A compound sentence has an independent clause joined by one or more dependent clauses connected with subordinators like because, since, after, although, when, despite, if, or since. A compound-complex sentence contains multiple independent clauses and at least one dependent clause connected by both conjunctions such as but, so, and as well as subordinators like who, because, or although.
