Halfway through season 1 and "Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man" has been gladly drafting its supporting characters and villains from all corners of Marvel Comics. Peter Parker's (Hudson Thames) best friend Nico Minoru (Grace Song) is from "The Runaways," and his schoolboy crush isn't Mary Jane Watson or Liz Allan -- it's Pearl Pangan (Cathy Ang). In the comics, Pearl is a recently-introduced water-themed superhero named Wave. Time will tell if her animated self takes on that identity, or if Nico will become a sorcerer.
The people who do have super-abilities are the series villains, the latest one being Unicorn/Mila Masaryk. True to her name, she can blast an energy beam from a helmet she wears. In this version, the weapon is supplied by Doctor Otto Octavius (Hugh Dancy). Complementing the Unicorn imagery, Mila wears her hair in a mane-like mohawk.

When you lose everything, it’s the little things that make the difference. And at this moment one of those things, for Jonathan Sims and Kyle Shire, is that Altadena’s Grocery Outlet is still standing.
“Oh my God, oh my God,” Shire says through laughter as we drive past the discount store with a postcard-perfect mural declaring “Greetings from Altadena” on its side, a little patch of normalcy on a street that is now studded with the torched remains of businesses. The couple will soon exclaim over the loss of several favorite spots devoured by the Eaton Fire — a breakfast joint here, a pizza restaurant there — but here is a favorite destination for bargain groceries, suddenly glorious in its mundanity. “I’m so sorry, but I’m really happy to see that grocery store,” Shire says.

Dungeons & Dragons’ Fifth Edition (5e) had several great campaigns, but one is so enduringly popular that it deserves a re-release with the game’s new 2024 ruleset. 5e had over 20 campaign books, and that’s not including tie-ins from properties like Stranger Things, Critical Role, and Rick and Morty. These books were a mixture of fully structured campaigns that led players through a complete narrative like Tomb of Annihilation, and collections of updated classic adventures like Quests from the Infinite Staircase that DMs can run as one shots or build into their own campaigns.
It’s hard to say that there is an objective “best” campaign book from 5e, because Dungeons & Dragons campaigns vary wildly depending on the Dm, the playgroup, and what everyone wants out of an adventure. Players who want more of a dungeon-crawling experience may gravitate toward something like Waterdeep: Dungeon of the Mad Mage, while those...

With the appetite for more Dungeons & Dragons content beyond the original game, one D&D campaign from almost a decade ago has the perfect structure to adapt as a TV show. Once relegated to the niche realm of hardcore tabletop gamers and nerds, Dungeons & Dragons has experienced a surge in growth in the past decade. Since then, Dungeons & Dragons has become Stranger Things' primary inspiration, gotten its own tabletop livestreams like Critical Role, which spawned its own series, The Legend of Vox Machina, and a movie adaptation, Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves.
One of the struggles of adapting Dungeons & Dragons for a TV show or movie is the general lack of a cohesive narrative. Like video games, players themselves build the story as they go along, so by its very nature, most Dungeons & Dragons campaigns don't have much beyond a few key plot points to build the framework.

Critical Role's Darrington Press has revealed a first look at both the standard and limited edition covers for their new game Daggerheart. Announced last year, Daggerheart is a new high-fantasy tabletop RPG that combines action-packed combat with collaborative storytelling and real stakes. The new Ttrpg stands out in part because it's being developed by Darrington Press, the Critical Role-founded game publisher. As Critical Role helped popularize the current Fifth Edition ruleset for Dungeons & Dragons, Daggerheart could emerge as a new dominant force in the world of tabletop games.
At Pax Unplugged, Darrington Press revealed both the standard covers and limited edition covers to the Daggerheart Core Set. The standard cover, illustrated by Mat Wilma, features several adventurers confronting a large monster. The alternate cover by Dominik Meyer also features several adventurers standing in heroic poses, with contrasting bright and dark colors representing the duality between hope and fear...

