Hybrid and Advanced Rocket Engines

The document discusses different types of rocket engines including hybrid propellant, nuclear, electrical arc plasma, ion, and magnet plasma rocket engines. A hybrid propellant rocket engine combines solid fuel and liquid oxidizer stored separately, with combustion occurring automatically when they mix. Nuclear rocket engines use nuclear energy to heat liquid hydrogen propellant. Electrical arc plasma engines use an arc formed between an anode and cathode to ionize gases. Ion rocket engines vaporize and ionize fuel which is then accelerated by an electric field to produce thrust. Magnet plasma rocket engines similarly produce plasma gases but use a magnetic field to further accelerate the gases.

HYBRID PROPELLANT ROCKET ENGINE

It combines both the advantages of liquid and solid propellant rocket engines Solid fuel and liquid oxidizer is stored separately and used for combustion Combustion takes place automatically when the oxidizer mixes with the solid fuel

HYBRID PROPELLANT ROCKET ENGINE

Advantages

Speed regulation is possible In case of accidents, explosion is less Lighter in weight & high fuel density

Disadvantage Nozzle erosion cannot be avoided

Nuclear Rocket Engine

The nuclear energy is required to heat the working fluid to get higher temperature Liquid hydrogen is widely used as propellant and pumped to combustion chamber A small portion of the heated gas from CC passes to the turbine to operate the pump

Nuclear Rocket Engine

Electrical Rocket Engines- Arc plasma rocket Engine

Arc Plasma Rocket Engine

It consists of propellant tank, Combustion chamber, cooling system, Electrical power system Nozzle wall is cathode and electrode in the chamber serves as anode Arc is formed and gases are ionized Velocity produced is between 4000 to 19000 m/s and fuel is used as a coolant

Ion Rocket Engine

Ion Rocket Engine

It consists of propellant tank, Thrust chamber, Vaporizing chamber, Electrical power supply The fuel is vaporized and then Ionized The resultant ions are accelerated by electric field Due to the high velocity of ions coming out from one side thrust is produced on the other side

Magnet Plasma Rocket Engine

Magnet Plasma Rocket Engine

It consists of propellant tank, propellant pump, Arc chamber, Accelerator Plasma gases are produced similar to arc plasma engine In accelerator the plasma gases are accelerated using magnetic field and the velocity is increased and expanded
