The nominations have been revealed for the 2025 GLAAD Media Awards, and one critically acclaimed LGBTQ+ film is notably absent from the pack of nominees.

The annual awards ceremony will return for a 36th year in 2025. According to GLAAD, it’s goal is to “recognize and honor fair, accurate, and inclusive representations of the LGBTQ community in an ever-expanding and media landscape.”

On Wednesday (January 22), the organization revealed the crop of nominees that would be honored at the ceremony. While projects such as Wicked and Queer were notably featured, Netflix’s Emilia Perez was left off the list.

The snub comes after GLAAD declared that the movie, which stars Zoe Saldana, Selena Gomez and trans actress Karla Sofia Gascon, was “not good trans representation” in a November 2024 essay. The story included reviews from transgender film critics and noted that “inauthentic portrayals of trans people are offensive and even dangerous.”

The 36th annual GLAAD Media Awards nominations list included one significant omission. Netflix’s Emilia Pérez was left off the nonprofit advocacy group’s list of “303 culture-changing nominees across 33 categories, honoring outstanding fair, accurate, and inclusive representations of LGBTQ people and issues in film, television, gaming, publishing, stage productions, music, podcasting, journalism, and more.”

The snub further illustrates the disconnect between LGBTQ media and the entertainment industry over the controversial crime musical from French filmmaker Jacques Audiard. Emilia Pérez is widely predicted to receive several Oscar nominations on Thursday. The movie could set multiple Academy Awards records, including the most nominations ever for an international film and the most nominations for any film. GLAAD has unveiled the nominees for its 36th annual GLAAD Media Awards, with Variety securing two noms for outstanding print article (senior entertainment writer Adam B. Vary’s piece on Joe Locke) and magazine overall coverage.

Other nominees include “Wicked,” “Queer,” “Love Lies Bleeding,” “My Old Ass,” “Abbott Elementary,” “Hacks,” “What We Do in the Shadows,” “Fancy Dance,” “Mother of the Bride,” “Baby Reindeer,” “Selling Sunset,” “Queer Eye” and “Real Housewives of New York City.” There are a total of 318 nominees across 33 categories at this year’s Awards.

Five long years after Vivziepop’s 2019 release of the Hazbin Hotel YouTube pilot “That’s Entertainment!”, the animated musical series returned for its first season on Amazon Prime. However, the highly-anticipated release of Hazbin Hotel season 1 brought with it a major change that was met with criticism from the series’ cult following.

Between the 2019 release of the YouTube pilot and the 2024 release of season 1 via Amazon Prime and A24, Vivziepop re-auditioned each major role, leading to a group recasting of Hazbin Hotel. This new Hazbin Hotel season 1 cast was met with a good deal of pushback from Hellaverse fans who had been following the project since its Patreon-funded inception, and vague communication from the show creator led to speculation about the reasons behind this drastic change. However, the fact that Hazbin Hotel season 1 set a Prime Video streaming record seems to indicate that the change may have been for the better.

Vivziepop’s two hit animated series, Helluva Boss and Hazbin Hotel, exist in the same fictional universe, colloquially known as the Hellaverse. This overlap between the two musicals has created the perfect opportunity for Hazbin Hotel Easter eggs to exist in Helluva Boss, and vice versa. Vivziepop has certainly delivered on this score, with character cameos, subtle background imagery, and many other fun references made between the Helluva and Hazbin worlds.

Season 2 of Hazbin Hotel has burning questions to answer regarding Lilith, the backstory of Demon Overlords Alastor (Amir Talai) and Vox (Christian Borle), and the fate of the Hazbin Hotel after the battle between Heaven and Hell. Likewise, the Helluva Boss season 2 ending has brewed speculation on the newly revealed Deadly Sins as well as Stolas’ future after the trial in “Mastermind.” As fans eagerly anticipate the upcoming seasons, these Hazbin Hotel Easter eggs in Helluva Boss deserve another look.

Animated musical series Hazbin Hotel wrapped up its first season in 2024, providing welcome relief to fans given the five-year wait that followed the 2019 YouTube pilot. A lot happened in this season finale of Helluva Boss, which had Stolas acclimating to his new life of poverty while living with Blitzo. But on Sinsmas, a day in which Hellborns celebrate their birth sins, Stolas attempts to see his daughter, Octavia, only for his relationship with her to seemingly become irreparable.

Prime Video has renewed its freshman animated series Secret Level for a second season. Additional new episodes from Season 1 were released on the streamer today.

Fans were giddy to see the latest episode of Helluva Boss indirectly name-dropped a pivotal character in Hazbin Hotel.

The Direct had previously interviewed Hazbin Hotel and Helluva Boss creator Vivienne Medrano at San Diego Comic-Con about the possibility of a crossover, in which she said, "I'm pretty positive that things will happen" between the two series and that "it's never been more possible."

Despite Medrano's confidence in a crossover, some fans were still concerned with the possibility since Helluva Boss is completely independent and Hazbin Hotel is co-produced by A24 and distributed by Amazon MGM Studio. The hit Hazbin Hotel spin-off (available for free on YouTube) provided a hilarious and heartbreaking story parallel to that of its streaming big brother. It follows the employees of I.M.P, an imp-run assassination agency working in the depths of Hell.

The first season of A24 and Prime Video's smash-hit animated series "Hazbin Hotel" ended on February 2, 2024, and while the creative team is hard at work on season 2, the show's popularity hasn't decreased. "Hazbin Hotel" earned the largest global debut viewership for a new animated title on Prime Video, surpassing other hot commodities like "Invincible" and "The Boys Presents: Diabolical." The series doesn't boast the same recognizable IP as its contemporaries, but that hasn't stopped it from becoming a phenomenon. In the months since the season's end, convention circuits have shown that "Hazbin Hotel" has become one of the most popular shows for cosplayers to emulate, fanart floods social media feeds on the daily, but thanks to the death of the monoculture, the popularity often feels like it exists in a vacuum.

I've previously described "Hazbin Hotel" as adult animation, but too edgy for the constraints of something like "The Simpsons.