Critical Role's long-standing video game ambitions could be nearing fruition very soon. Back in 2015, Geek & Sundry launched Critical Role, an Actual Play streaming show featuring a cast of voice actors playing Dungeons & Dragons. The show became an internet phenomenon and eventually became a media empire, with Critical Role selling out stadiums and launching multiple successful animated television shows on Prime Video. Now, Critical Role is its own business, with a tabletop game studio working on a Dungeons & Dragons competitor, its own streaming platform, millions of fans known as Critters, and big plans for the future.
Speaking with Rolling Stone, Critical Role's cast spoke about their desire to make a video game. "The last few years we have been having necessary conversations to figure out how to do that smartly," said Critical Role CEO and cast member Travis Willingham. After 50 years creeping from the margins of popular culture into the mainstream, Dungeons & Dragons is now bigger than ever. Evolving beyond its roots as a pen-and-paper tabletop RPG (Ttrpg), D&d has inspired countless imitators, novels, movies, video games, and — most importantly — generations of storytellers and creators, who learned to broaden the scope of their imagination by playing the game.
It’s those storytellers now whose impact in the era of YouTube, Twitch livestreaming, and podcasting have reinvented Dungeons & Dragons for a new generation, capitalizing on the rise...

Despite the immense success that Baldur's Gate 3 has brought Larian Studios, the Belgium-based developer has chosen not to make a sequel for several reasons and has decided that it would be best to focus on new projects. With BG3 making Larian a mainstream success and elevating the studio into being a Game of the Year winner, it leaves quite a void to fill for Wizards of the Coast in its video gaming sector. Baldur's Gate 4 can be given to another studio, but comparisons to Larian will always be made, and it is a tough act to follow.

There has long been talk of a Dungeons & Dragons live-action TV show, but one hero-villain duo tips the scales in its favor, offering fantasy its next Batman and Joker. Paramount dropped their D&d TV show in the wake of the box office disappointment of Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, but the concept is being shopped around. As such a wide franchise, Dungeons & Dragons has corners that not even all D&D fans know about, ranging from a tabletop game and video game to movies and books. But Dark Elf Drizzt Do'Urden and his arch-nemesis need little introduction.
Drizzt Do'Urden originated in R.A. Salvatore's The Icewind Dale book trilogy in 1988 but has gone on to feature in 39 books that have a semi-cult following. He also features in the Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance video game, and is a playable character in the popular Dungeons & Dragons 5th edition game.

The Legend of Vox Machina is an animated series with three finished seasons available to stream on Amazon Prime Video, with a fourth on the way. The show is based on a series of Dungeons & Dragons sessions put on by the members of Critical Role, a group of voice actors who have spun their hang-out sessions into a media empire.
Because seasons 1, 2, and 3 of The Legend of Vox Machina each covered roughly 30 live Critical Role gameplay sessions, I expect season 4 to take us through episodes 73-100 or so. The Vox Machina campaign runs for 121 episodes in total. That means the creators and voice actors of Critical Role may be planning a fifth season to round out the story, or they could pack all the remaining episodes in season 4. We know they're working on a new animated adaptation of The Mighty Nein, the campaign they played after Vox Machina was finished.

Warning: this article contains spoilers for Season 3 of The Legend of Vox Machina.
In season 3, episode 4 of The Legend of Vox Machina, the devil Zerxus Ilerez hinted to his minion Yenk that Pike Trickfoot's blood was special, and one theory might explain why. Some extent of this power was shown later when she healed her team members and broke them out of Anna Ripley's hallucinogenic toxin not with the power of her faith in the Everlight, but with her own blood. This is a major change from the original campaign that will clearly have consequences in The Legend of Vox Machina season 4.
In the original campaign, Pike had some character development, and it did involve a crisis of faith. However, due to the professional commitments of Pike's player, Ashley Johnson, she didn't get as much screen time as the rest of Vox Machina. With The Legend of Vox Machina now...

Paramount has announced that they won't be following up on Honor Among Thieves with any kind of Dungeons & Dragons TV show, which is disappointing enough, but I'm surprised none of the other studios have jumped at the chance to capitalize on this opportunity. Dungeons & Dragons-inspired films and shows have proven successful. Honor Among Thieves is clearly a streaming success, while The Legend of Vox Machina continues its 100% Rotten Tomatoes streak with its latest season, so you'd think at least someone would recognize just how hungry fans are for more D&d media.

