The Warriors is weird. But it's like a good kind of weird... sort of. My mouth was agape as I tried to comprehend what I was watching, and yet I found this movie fascinating. It spends the majority of its time showing the characters traveling. In fact, I think the opening 20 minutes consists of dozens of gangs just riding trains and walking with very little dialogue. And while the acting is hokey and the story is very basic, I thought the costume designs for the various gangs was great. Honestly, I can't decide if The Warriors is annoying or artistic, so I'm just going to give it an average rating.
You know, I probably should have left this movie in the past. For little maniacs (a.k.a. Teenage boys), Weird Science may be amusing, but this creation's shortcomings are much more apparent when you're an adult. I don't feel like John Hughes really put much effort into the script or the directing. It's simplistic and choppy, spending way too long on some scenes and rushing through others. It also has a mainly juvenile sense of humor, which is unlike Hughes' other works of the time. Oingo Boingo's song, "Weird Science," may have stood the test of time, but the movie Weird Science definitely has not.
Fletch is peak Chevy Chase. He fits so well into this role of the smug, yet goofy investigative reporter. As a kid, I rewatched this movie again and again because of the funny parts. However, as an adult, I've come to appreciate the mystery and investigation angles of the plot along with the humor. I also appreciate the Utah references. This movie has a compelling story that I believe has helped it age better than many other comedies of the time. Plus, it's highly quotable and the soundtrack is a lot of fun. If you haven't seen this movie, you should, and you should charge the rental to Mr. Underhill.
