STRESS ANALYSIS OF SILO HOPPER
by G. SANGAREESWARI U. GANESAN
ABSTRACT
Silo Hoppers are used in industry for protection and storage of powdered materials. Hoppers must be designed such that they are easy to load. More importantly, hoppers must be designed such that they are easy to unload. This project deals with the stress analysis of silo hopper for two carbon steel materials. The aim of the present project is to analyze the silo hopper with certain load conditions and to compare the results for two different materials. The load conditions are Weight of the structure (Self-weight), Filling load on bin and live load on platform and including Wind load.
DESIGN PROCEDURE
Assessment of Material Properties Assessment of Flow Characteristics
Functional Design of Bin
Determination of Pressures and Forces Structural Design
ASSESSMENT OF MATERIAL PROPERTIES
The properties include the density of the material, its compressibility, and its angle of internal friction, angle of repose and angle of wall friction.
For the majority of stored materials such as ores,
coal, grain, etc
Assessment of Flow Characteristics
Based on the material properties mentioned above, it is necessary to determine the flow characteristics Mass flow, Funnel flow and Expanded flow.