After Amazon Prime Video struck gold with the animated adaptation of Critical Role's first DnD campaign, The Legend of Vox Machina, The Mighty Nein is in the works, which will adapt the second. Critical Role is a web series which follows professional actors as they play Dungeons & Dragons across dozens of episodes, crafting fascinating campaigns and beloved fantasy characters. The Mighty Nein is the second such campaign featured on Critical Role, and the animated adaptation will follow a band of adventurers who must prevent an arcane artifact from falling into the wrong hands.

“The Legend of the Vox Machina” cast members and creative producers Laura Bailey, Taliesin Jaffe, Marisha Ray, Sam Riegel gathered at the tavern in Critical Role-Land to announce, ahead of the Season 3 finale, that Prime Video has renewed the animated series for a Season 4. All three seasons have achieved a +5 modifier for television shows — otherwise known as a 100 percent Rotten Tomatoes score.
Based on the Dungeons & Dragons series “Critical Role,” “The Legend of Vox Machina” animates the D&d campaign to bring it to full, fiery life — with the original campaigners reprising their roles. In Season 3, the Chroma Conclave’s path of destruction spreads like wildfire while the Cinder King hunts down Vox Machina. The lovable band of misfits must rise above inner (and outer) demons to save their loved ones, Tal’Dorei, and all of Exandria. Viewers can stream this week’s finale on Prime Video to see how this chapter will close.

The Legend of Vox Machina is currently tearing through its third season on Amazon Prime Video, and the fans are responding: the most recent installment, "Thordak's Throne," is the highest-rated episode in the show's history on IMDb, and it looks like they're going to charge full-throttle towards an exciting endgame; the final three episodes of season 3 drop tomorrow.
Vox Machina is an animated adaptation of a Dungeons & Dragons campaign played by the voice actors of Critical Role, and it has everything you'd expect from a show with that pedigree: adventure, violence, goofy jokes, dragons and more. For this TV version, the cast and crew have changed the plot around a bit so the dramatic twists hit harder, and we can't say for sure that the season 3 finale will follow the game beat for beat. In Critical Role's original version, the adventures of the Vox Machina crew continue for a...

It still baffles me that the 2014 5e Dungeons & Dragons system managed to sell the idea of rulings, not rules as a feature for Dungeon Masters and players, instead of obviously lazy design, but the revised 2024 Players Handbook has no excuse for its half-finished rules a decade later. The philosophy presented at the time of 5es release was in line with an old school gaming sentiment that prioritized Dm judgments over the system providing clearly laid out rules. By avoiding some of the legalistic keyword-driven language of 3e and 4e DnD, new players and DMs found 5e approachable.
Keyword based systems typically define keywords, then refer back to those, while "naturalistic" systems use common language interpretations of words. The 5e DnD designed bizarrely mixed both in 2014, and continues to do so in 2024.
Many will point out how 5e was a massive commercial success, as 2020 was DnDs best year financially, and...

Critical Role's return to Prime Video is another animated hit for the streaming service, as The Legend of Vox Machina achieves a perfect Rotten Tomatoes score with its season 3 premiere. The Dungeons and Dragons-inspired series is an adaptation of the first campaign of the beloved tabletop game webcast featuring many recognizable voice actors from animation and video games. After facing terrifying foes from the past in season 1 and a conspiracy of dragons in season 2, season 3 sees the titular party take a stand against the wave of destruction the Chroma Conclave brings.
With the first three episodes of The Legends of Vox Machina season 3 debuting on Prime Video, the series has earned a highly-coveted status on Rotten Tomatoes. With a score aggregated from seven critical reviews, the series has earned a score of 100% for season 3. In a surprising turn of events, Sucker Punch has unveiled Ghost of Yotei, the highly anticipated sequel to their 2020 hit, Ghost of Tsushima. But while fans are excited to return to the world of feudal Japan, some are less than thrilled about the game’s new female protagonist, Atsu, who will be played by none other than the talented Erika Ishii.

