The then new 'Wellington' series-D five pound notes are seen throughout the series. While these were definitely in use but still coming into play as currency, the previous series were still common. Every scene where there is a £5 note shown, shows the new series...including the ones buried in the late 60s after an old robbery. Series D was introduced in October 1971 as part of the decimal changeover and even in the banks, many of the older series would have been used.
The plot summary tells that Jane Tennison is 22 years old in 1973, which would make her 55 in 2006, Helen Mirren's last appearance in 'Prime Suspect 7-The Final Act'-this is five years past the mandatory retirement age. Exceptions can be made in certain cases, but these apply only to more senior ranks than hers (Det. Supt). Furthermore, in 'The Final Act', Tennison tells Penny Philips that she joined the Met. as a 17-year-old probationer. She would have spent some time at Hendon, but hardly five years.
