tex+ discussion
In the Week 2 Text Discussion Forum,
please answer both Question One and
Two, then answer two additional
questions from A-F.

1. In Chapter One, McLaren describes

the seven Jesuses he has known.
Which of these descriptions
resonates with you? Are there any
that you disagree with? How
would you describe the Jesus you
know now and how your view of
Jesus has changed throughout
your life?
2. McLaren argues that the “modern”
Church has twisted the proper,
Biblical view of Jesus as Son of
God, Lord, and Savior (ch 2-4).
Respond to McLaren’s criticisms
by sharing one example of where
you feel he “gets it,” and one
example of where you feel he
“misses it.” Be sure to state your
rationale for agreeing and
disagreeing with him.
A. How does McLaren view
Scripture? Does he value
Scripture? What claims does he
make in regards to Scripture that
make you uncomfortable?

B. Which chapter in the book did you

resonate with the most? Which
chapter did you struggle with the
most? Please tell us why.
C. Many presume that worship style
is the disctinctive element
between modern and postmodern
churches. What do you think
McLaren would say?

D. McLaren continually points to a

middle way (or considers himself
“post-everything”). Is there a point
where one needs to land on one
side of an issue or belief?
E. McLaren describes himself as
“green.” In what ways have you
seen the Church care for the
planet? Is this an important issue
for the Church?

F. Having read this book, what are

the important tenets one must
hold in order to truly have a
“generous orthodoxy.” Is this really
an oxymoron?
