Halfway through season 1 and "Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man" has been gladly drafting its supporting characters and villains from all corners of Marvel Comics. Peter Parker's (Hudson Thames) best friend Nico Minoru (Grace Song) is from "The Runaways," and his schoolboy crush isn't Mary Jane Watson or Liz Allan -- it's Pearl Pangan (Cathy Ang). In the comics, Pearl is a recently-introduced water-themed superhero named Wave. Time will tell if her animated self takes on that identity, or if Nico will become a sorcerer.

The people who do have super-abilities are the series villains, the latest one being Unicorn/Mila Masaryk. True to her name, she can blast an energy beam from a helmet she wears. In this version, the weapon is supplied by Doctor Otto Octavius (Hugh Dancy). Complementing the Unicorn imagery, Mila wears her hair in a mane-like mohawk.

Critical Role will host a live one-shot Dungeons & Dragons adventure fundraiser to help those affected by the Los Angeles fires. The livestream, titled “Freaky Thursday,” will be held on Jan. 30 and will feature Bells Hells, and other key characters.

The “chaotic and interactive” livestream will feature the characters played by Ashley Johnson, Marisha Ray, Taliesin Jaffe, Travis Willingham, Sam Riegel, Laura Bailey, and Liam O’Brien and game master Matthew Mercer.

As such a wide franchise, Dungeons & Dragons has corners that not even all D&D fans know about, ranging from a tabletop game and video game to movies and books. But Dark Elf Drizzt Do'Urden and his arch-nemesis need little introduction.

Drizzt Do'Urden originated in R.A. Salvatore's The Icewind Dale book trilogy in 1988 but has gone on to feature in 39 books that have a semi-cult following. The Legend of Vox Machina is an animated series with three finished seasons available to stream on Amazon Prime Video, with a fourth on the way. The show is based on a series of Dungeons & Dragons sessions put on by the members of Critical Role, a group of voice actors who have spun their hang-out sessions into a media empire.

Because seasons 1, 2, and 3 of The Legend of Vox Machina each covered roughly 30 live Critical Role gameplay sessions, I expect season 4 to take us through episodes 73-100 or so. The Vox Machina campaign runs for 121 episodes in total. That means the creators and voice actors of Critical Role may be planning a fifth season to round out the story, or they could pack all the remaining episodes in season 4. We know they're working on a new animated adaptation of The Mighty Nein, the campaign they played after Vox Machina was finished.

It still baffles me that the 2014 5e Dungeons & Dragons system managed to sell the idea of rulings, not rules as a feature for Dungeon Masters and players, instead of obviously lazy design, but the revised 2024 Players Handbook has no excuse for its half-finished rules a decade later. The philosophy presented at the time of 5es release was in line with an old school gaming sentiment that prioritized Dm judgments over the system providing clearly laid out rules. By avoiding some of the legalistic keyword-driven language of 3e and 4e DnD, new players and DMs found 5e approachable.

Keyword based systems typically define keywords, then refer back to those, while "naturalistic" systems use common language interpretations of words. The 5e DnD designed bizarrely mixed both in 2014, and continues to do so in 2024.

After a nearly two-year wait, Vox Machina — Critical Role’s motley crew of D&d adventurers — will return to Exandria on Prime Video.

“The Legend of Vox Machina” Season 3 is set to premiere Oct. 3 on Amazon’s Prime Video, comprising 12 episodes, with three episodes of the hit animated fantasy-adventure series premiering every week starting Oct. 3. Prime Video also released a new opening title sequence (watch below).

The release date for The Legend of Vox Machina season 3 has been revealed in a new video. The animated Prime Video show is based on an actual Dungeons & Dragons campaign played on the web series Critical Role during their first season, which aired between 2015 and 2017. The Legend of Vox Machina cast features Critical Role members Laura Bailey, Liam O'Brien, Taliesin Jaffe, Matthew Mercer, Ashley Johnson, Sam Riegel, Marisha Ray, and Travis Willingham providing the voices for their original characters.

Baldur's Gate 3's success has also helped in this regard, and all three have been made during the 5e era, but D&d is looking to move beyond its fifth edition.

But hold on—if you’re thinking this is a repeat of Watcher‘s recent stumble, CritRole CEO and cast member Travis Willingham is quick to reassure that Beacon isn’t a way for Critical Role to paywall its ongoing content.

Critical Role may consider leaving DnD 5e due to a number of factors with the game itself and its publisher. The company is developing its own Ttrpg, Daggerheart, to possibly replace DnD. The potential release of DnD 5.5e in late 2024 could influence Critical Role's decision to switch systems.

Critical Role has used Dungeons & Dragons' fifth edition ever since it debuted back in 2015. With its simple, easy to understand mechanics, well-known reputation, and relatively fast gameplay for a tabletop game, it made it the perfect system for the streaming show, so much so that other shows, like Dimension 20, have followed in the same vein. Still, with the constant controversy that Wizards of the Coast seems to find itself in, Critical Role could look at leaving the system behind.

This wouldn't be the first time the Critical Role cast has switched systems, nor would it be the first big company to leave the IP behind.

Critical Role's Daggerheart enters beta testing, offering Domain Cards and d12 dice as unique features for TTRPGs. Daggerheart's success depends on distinguishing itself from D&d, which could be difficult given the similarity in classes and races. With Critical Role's devoted fanbase, Daggerheart has the potential to achieve success, especially if Matt Mercer adopts it for a new campaign.

Critical Role has aided in the recent resurgence of Dungeons & Dragons, being its biggest live game stream. For some, the show is the reason they got into D&d's fifth edition, and it is the gold standard as to what 5e can be, yet Matt Mercer and the cast seem intent on distancing themselves from Wizards of the Coast. As of March 2024, Daggerheart, Cr's very own fantasy tabletop RPG, has entered beta testing.
