Last Year’s Winner: “Sherlock: The Abominable Bride”
Hot Streak: HBO has won more awards in this category than all the other networks combined. They have 19 total Emmys. CBS and NBC are tied for the second highest total – six.
Fun Fact: “Jackie” fans take note: The First Lady was awarded an Emmy for “A Tour of the White House,” her famous televised walking tour that highlighted the historical alterations and preservations she’d help make to the White House. Jackie Kennedy remains the only First Lady to win a statue (though Michelle Obama’s “Billy on the Street” segment was nominated in 2015).

HBO’s dominance in the TV Movie category is well-known, even if the network was upset by an “Abominable Bride” last year. It’s back with a vengeance in 2017, touting three big-name contenders with built-in followers.

When former President Ronald Reagan was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s in 1994, he went directly to the people.
“It was so true of him, so symbolic Ronald Reagan,” the president’s former executive assistant, Peggy Grande, tells People. “He spoke directly to the American people, frankly, forthrightly and with optimism.”
Grande is detailing her time with the late president – including those final years during which he was quietly robbed of his ability to communicate – in a new memoir, The President Will See You Now, out Feb. 21.

Tim Matheson is no stranger to politics -- onscreen and off.
On The West Wing, the longtime actor -- perhaps still fondly remembered for playing Otter in Animal House -- played Vice President John Hoynes, earning two Emmy nominations for the role. Most recently, he portrayed President Ronald Reagan in National Geographic Channel’s adaptation of Killing Reagan. The part earned him well-deserved award buzz, including a Critics’ Choice Television Award nomination for Best Actor in a Movie/Miniseries.
“I was not politically aligned with Ronald Reagan -- nor am I today -- but you can’t act politics,” Matheson tells Et by phone, just a week after the election. The 68-year-old actor has made no secret of his support of Hillary Clinton or dismay over the election of Donald Trump. While he’s steadfast in his own politics, which vastly differ from the likes of Reagan or even Trump, Matheson set those...

The 22nd Critics’ Choice Award is less than a month away. We may be enjoying the shiny new TV season, and while it may seem all fun and new, critics are all to ready to begin awarding some honors. The Broadcast Television Journalists Association have officially announced, via Entertainment Weekly, the TV nominees.
Leading the pack with six nominations is The People v. O.J. Simpson, not a huge surprise given its subject matter and solid execution. Also of note are the sheer number of nominations that HBO has under its belt this year — 22 in total. Noticeably absent are this year’s Netflix Marvel shows. Despite being great TV, it still seems like critics are unwilling to give comic book adaptations their fair shake come awards season.
Oh well. Better luck next year, I suppose? The film nominations will be announced on December 1, 2016.

The 22nd Annual Critics’ Choice Awards announced its list of nominees Monday, with HBO leading the pack with 22 nominations. ABC and Netflix received 14 nominations each, followed by FX with 12. The winners will be announced at the Critics’ Choice Awards gala in Santa Monica on Sunday, December 11. T.J. Miller will serve as the show’s host.
The awards show has been swirled in controversy since sealing an exclusive partnership with Entertainment Weekly earlier this month. The surprise decision essentially turned the Critics Choice Awards into an Entertainment Weekly event. Journalists who quit the Broadcast Television Journalists Association as a result include IndieWire’s Michael Schneider, TVLine’s Michael Ausiello, Variety’s Debra Birnbaum, Buzzfeed’s Jarett Wieselman, TV Guide Magazine’s Matt Roush, Variety’s Maureen Ryan, Media Village’s Ed Martin, and Us Weekly’s John Griffiths.

Bill O’Reilly‘s “Killing Reagan” co-author Martin Dugard fired back at Washington Post columnist Erik Wemple on Sunday, questioning the motive of the “Reagan apologists” at the paper after Wemple published a story calling the book “historical fraud.” Wemple suggested that a sequence in the book has “factual problems” and even dug up video to prove his point, but Dugard disagrees. The “Killing Reagan” co-author questioned Wemple’s motive, pointing to Washington Post publisher Frederick Ryan, a former Reagan White House staffer who has written numerous books on the president. “Thus, Mr. Ryan’s motivations and Mr. Wemple’s...

