The Wild Robot dominated the 2025 Annie Awards honoring the best achievements in animation. The DreamWorks toon came in with 10 nominations across nine categories, and it won all of them: Best Feature, Best FX, Best Character Animation, Best Character Design, Best Direction, Best Music, Best Production Design, Best Voice Acting (Lupita Nyong’o), and Best Editorial.

The Annies win capped a momentous weekend for The Wild Robot, which also took the animated feature prizes at the Producers Guild of America Awards and Critics Choice Awards, cementing its position as the favorite going into the Academy Awards on March 2.

The film’s chief rival for the Best Animated Feature Oscar, Flow, also had a successful day, taking Best Feature — Independent and Best Writing, two races where it didn’t have to face The Wild Robot.

The DreamWorks Animation title was nominated 10 times, but two of those nods were in the same category.

Also Saturday night, The Wild Robot won the Producers Guild Award for outstanding producer of animated theatrical motion pictures. And Friday night, it won best animated feature at the Critics Choice Awards.

Other features that won multiple awards from the International Animated Film Society Asifa-Hollywood, which presents the prizes recognizing the year’s best in animation, include two-time winners Flow and Orion and the Dark, with the former winning best feature — independent and best writing — feature.

Flow, which won the Golden Globe for best animated motion picture, and The Wild Robot are both nominated for the Oscar for best animated feature, along with Inside Out 2, Memoir of a Snail and Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl.

Joe Dante's horror-comedy Gremlins is one of the 1980s' most seminal films. Can you believe it’s been 35 years since a Gremlins movie rampaged up on the big screen? That movie was of course Joe Dante’s bonkers 1990 sequel to the 1984 classic, with the franchise more recently returning to life with two seasons of an animated prequel series: “Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai” in 2022 and follow-up “Gremlins: The Wild Batch” last year.

But is the animated series setting the stage for a return of the Gremlins to live action? According to a new article from Deadline today that takes an expansive look at Warner Bros. Motion Picture Group’s near future plans, a new Gremlins movie may indeed be coming soon.

Deadline’s report details, “Franchise hopes abound down the road in Lord of the Rings The Hunt for Gollum, Practical Magic 2, DC’s Clayface and Supergirl, Drew Goddard’s incoming script for a new Matrix, a new Gremlins from Christopher Columbus and a Goonies treatment.

DreamWorks Animation leads the 2025 Annie Awards feature competition with 10 nominations, including for best feature, best FX and best character animation, it was announced on Friday.

The top feature category saw nominations also handed out by the International Animated Film Society Asifa-Hollywood to DreamWorks Animation’s Kung Fu Panda 4, Pixar Animation Studios’ Inside Out 2, Locksmith Animation and Netflix’s That Christmas, Tsuburaya Productions/Netflix’s Ultraman: Rising and Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl, from Aardman and Netflix.

Based on Peter Brown’s bestselling middle-grade novel, Wild Robot from director Chris Sanders centers on Roz (voiced by Lupita Nyong’o), a robot marooned on a jungle-y island, as she meets an assortment of colorful anthropomorphic animals. They include a wry mama opossum (Catherine O’Hara), a mischievous fox (Pedro Pascal) and a small orphaned goose, voiced by Kit Connor.

The Wild Robot continues to emerge as the animated feature to beat this season after leading the nominations for the 2025 Annie Awards.

The Universal Pictures film from DreamWorks Animation led the way with 10 nominations today, followed by Disney-Pixar’s record-breaking blockbuster Inside Out 2 and Netflix’s latest from Aardman, Wallace and Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl, with seven mentions apiece. All three films are up for Best Feature, joined by That Christmas, Kung Fu Panda 4, and Ultraman: Rising.

These awards are voted on by professional and patron members of Asifa-Hollywood who have two or more professional animation credits and contributed professional services over the last two years that contributed to animated projects. While this is a peer group award like the Oscars, but the Annie winners don’t always match the Motion Picture Academy’s.

Via Variety, the first nomination is for Voice Directing For an Animated Series, which will go up against Daniel Tiger's Neighborhood, Marvel's Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur, Monsters at Work, and Young Love. Next, the series is in the running for Music Direction and Composition for an Animated Program, running against Frog and Toad, Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai, Looney Tunes Cartoons, and Orion and the Dark.

The third nomination is Editing For a Preschool Animated Program, going against Frog and Toad, StoryBots: Answer Time, StoryBots: Super Silly Stories With Bo, and The Tiny Chef Show. Finally, the last nomination is for Sound Mixing and Sound Editing For a Preschool Animated Program against Baby Shark's Big Movie, Santiago of the Seas, Shape Island, and Xavier Riddle and the Secret Museum.

The nominees for the 52nd annual Saturn Awards have been announced, and Star Trek: Discovery and Star Trek: Lower Decks are the only two series in the franchise to nab a nomination. Discovery was nominated for its fifth and final season for Best Science Fiction Television Series while Lower Deck was also nominated for its fifth and final season for Best Animated Television series.

Discovery is up against 3 Body Problem, Ahsoka,The Ark, Dark Matter, and Fallout while Lower Decks faces stiff competition against Batman: Caped Crusader, Gremlins: The Wild Batch, Kaiju No. 8, Star Wars: The Bad Batch, and X-Men ’97. Lower Decks lost this award to The Bad Batch last year. Discovery was not nominated last year, and the award for Best Science Fiction Television Series went to Star Trek: Picard for its third and final season.

