In general, I found this film entertaining. Specially because of Elliott Gould's performance. His character is fun and cool, he mumbles comments all the time, lives in an untidy flat and is quite a nice guy in general, but relentless when it comes to do his job, find the truth and bring justice.
The first 10 minutes of movie are him going to buy food for his cat. You might think that's boring, but it's probably one of the funniest parts of the film.
If it wasn't for the main character, I'd have rated this movie lower.
I found the story convoluted and messy, with unnecessary characters jumping in and out in a clunky way, and a slightly confusing developments of events.. In the end, the twist was more like an "oh, ok" situation than something surprising.
In general, I felt it's more about a vibe kind of movie, but the "complexity" of the story and amount of characters played against the enjoyment of the film.
Some (not IMDB, though) call this Noir, or Neo Noir, I wouldn't do so. It has some elements but it's definitely not what you want to go in the mood of a Noir film.
By the way, the posted is quite false advertising, and be careful with the trailer if you haven't seen the film, since it can give away scenes from the ending.
Overall, it's a good film, but it left me with a sense of confusion about the story when there wasn't need for complexity.

It's quite extreme for me how this fil is.
I really like the art and animation, it's high quality and very enjoyable.
In the other hand the story and character writing is so bad and cringe that is hard to watch.
I honestly don't know how it has so many positive reviews.
The rape aspect is very unnecessary and quite cliché for any 80s and 90s Japanese anime, and I´ve started to get really tired f it, as I've been discovering quite a few old animes lately.
This one in particular feels unnecessarily perverted.
The main characters are as bland as they can get, in their design and their dialogue.
There's nothing else at all I could redeem from this film besides the quality of the animation, to the point that it was a drag to watch even with its very short run time.

I started this film not knowing anything about it, besides the main actor Tom Holland.
I was positively surprised and drawn into it instantly, by the haunting performance by the actor, narrating the film in some sort of Wes Anderson style, but in a darker, quite depressing manner.
The film is very well paced and stylish, the cinematography is quite special, with a few very interesting moments where I found myself shocked by the imagery, not by the violence or the beauty (only..) but by the particular style used to show certain characters, specially secondary or scene characters, I found those amazing and I haven't seen anything like this before in this genre of film, in terms of illumination (example, NO SPOILER, the bank clerk when he's claiming the overdraft bill).
The story is quite heavy and dark, the main character joins the army and after two years goes back home with PTSD and struggles to carry on with his life, and Holland does a GREAT job showing how much damage someone can take from such a traumatising situation.
The story and characters are very well written, all the performances are very believable, but it's Holland who elevates the experience to the point of moving the viewer (or at least me, and I can't say the story touches home closely, but it's the human factor that is well portrayed) making the movie a very strong experience.
Highly recommended even if the subject doesn't sound the most original or interesting, it's a very well done film with very interesting technical aspects in its style.
