.
Two of the Alvin and the Chipmunks sequel movies squeak their way into the Netflix charts. Opening with 2007’s Alvin and the Chipmunks, the franchise is based on the animated band of chipmunks that first appeared in the TV series The Alvin Show in the 1960s. The first movie was followed up by three sequel films: Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel, Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked, and Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Road Chip.

Adam Sandler's Hotel Transylvania movies are his most successful at the box office, with the third installment earning $527 million worldwide. The success of the franchise is due to its appeal to all ages, with quirky characters that resonate with audiences. Sandler would need to star in another family-friendly movie to have a chance at surpassing the record-breaking earnings of Hotel Transylvania, but this seems unlikely with his upcoming projects on Netflix.
Adam Sandler is best known for roles in various comedies, but his Hotel Transylvania movies hold a massive career record that another film might never break. Since his feature film debut in 1989, Sandler has appeared in dozens of movies, with many of his comedic highlights released in the mid-90s and early 2000s. "Hotel Transylvania: Transformania" lacks the magic of the previous films without Adam Sandler's voice as Dracula. "Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation" is an enjoyable film with a hilarious romance and incorporates more zany humor. "Hotel Transylvania 2" surpasses the original with a refined formula, themes of inclusion, and Adam Sandler's best performance as Dracula.
The Hotel Transylvania series has been a consistent favorite among younger viewers since its inception, with each animated film bringing in an impressive figure at the box office. The films put a lighter, more silly spin on the famous Universal monsters like Dracula and the Wolfman, with all the classic monsters coming together under the roof of Dracula's hotel. Though each installment in this quirky franchise has been a delight in its own way, they weren't all created equal, especially as we dive into the later installments.

It’s the last weekend of a September chock-full of sequels, a few doing better than others. Sure enough, this weekend adds two more, but also a rare original science fiction film. Read on for Gold Derby’s box office preview.
The last few weekends have been so bad at the box office it may point toward audiences being ready for new and original movies. That’s certainly the case with 20th Century Studios’ “The Creator,” a new original science fiction movie from “Rogue One” and “Godzilla” director Gareth Edwards. It stars John David Washington from “Tenet” as a soldier in the war between humans and robots, who travels to Asia to find his missing wife Maya (Gemma Chan), only to be roped into a mission where he must find and kill a synthetic child (Madeleine Yuna Voyles), that could win the war for the robots.

Now that the franchise has ended with its final chapter, the perfect time has come to binge-watch the Hotel Transylvania movies in order. The Hotel Transylvania movies revolve around a spooky hotel run by Dracula, visited by fellow horror icons including the Mummy, the Wolf Man, and Frankenstein’s Monster. From the original movie to Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation, the Hotel Transylvania franchise wrings laughs out of the juxtaposition of the most terrifying monsters in movie history enjoying the simple pleasures of a vacation. Then, Hotel Transylvania: Transformania – advertised as the final film in the saga – wraps up the overarching story with a body-swap premise.

Sony Animation’s “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” is off and swinging at the box office, grossing a massive $17.4 million from 3,500 theaters.
That total is well above the $3.5 million that this sequel’s 2018 Oscar-winning predecessor “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse,” earned from Thursday previews en route to a mid-December $35 million opening. “Across the Spider-Verse” was projected to earn more than double that with tracking at an $80 million-plus launch, with rival distributors projecting an opening of over $90 million.
With this sky-high preview result, the second-biggest ever for an animated film behind “Incredibles 2” ($18.5 million toward a $183 million opening weekend) in 2018, Sony should be looking at a $100 million-plus opening, possibly above $125 million considering the strong reviews, likely-to-be-strong buzz and goodwill from the previous Mile Morales flick.

The Night Agent is quickly making its way toward becoming one of Netflix‘s most popular English-language series of all time.
In its second week on the service, the action thriller amassed another 216.4 million hours viewed from March 27-April 2, easily reigning over the Top 10 for the week. Not only did it increase viewership significantly in its second week, it also has positioned itself to likely be crowned one of Netflix’s all-time most-watched TV series.
Since its release, The Night Agent has tallied 385M viewing hours, making it about 120M away from hitting the all-time Top 10 TV list. Currently the 10th spot is taken by Ginny & Georgia Season 2 with just over half a billion viewing hours.
Last week, the series had the third-best premiere week of viewing across Season 1 TV for any Netflix Original when it clocked more than 160M viewing hours in its first few days on Netflix, only behind Wednesday and Dahmer.

Tammy 2 is an important recurring character in Parks and Recreation because she was Ron Swanson’s second wife. The director of Pawnee, Indiana's titular Parks and Recreation department, Ron is a gruff man who didn’t appear to have time for love. At the same time, he was married three times and could be seen as a genuine romantic when he put in the effort. While Ron didn’t have the same zest for life as his coworker Leslie Knope, he did have a way of charming women when he wasn’t working, hunting, or woodworking.
One of the best Ron and Tammy 2 Parks and Recreation episodes was season 2, episode 8, “Ron and Tammy.” Ron explained to the cameras that Tammy 2 was the second Tammy he had married, and she worked for Pawnee’s library. The decimation of their relationship was obvious once the two were seen together. Tammy 2 was raunchy,...

Despite his massive filmography, very few movies starring comedian Adam Sandler have actually gotten sequels. The movie star has appeared in all kinds of comedies, with his Happy Madison Productions company releasing all kinds of financially successful films since its founding in 1999. The appeal of most of Adam Sandler's comedies is the involvement of the comedian rather than the premise of the films themselves, meaning that only a unique few Adam Sandler movies have been turned into franchises.
The reason for Adam Sandler not doing a lot of sequels seemingly has to do with him not wanting to do them. When asked about sequels to Happy Gilmore, Billy Madison, and Pixels, Adam Sandler's response was that he doesn't think about doing another one, with him saying that he doubts a sequel to these movies will ever happen. These are some of Adam Sandler's most popular films, so the fact that...
