Overview of Wireless LAN Features

This document discusses wireless local area networks (WLANs). It notes that WLANs extend wired LANs by allowing connectivity without cables in places where wired networks cannot reach, such as historical buildings. WLANs offer reliability, easy and fast installation without needing to penetrate walls, mobility allowing access from anywhere, scalability to change configurations as needed, low implementation costs without wires, and reduced costs of ownership compared to wired LANs. WLANs see applications in offices, factories, homes, workgroup buildings, and public places. The document also lists five types of WLAN technologies.

CHAPTER 3 WIRELESS LAN ___

3.1 INTRODUCTION :
- Wireless local area n/w is a data n/w without wires
- It is also known as WLAN.
- WLAN is used in schools , college campuses, hospitas,in an oranizations,etc.. for many
reasons
- WLAN is not a replacement of wired LAN , but it is a extention of wired LAN.
- WLAN is very useful in a area where. Wired n/w is not possible to create / to established.
(like , historical buildings)

FEATURES: (NRI MS LR)
-NETWORK EXPANSIOINS :
- WLAN can be create where wired n/w is not possible to create.

-RELIABILITY :
- In WLAN failure ratio is lesser.

- INSTALATION SPEED AND SIMPLICITY :
- Here , installation is very easy and fast also.
-and we dont need to penatrate the wall (to provide connection)..

- MOBILITY :
- By using WLAN , People can get access with their applications from anywhere and
anytime (so here organizations productivity also will be increased.)

- SCALABILITY :
- Here , configuration / topology can be changed easily(as per requirements )

-LOW IMPLEMENTATION COST :
- Here, implementaion/creation cost will be reduced, because there is no wires in
WLAN.

-REDUCES COST OF OWNERSHIP :
-WLAN is very cheap than wired LAN.
- So if anyone want to invest in LAN technology, then this technology will
reduces the cost.

APPLICATIONS:
There are many applications of wireless n/w as below
i.) Office / Campuse Environment
ii.) Factory / Shop / Floor
iii.) Homes
iv.) Workgroup Buildings
v.) Public Places
vi.) War or Defence Sites
vii.) Heritage buildings

3.2 TYPES :
There are five types of WLAN .
i .) 802.11
-
ii.) Hyper Link

iii.) Home RF

iv.) Bluetooth

v. ) MANAT