Based on Bill O’Reilly and Martin Dugard’s bestseller about John Hinckley Jr.’s attempt on Ronald Reagan’s life in 1981, Killing Reagan has a fine First Couple.
Tim Matheson captures the essence of the Reagan persona — a born performer whose public and private selves were so in sync, perhaps even happily, that they became indistinguishable.
After making an important decision, the President pops candy into his mouth and smiles with satisfaction. This, one imagines, is a man whose every gesture is a recapitulation of some moment he once played on camera or witnessed in an old movie. Somehow this endless,...

Tim Matheson recalls the moment that President Ronald Reagan was shot in 1981.
The Killing Reagan star, who plays the late 40th U.S. president in the Nat Geo TV movie, remembers that he was shooting the film A Little Sex along the Hudson River in N.Y. when news broke about the attempted murder.

Cynthia Nixon spent the first half of her 40s going through a de-Mirandafication, to borrow from a New York article written a decade ago. She had to take herself out of the Sex and the City game and put herself in the “mom” space, because as a 40-something female actress, that’s about the extent of the roles available to you.
Now, like Satc co-star and real-life bestie Sarah Jessica Parker is doing, she’s excited to take on juicier roles. Parker’s upcoming HBO show Divorce -- which Nixon doesn’t have any plans to guest on but would jump at the opportunity -- is about a woman who, in the midst of a life crisis, surprises her husband (Thomas Haden Church) by asking for a divorce.
“I like that,” she says, referring to Divorce, which she hasn’t seen yet. “In your 30s and 40s you just play moms. Let me tell...

The story of the reclusive American poet Emily Dickinson comes to life in Terence Davies’ “A Quiet Passion,” which will be screened at the Toronto International Film Festival this fall.
A new festival trailer for the period drama was just released and showcases Cynthia Nixon as the renowned artist as she struggles with the world around her.
“A Quiet Passion” is a unique insight into Dickinson’s life and obsessions, and follows the writer from her schoolgirl days in Amherst, Massachusetts to her years writing in near-total isolation, where she produced over a thousand poems that are now regarded as the finest and most inventive in American literature.

"Last time I checked, I am in control here." We don't usually cover TV trailers, but this one seems like it's worth making an exception for. Killing Reagan is a feature film for the National Geographic Channel made by filmmaker Rod Lurie. It's an adaptation of the book of the same name retelling the events of the assassination attempt on President Ronald Reagan in March of 1981. Actor Tim Matheson plays Reagan, Cynthia Nixon plays his wife Nancy, and the cast includes Joe Chrest, Joel Murray, Gary Weeks, and Kyle S. More as John Hinckley Jr, who tried to shoot Reagan while at the Washington Hilton Hotel in Washington, D.C. in an attempt to impress actress Jodie Foster. Even though this is technically a TV movie, it looks like it has some strong performances in it, and it might be worth catching when it airs. Take a look. Here's the...

“The Contender” director Rod Lurie has landed a pilot order at TNT for “Monsters of God,” a drama that chronicles Colonel “Terrible” Bill Lancaster’s holy war against the Comanche in post-Civil War Texas.
“Monsters of God” was previously developed at Starz. The project has been a long-gestating passion project for Lurie, a former U.S. Army artillery officer who has spent a great deal of time researching the Comanche Wars.
TNT confirmed the greenlight Sunday during its portion of the TV Critics Association press tour, where it also announced that it had ordered new Charles Barkey series “The Race Card,” and renewed “The Last Ship” for a fourth season.

Nat Geo’s adaptation of Bill O’Reilly’s Killing Reagan will dodge the controversy spawned by the book’s suggestion that Ronald Reagan suffered intellectual decline after an assassination attempt on his life. “We deal with the assassination attempt in a limited way,” screenwriter Eric Simonson told TV critics at TCA. The “limited way” doesn’t include O’Reilly’s depiction of Reagan’s dementia. “One of the decisions Eric had to make is what do we not include from the book,”…...

It's been 35 years since John Hinckley Jr. attempted to assassinate President Ronald Reagan in 1981, but the upcoming October premiere of Killing Reagan is as relevant as ever given the recent news that Hinckley will be released from institutional psychiatric care. "It is extraordinarily timely," director Rod Lurie told reporters Saturday at the Television Critics Association summer press tour. "He's not coming to the premiere; I'll tell you that." Like Nat Geo's three previous Killing movies, Killing Reagan is an adaptation of Fox News anchor Bill O'Reilly's 2015 New York Times best-seller of the same name. The film both center
