Chinese Civil War

The Chinese Civil War from 1945-1949 resulted in Mao Zedong and the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) gaining control of mainland China, while Chiang Kai-shek and the Chinese Nationalist Party (KMT) retreated to Taiwan. Mao was able to gain widespread support from peasants in northern China through promises of land reform and communism, while Chiang was seen as ineffective and corrupt by many Chinese people. Despite receiving billions of dollars in aid from the United States, Chiang's Nationalist forces were defeated by 1949 as their public support waned. This led to the establishment of the People's Republic of China under Mao's rule and the Republic of China on Taiwan under Chiang.
