Hi-Pot Testing Procedure for Switches

The document provides a test procedure for high-potential testing of multi-bottle vacuum switches. It outlines the required equipment, including a high-potential test machine capable of 50kV or 36kV. It describes connecting the test leads to the upper and lower flanges of each vacuum bottle module and gradually increasing the voltage to 50kV or 36kV for one minute. If a module breaks down at a voltage below 36kV, it is considered defective, while properly functioning modules will hold the voltage.

A. Test Equipment Required: 1) AC High pot machine capable of 50 kV peak or 36 kV rms. 2) All recommended safety equipment per Hi-pot testing machine manufacturer. B. Test Setup: 1) Place the vacuum Interrupter in an open area with suitable electrical clearances. 2) Wipe the outside of all fiberglass tubes with denatured alcohol and a clean cloth. 3) Prop Interrupter arms in the open position using a 6 long block of wood per photograph 1. While opening the arms care must be taken to ensure that the arms are opened past the point where a click may be heard. This click occurs when the internal contacts spring into the open position.

6 Block of wood

Photograph 1 4) Verify that the contacts have opened by checking the continuity between the top and bottom aluminum flange of all Vacuum bottle modules to be tested. See photograph 2.

Test meter leads

Photograph 2 C. Test Procedure: 1) Starting from one end of the Vacuum Interrupter connect the high voltage test set lead to the upper flange of a module and the ground lead to the flange directly below. These are the same points checked for continuity earlier. 2) Gradually increase the voltage to 50 kV peak or 36 kV rms. 3) Hold at this voltage for one minute. 4) Vacuum bottle module should not Breakdown. 5) If module does not breakdown continue with the next module until all modules have been tested. D. Test Results: 1) A Defective Vacuum Interrupter will breakdown on one or more modules at a voltage well below 36 kV. 2) A properly functioning Vacuum Interrupter will hold Voltage on all modules.
