Working Towards Level 2a

The document outlines math targets for a student organized into 5 categories: solving problems, calculations, numbers and the number system, measures, and space and shape. For each category, it lists specific skills the student needs to achieve to reach level 2a, including being able to solve problems using addition, subtraction, and other strategies; knowing multiplication and division facts; using standard units of measurement; recognizing shapes and angles; and interpreting simple data presentations. The student's progress will be tracked with stars that are awarded as each target is achieved.

Date Achieved

I can use mathematical content from levels 1 and 2 to solve problems and investigate. I can move between different representations of a problem, e.g. a situation described in words, a diagram, etc. I can explain my methods and reasoning orally. I can use mental strategies to solve simple problems using counting, addition, subtraction, doubling and halving, explaining methods and reasoning orally.
Calculations

I know by heart all addition and subtraction facts for each number to at least 20. I can understand division as repeated subtraction or sharing equally and uses this to solve division problems. I can understand multiplication as repeated addition and use this to solve multiplication problems. I know by heart facts for the 2 and 10 multiplication tables.
Numbers and the number system.

I can count, read, write and order numbers accurately up to 100. I can shade one half or one quarter of a given shape including those divided into equal regions. I can begin to use halves and quarters. I know what each digit represents (including 0 as a place holder) with any 2 digit number. I can describe and extends simple number sequences (including odd/even numbers).
Measures

I am beginning to use standard units of measurement to measure and compare quantities and objects.

I know which measuring tools to use.

I can make and use a right angle checker.

I can tell the time using hours, half-hour and quarter-hour units.
Space and Shape

I can recognize right angles in 2D and 3D shapes. I can make whole turns, half turns and quarter turns. I can sort shapes and describe some of their features. I can sort 2-D and 3-D shapes according to a single criterion, e.g. shapes that are pentagons or shapes with a right angle. I can recognize shapes with no lines of symmetry. I can understand angle as a measurement of turn. I can understand right angles through movement, including using clockwise and anti-clockwise. I can instruct a programmable robot, combining straight-line movements and turns, to move along a defined path or reach a target destination.
Handling Data

I can interpret data presented in simple lists, tables, pictograms or block graphs. I can pose similar questions about data for others to answer. I can communicate my findings to others.
