THE LOCAL CASE OF PUBLIC
RELATIONS
DOMINOS PIZZA : CRISIS COMMUNICATION
Dominos Pizza was embroiled in a viral crisis situation when two
rogue employees posted videos of adulterated food on YouTube in
April 2009.
Public relations practitioners and other communication executives
are struggling to craft messages and maintain control of the flow of
messages within this dynamic landscape.
The only way to lessen the impact of a social media generated crises
like what Dominos experienced is to integrate social media into
crisis communication strategies and to create strategies for
monitoring social media dialogue.
THE INTERNATIONAL CASE OF PUBLIC
RELATIONS
DAVES DINER: CRISIS MANAGEMENT
Daves Diner, a regionally famous family-owned chain of full-service
restaurants is located in 13 Midwestern US states.
The first incidents involved two private parties at their flagship Daves
Diner in Des Moines. Reports of ill customers reached the restaurant as
local emergency rooms began taking in seriously and suddenly ill
patients of all kinds.
Media coverage seemed to be uncovering individuals with health issues
who ate at other stores in the chain in the past few days.
Situations involving public health and safety require dramatic,
comprehensive and conclusive responses, decisions and actions from the
very beginning.
PUBLIC RELATIONS ETHICS PROBLEM
Public relations practitioners have to strive to overcome the bad
reputations of twisting the truth to suit their clients' needs.
An ethical public relations communication offers more than mere
facts. In depth, it offers context for a story.
Facing an important ethical issue when advising company leaders.
These practitioners may have to muster a great deal of courage when
confronting leaders who are contemplating violating the company's
values.
Risk on four measures of ethical performance: misconduct, pressure
to compromise standards, reporting, and retaliation.
