Evidence-Based Practice in OT Education

This document reflects on the author's experience with evidence-based practice throughout their occupational therapy program. They learned how to search for and interpret relevant research articles to apply to practice. For a class project, the author's group researched academic comprehension levels in different study environments and found home environments promoted the best learning, contrary to other research. Another project explored the effects of graduate school and marriage on quality of life for married students; most reported increased quality of life and motivation from spouse support. Completing these research projects improved the author's skills in evidence-based research and applying it to occupational therapy.

Final Evidence-based Practice Reflection

Evidence-based practice is a major theme demonstrated throughout the duration of the

program. Evidence-based practice is done by using current, proven evidence to guide practice.
The use of evidence-based practice increases knowledge of supported interventions and
treatments, improves the clients outcomes, and ensures accountability of the occupational
therapy profession. In practice it is paramount to remain current on the best practices and obtain
knowledge on upcoming treatment options. Throughout the program I have learned the meaning
of research and evidence-based practice especially related to occupational therapy practice. After
completing this program I have the ability to search and find relevant articles and to interrupt and
apply the research into my practice.
There were many opportunities for me to apply my skills in researching and interpreting
evidence based research. We completed a quantitative research project. My groups research
topic was a survey of academic comprehension levels in different environmental settings. We
decided to focus on this topic, since we were all new graduate students learning about our study
habits and what worked best for us in graduate school. There are copious amounts of research
done on the topic of comprehension and environmental stimuli to determine the efficiency and
efficacy in learning. Through our sample of thirty, first year occupational therapy students we
determined that the home environment promotes the best learning environment. This was eye
opening to my group because the current research stated that the home environment hinders the
ability to comprehend new information. This experience proved that even though the current
research presents one result, there are many different factors such as the person, context, and
experiences that must be taken into consideration when determining what research is relevant.

For the qualitative research paper, my group and I chose to research the effects of graduate
school and marriage on the quality of life of the married students in the cohort. We surveyed the
married students that cohabited with their partners and excluded the married students which did
not currently live with their spouse. The results of the qualitative study were intriguing in that
majority of the students that were married were top of the class. Majority of the students reported
an increase in quality of life and an increase in determination to be successful in school. They
stated their spouse was a great support system and they relied on them for the motivation to push
through and succeed not only for themselves but for their family. Many people would think that
having a wife or family as a graduate student would hinder your success and quality of life
through the program we found this to not be true at all. I learned through this assignment how
important it is to be invested and interested in the topic you are researching. This particular
research process kept me interested throughout, I enjoyed the interviews, data collection, data
analysis, and completing the report on this topic. Through the completion of the two research
studies we conducted I have come to know the hard work and dedication that goes into
producing evidence-based literature.
Also the requirement that we must provide evidence-based research on all projects and
intervention plans gave me many opportunities to improve upon my research skills. I have built
competency and confidence in my ability to obtain evidence based research and apply it to
occupational therapy practice. Evidence-based research will guide my future practice ensuring
my understanding, my abilities, and the treatment my clients receive.
