Suzanne Somers revealed that she privately battled breast cancer for a second time three months before she died at 76. The Three’s Company star was first diagnosed with breast cancer in 2000.
“Suzanne Somers passed away peacefully at home in the early morning hours of October 15th. She survived an aggressive form of breast cancer for over 23 years,” Somers’ longtime publicist R. Couri Hay wrote in a statement posted to the late star’s Instagram.
“Suzanne was surrounded by her loving husband Alan, her son Bruce, and her immediate family,” the statement continued. “Her family was gathered to celebrate her 77th birthday on October 16th. Instead, they will celebrate her extraordinary life, and want to thank her millions of fans and followers who loved her dearly.”
In August, Somers posted an intimate snap with her husband to Instagram, sharing a health update with fans. “Since I have been taking time off from work, many of you have asked for more details about my health. As you know, I had breast cancer two decades ago, and every now and then it pops up again, and I continue to bat it down. I have used the best alternative and conventional treatments to combat it. This is not new territory for me. I know how to put on my battle gear and I’m a fighter.”
The star said that her husband had been a major support system through it all. “Alan has been by my side every step of the way. I can’t even explain how much he has done for me. If it’s even possible, we are even closer than ever,” she wrote. “My incredible family has been so supportive,” Somers continued, “and have helped so much by keeping the business running so you can still have access to all the wonderful products.” The business she’s likely referring to is that of Suzannesomers.com where she sells a variety of wellness products, including skincare and makeup.
Her family voiced their support in the comments, too. “Been betting on you my entire life! I love you Mom!” her son, Bruce, wrote. Her daughter, Caroline, commented: “You are the face of resilience! I will bet on you any day! I love you so much 💕💕💕”
Somers wrapped up the post with a message of love: “Thank you for the continued love and support. It’s only about who you love and who loves you—and I love you! ✨💛✨”
Following her cancer diagnosis, the A New Way to Age author tweaked her lifestyle. She told Prevention in 2020 that she “decided to eat as my life depended on it, I stopped eating all processed foods.” Somers said the doctors believed that her diet helped her live for as long as she did.
“My doctors said that if I didn’t lead a chemical-free life, supported by bio-identical hormones, I would not likely be here today,” she told Entertainment Tonight in a statement (Research on the benefits of a chemical-free diet is ongoing). “I am so grateful to all my fans for all the loving wishes. That means so much to me. God Bless America.”
Our hearts are with Somers’ friends and family during this difficult time.