That’s right, folks—Jin Sakai, the stoic samurai who stole everyone’s hearts in the first game, will not be returning for the sequel. And apparently, that’s just too much for some “fans” to handle!

With over twenty seasons to its name, Dimension 20's varied and hilarious seasons have helped make DropOut one of the best streamers available. Dimension 20 is similar to other actual play shows like Critical Role, where the cast of talented performers improvise their way through a massive story bolstered by TTRPGs like Dungeons & Dragons and Kids on Bikes. However, whereas Critical Role campaigns can last over a hundred episodes, Dimension 20 frequently hops between casts and settings for shorter seasons that range between 4 and 20 episodes. Trying to figure out which seasons are the best can be deceptively tricky.
Make no mistake, each of the show's over twenty seasons have their own strengths. The nature-focused "Burrow's End" and "Mice & Murder," the noir-style Inside Out world of "Mentopolis," the monster college of "Shriek Week," and "Tiny Heist's" fairy-folk heist are all strong solo-season stories, and the various other...

Dropout has ordered a second season for its “Misfits & Magic” edition of table-top roleplaying game show “Dimension 20,” which is scheduled to premiere Sept. 25 on the streamer.
“Years after the events of season one, the Pilot Program must embark on a quest for the future of magic,” the show’s logline teases.
The 11-episode season, led by game master Aabria Iyengar, will rollout out new episodes weekly on Wednesdays.
The cast for the second season of “Dimension 20: Misfits & Magic” will include Brennan Lee Mulligan as Evan Kelmp, Erika Ishii as K , Danielle Radford as Sam Black and Lou Wilson as Whitney Jammer.

The third season of The Legend of Vox Machina is coming down the bend, and it's going to be a big one. This season will end the Chroma Conclave arc, which finds our band of misfit heroes facing down a conspiracy of dragons, and launch the franchise to new heights. "Season 3 is going to leave a mark," star Travis Willingham (Grog) told Entertainment Weekly. "It is going to test individual characters; it's going to test relationships, both familial and of a romantic variety; but it's also going to start to show the lines of division in this tight-knit family that is really starting to feel the pressure of the world and things even beyond the realm of Exandria. This is the first season where not everything is going to be the same at the end in the way that it started."

We know podcasting is big business. It’s been one of the fastest-growing sectors of digital content for years, got a growth boost during the pandemic that drove listening up by over 40%, and is now worth over $25 billion. We hear about podcasters landing multimillion-dollar deals with distributors. But what about creators producing their shows independently? How much money are they making?
Well, according to Patreon, the 40,000+ podcasters using its platform raked in a collective $350 million from their patrons in 2023. To put that number in context, the entire global podcast market is expected to make around $4 billion from advertising this year.

This article contains plot spoilers for Critical Role “Campaign Three: Bells Hells.”
Critical Role’s current campaign, “Bells Hells,” isn’t the first time that inner-party conflict has come up for the cast. Beuregard (Marisha Ray) and Caleb (Liam O’Brien) fought over a magical bowl in The Mighty Nein campaign. Scanlan (Sam Riegel) left Vox Machina for an entire year. But where Bells Hells stands out above the rest is just how often its zany cast of characters find themselves at odds with one another, and how both the cast and the characters handle the conflict.
Bells Hells is certainly the most eclectic group of adventurers that the Critical Role cast has portrayed, and if you’ve kept up with the show for any amount of time, you know that that means this group is really out there. There’s Fresh Cut Grass a.k.a. Fcg (Sam Riegel), an...

There’s a meta moment in Season 8 of “Jet Lag: The Game” when the stars of the unscripted travel competition series are seated on a plane behind a fan watching an episode of the show on the streaming platform Nebula. One of Travis Willingham’s top-tier wishes is for a “Critical Role” campaign to be adapted into a full-fledged “Dungeons and Dragons” feature film.
“The ‘Critical Role’ world is stacked with stories—there is a huge clamoring for the ‘Exandria Unlimited: Calamity.’ I think every form of distribution is great [but] we have never made a feature before,” Willingham said. “One thing we’ve consistently done at ‘Critical Role’ is we’ve tried to find where the ceiling is. What are we capable of doing? What are our wildest dreams, and are we able to achieve those? I think the desire is there. It might just be a matter of finding the time for everything else, but I think the potential is certainly there.”

