When Yuri on Ice debuted, it gained traction from fans who fell in love with the two leads, figure skating and the narrative. Now, nearly a decade later, a new anime, Medalist, has hit the screens and is here to fill the figure skating void Yuri on Ice left behind. The anime offers a fresh perspective on figure skating and introduces lovable and memorable characters right from the start.
Medalist is a story about breaking through barriers and focuses on the beginning of a figure skater’s career rather than centralizing on seasoned pros. With a stellar first episode, it’s clear that it’s positioned to become a widely loved story with beautiful choreography. While nothing could ever take Yuri on Ice’s place, Medalist already proved to be a unique and eye-catching experience.

If Yuri on Ice is any indicator, figure skating anime has a special way of captivating audiences with the grace and art of the sport. Few series have managed to capture the same beauty of the show that not only broke down barriers but also set new stands for the future of sports anime. The choreography, narrative, and growth between relationships made fans fall in love with Yuri on Ice, and its cancelation broke the hearts of many.
Luckily, figure skating isn’t completely absent from anime and manga. A new anime, airing in 2025, will once again share the beauty of figure skating with fans. While it may not share Yuri on Ice’s popularity just yet, this new series will bring a new perspective on the sport and hook a new generation of fans.
