Just read this article online, and FIRST thing that strikes me, is what I term " maybe lack of understanding" on how to do business with the Federal Government....
the Reason I believe the numbers acre skewed towards Ottawa area companies come down to JUST two thing.
1. Brand recognition.....they have been around a long time, attending conferences etc creating awareness of the their organization, which in terms brings them to top of mind when contracting people are looking at who to invite to bid on things alike a ProServices opportunity...
2. Understanding what or how to actually build their brand and understanding that the ProServices list is really just a list of Prequalified vendors.....you need to do what you would do in the Private Sector...."Out Reach"...."Out Reach"....
How do you create awareness for you company.......Low Dollar Value business is the best way to build trust as well as creating awareness for your brand.....more of these you do, the more YOUR name is remembered when being invited to bid on business steams.....it also teaches the Indigenous entrepreneur about the who and how the department works....I firmly believe EVERY department has its OWN personality.....
Once people start to realize that the same rules apply in public sector as the private sector, that you need to do out reach......people buy from people, even if you are on a list.....
Its easier that people realize.....but maybe the issue that is created is one of lesser work or ease of success....its still competitive and on top of that its the MOST competitive space in the country.....
The saying that works in the private sector is the "KISS" formula and we need to convey that strategy....simple steps...
1. get on the SA/SO......
2. Find who to reach out to.....departments/contracting/procurement
3. start to engage via emails virtual meetings etc.......to simply get invite for Low Dollar opportunities......
Learn about the department, they learn about you.....and most of all
STAY IN TOUCH...
probably going to get walloped here on my opinions, but my business background numbers should stand for themselves.....and I think if we could have most Indigenous companies get half of those results, it would be really successful sharing of the business....