Critical Role is expanding Exandria through animation, with potential for more projects beyond The Legend of Vox Machina and Mighty Nein. Travis Willingham discussed future projects noting interest in Calamity, and hinting at non-cr ideas being talked about as well. The Calamity miniseries offers a compelling and tragic story, shedding light on Exandria's history and showcasing the potential of Critical Role's adult animation.
Critical Role continues to expand the world of Exandria through animation, with the third season of The Legend of Vox Machina and Mighty Nein both on the horizon. Their overall television and first-look film deal with Prime means many more projects could be in their future with countless one-shots and mini-series, the Bells Hells campaign, and even Candela Obscura, all offering dynamic stories that could be perfect for television series or movies. After a nearly two-year wait, Vox Machina — Critical Role’s motley crew of D&d adventurers — will return to Exandria on Prime Video.
“The Legend of Vox Machina” Season 3 is set to premiere Oct. 3 on Amazon’s Prime Video, comprising 12 episodes, with three episodes of the hit animated fantasy-adventure series premiering every week starting Oct. 3. Prime Video also released a new opening title sequence (watch below).
Everything is at stake in Season 3 of “The Legend of Vox Machina”: The Chroma Conclave’s path of destruction spreads like wildfire while the Cinder King hunts down Vox Machina. The lovable band of misfits must rise above inner (and outer) demons to try and save their loved ones, the Tal’Dorei republic — and all of Exandria.
Season 2 of “Vox Machina” came out in January 2023. Prime Video greenlit the show’s third season the previous October, after Season 1 debuted in January 2022.

Audience members determine character choices and story direction in the interactive Dungeons & Dragons experience, Twenty Sided Tavern. Gamiotics technology allows for audience participation in decision-making, mini-games, and character creation. The show offers a unique live theater experience, blending comedy, storytelling, and audience engagement for a new experience with every performance.
Twenty Sided Tavern is an interactive Dungeons & Dragons experience like nothing else. The off-Broadway show invites audiences to step into a fantastical world and, instead of simply watching like most Actual Plays they are instrumental in the decision making. Using Gamiotics the Tavern Keepers and Dungeon Master lead a hilariously silly game of Dungeons & Dragons with three players playing out their characters on stage instead of rolling dice and using theater of the mind. Audiences are engaged as storytellers from the moment they sit down, deciding everything which character each player will emody and which direction the story takes.

The upcoming edition of D&d is available for preorder on June 18. The new Player's Handbook could address persisting spellcasting issues with its art. The new edition may enhance spellcasting components for more dynamic gameplay.
Since 2014, Dungeons and Dragons has been using and supporting its fifth edition. Thanks to some good luck, massive gaming projects, and famous fan shows, 5e has become D&d's most popular version, breaking into the mainstream. Several factors can be attributed to this, such as 5e's ease of play compared to older versions and shows like Stranger Things and Critical Role popularizing the tabletop RPG for wider audiences. Baldur's Gate 3's success has also helped in this regard, and all three have been made during the 5e era, but D&d is looking to move beyond its fifth edition.

After building an audience of more than 3.5 million viewers across YouTube and Twitch, Critical Role is hoping some of those folks will follow it off those platforms to its new subscription service, Beacon.
But hold on—if you’re thinking this is a repeat of Watcher‘s recent stumble, CritRole CEO and cast member Travis Willingham is quick to reassure that Beacon isn’t a way for Critical Role to paywall its ongoing content.
“Now, I’m sure many of you are asking, ‘Wait, what does this mean for Twitch and YouTube subscribers?'” he said in Beacon’s announcement video (embedded below). “And the answer is: nothing. Nothing changes for those audiences in how you view our main shows. Critical Role may consider leaving DnD 5e due to a number of factors with the game itself and its publisher. The company is developing its own Ttrpg, Daggerheart, to possibly replace DnD. The potential release of DnD 5.5e in late 2024 could influence Critical Role's decision to switch systems.
Critical Role has used Dungeons & Dragons' fifth edition ever since it debuted back in 2015. With its simple, easy to understand mechanics, well-known reputation, and relatively fast gameplay for a tabletop game, it made it the perfect system for the streaming show, so much so that other shows, like Dimension 20, have followed in the same vein. Still, with the constant controversy that Wizards of the Coast seems to find itself in, Critical Role could look at leaving the system behind.
This wouldn't be the first time the Critical Role cast has switched systems, nor would it be the first big company to leave the IP behind.