Taika Waititi and Charles Yu brings us a new reluctant hero in the new action comedy series Interior Chinatown. Hulu has just sent over the trailer, which features Jimmy O. Yang, Ronny Chieng, Chloe Bennet, Lisa Gilroy, Sullivan Jones, Archie Kao, and Diana Lin. The limited series is executive produced by Taika Waititi (who also directed the pilot) and Charles Yu (creator and showrunner). The series premieres with all ten episodes on November 19, 2024.

As the fall TV slate gets underway, Warner Bros. Television celebrated its lineup with some help from Fenty Beauty.

On Thursday, Quinta Brunson, Zachary Quinto, Michelle Monaghan, Arielle Kebbel, Whitney Cummings, Meredith Marks and more gathered at Nya Studios West in Los Angeles, California to promote the new programming schedule.

The celebration included the returning casts of Abbott Elementary, Shrinking, The Sex Lives of College Girls, Superman & Lois, Gremlins: The Wild Batch, Bookie and The Cleaning Lady, as well as The Real Housewives of NYC and Salt Lake City.

Last month, Peacock commissioned a straight-to-series order for a TV adaptation of The Burbs, the 1989 dark comedy that starred Tom Hanks and Carrie Fisher. Despite being a worthy film, it’s often eclipsed by other movies from the same era, not least because both Tom Hanks and director Joe Dante both scored bigger hits around the same time.

In fact, nobody seems to be more surprised about the news than Dante himself, with the Gremlins director telling The Hollywood Reporter that, “I think my actual comment was ‘how are they going to make a whole TV series out of that story?’ As opposed to ‘I want to be the one to do it.’”

Joe Dante is a bit surprised that his movie The ‘Burbs is getting the series-remake treatment.

Dante recently spoke to The Hollywood Reporter to promote the Max animated series Gremlins: The Wild Batch returning this week for its second season. Dante directed the 1984 feature Gremlins and its 1990 sequel, and he serves as consulting producer on the prequel show.

The filmmaker also helmed the 1989 dark comedy The ‘Burbs, which starred Tom Hanks, Bruce Dern and Carrie Fisher in the story of a family man who becomes convinced that his new neighbors are hiding a spooky secret. The movie received renewed attention with the news last month that Keke Palmer is set to star in a series version for Peacock from executive producers Brian Grazer and Seth MacFarlane.

Dante took to X (formerly Twitter) at the time of the series announcement with the message, “Call me maybe,” in response to a post about the news.

Gremlins: The Wild Batch, the animated Gremlins prequel, reveals its release window in an exciting new update. “Gremlins” director Joe Dante is spilling some secrets 40 years after the film’s release, including revealing the lengths to which studio Warner Bros. went to have one scene cut out.

Dante told Total Film that the 1984 film proved to be contentious amongst studio executives for one specific scene where Kate (Phoebe Cates) tells Billy (Zack Galligan) that she hates Christmas because her father died during the season. Well, WB execs “hated” that.

“[The scene] encapsulated the whole ethos of the picture,” Dante said. “There’s a duality of humor and horror but Warner Bros. just hated it.”

However, the sequence still stayed in the final edit in part due to producer Steven Spielberg siding with Dante. Even that endorsement didn’t stop the suits.

“I heard after it was out they were sending instructions to projectionists to see if they could cut it, which thankfully didn’t happen,” Dante said.

We all know the three rules of mogwai: don’t expose it to sunlight, don’t get it wet and don’t feed it after midnight. While that third point is up for debate as to its interpretation, one thing that isn’t is the desire for a third Gremlins movie – at least to its original star, Zach Galligan, who played Billy Peltzer in both the 1984 movie and its 1990 sequel, The New Batch. The Monster High series is just one piece of the larger "Monster High" franchise that has its origins in the line of fashion dolls from Mattel. A multimedia series, Monster High includes the eponymous toys, a web series, and several TV and film adaptations, including a live-action Monster High movie and the 2022 animated TV series, both for Nickelodeon.

The show, which has had one 29-episode season, features an ensemble cast that provides the voices of the sons and daughters of classic horror movie characters.

Channing Dungey first joined Warner Bros. TV Group as chairman in late 2020 — right in the middle of the Covid-19 pandemic, which made for an interesting first year on the job. Then came the Warner Media-Discovery merger in 2022, and the restructuring that came with it. In 2023, the Hollywood strikes disrupted the business again.

“It’s been a lot of tumult since I’ve been in the role,” Dungey recently reflected to Variety. “I’m hoping — and I’m knocking wood as I say this — that as we round the corner into 2024, we’re behind some of those bigger challenges. I’m sure there will be something new on the horizon, but I’m hopeful that 2024 marks a return to business as usual.”

The entertainment industry remains in flux, of course, with more disruption anticipated this year. But in her own corner of the biz, Dungey said she feels some truly positive momentum.

Winners of these categories will be announced during the week of Feb. 19. Remaining nominations in the motion picture, animated motion picture, television series/specials, limited or anthology series TV and streaming motion pictures will be announced on Jan. 12.
