Voice Curriculum Final

This semester long voice class for high school students focuses on teaching proper singing technique and building performance skills. Students will learn to sing folk songs, musical theater songs, and art songs both individually and in groups. They will study music notation, sight singing, breathing, diction and other technical elements of singing. The goal is for students to gain confidence performing with accurate pitch, rhythm and expression through regular solo and ensemble performances. Evaluation will include vocal solo performances and written tests.

Course Description:
In Voice Class students will learn to sing using healthy vocal technique for the young adult voice. This is a
performance class and students will be expected to sing with others and alone for the instructor and the
class. There will be many classes taught in a master class fashion, where the student receives instruction
while the class listens and observes. The vocal literature studied will be comprised of traditional folk
songs, musical theater songs, jazz standards, and classical art songs. Video excerpts from musical theater
or opera may be studied. Music notation, diction, choral technique and sight-singing will be studied and
practiced.
Goal: Technical Skills
The instructor will:
1.

Monitor student sensitivity to singing in ensemble and alone.

2.

Introduce and encourage proper singing posture.

3.

Develop and refine tone and vowel production.

4.

Introduce melodic and rhythmic notation.

5.

Introduce the solfeggio system of music reading.

6.

Guide technical development for breathing and diction.

7.

Introduce and develop rehearsal, practice and performance skills.

8.

Introduce and guide vocal warm up routines.

9.

Introduce vocal ornamentation.

10. Guide ensemble work.

Sing and decifer melodies with solfeggio syllables.

Practice sufficiently to improve diction and breathing.

7.

Perform solo songs and in small ensembles.

8.

Sing melodies and rhythms accurately.

9.

Sight-read melodies that are at least four measures in length.

10. Sing songs and vocal exercises from memory.


11. Experiment with vocal ornamentation in ensemble and solo singing.
12. Sing a major scale with good intonation.
13. Independently vocalize to prepare for a performance.