Critical Role's Daggerheart enters beta testing, offering Domain Cards and d12 dice as unique features for TTRPGs. Daggerheart's success depends on distinguishing itself from D&d, which could be difficult given the similarity in classes and races. With Critical Role's devoted fanbase, Daggerheart has the potential to achieve success, especially if Matt Mercer adopts it for a new campaign.
Critical Role has aided in the recent resurgence of Dungeons & Dragons, being its biggest live game stream. For some, the show is the reason they got into D&d's fifth edition, and it is the gold standard as to what 5e can be, yet Matt Mercer and the cast seem intent on distancing themselves from Wizards of the Coast. As of March 2024, Daggerheart, Cr's very own fantasy tabletop RPG, has entered beta testing.
Some will be surprised to know that Critical Role did not start life as a D&d campaign.

Matthew Lillard knows the power of fandoms.
He’s been surrounded by them for decades, having played iconic characters in everything from Scream to Scooby-Doo to Five Nights at Freddy’s, and now his liquor company Find Familiar Spirits is partying up with Critical Role to launch a limited-edition collectible liquor based on their first campaign, Vox Machina.
The liquor, Sandkheg’s Hide, comes straight from episode 65 of the campaign, where Travis Willingham‘s character Grog buys a couple bottles and promptly gets the gang smashed.
In Critical Role’s Dungeons & Dragons universe, Sandkheg’s Hide is secreted by giant insectoids. But Irl, Find Familiar Spirits’ master blender Ale Ochoa made the drink into a bourbon with notes of baked apple, brown spice, shortbread cookies, oak, herbs, dried red fruit, and “a hint of smoke.”

Baldur's Gate 3 players can now incorporate items from Critical Role into their game for a fun and unique experience. The Vestiges of Divergence mod adds powerful gear like Cabal's Ruin and Fenthras to Baldur's Gate. Players can choose to equip more than three Vestiges at once, potentially creating an unbeatable character in the game.
Baldur's Gate 3 players looking to show off their love for the beloved series Critical Role can now do so with some exceptionally well-crafted items pulled directly from the show. Given that both are inspired by and make use of the rules of Dungeons & Dragons Fifth Edition, it makes sense that some creative fans would find a way to unite Matt Mercer's ever-popular campaign with Larian Studios' RPG. While plenty of mods already exist that incorporate characters and locations from Critical Role, this creation is more subtle and, arguably, much more fun.

The animated series The Legend of Vox Machina highlights the adventures of the Vox Machina team in their fantasy world. It’s not just video games that dominate the digital airwaves on platforms like Twitch — there’s a huge contingent of viewers who yearn for the old days of pen and paper, with tabletop RPGs making a huge splash virtually in the last few years. In fact, once-niche games like Dungeons & Dragons (which turns 50 this year) have taken on new life in the age of livestreaming, and more popular than ever.

D&d has real-world benefits for both young people and adults, teaching valuable skills that can be applied in life. The game promotes communication, problem-solving, adaptability, and coping with failure, among other skills. D&d provides an escape from personal issues and offers a safe space to explore complex subjects and develop confidence.
Dungeons & Dragons lets people unleash their imagination in worlds of their own creation as they set off on adventures. However, despite taking place primarily in a fantasy setting, DnD has some great real world benefits too. At its heart, DnD is a social game which has the power to provide skills and experiences that can be transferred into people’s lives.
Boosted by the game's role in Netflix's Stranger Things and the rise of actual play shows such as Critical Role, High Rollers, and Dimension 20, many more have been seeking out groups to start playing.
