PET Listening Guide

This document provides listening tips for the PET exam. It breaks down the exam into its four parts and provides 3 or fewer sentences of advice for each part: Part 1: Listen to the instructions and example first. Think about each question one at a time and listen to the whole recording before answering. Check your answer on the second listening. Part 2: Read the instructions and questions quickly first. Write your answer in pencil and move on if you're unsure. Listen twice and don't choose an answer just because you hear a word from it. Make sure answers match question numbers. Part 3: Read instructions and notes quickly first. Spelling must be exact if a word is spelled out. Write only one

PET Listening Tips

Part 1
Listen to the instructions and the example. They are there to help you.
The seven questions are all different in this Part. Think about them one at a
time.
Look at the pictures and think about what is different about them before you
hear the recording.
Think about the question and listen to the whole recording for each one
before you choose your answer. The speakers may talk about more than one
of the pictures but only one is the right answer for the question.
Mark in pencil the answer you think is right. Check it on the second
listening. Don't worry if you can't do one question, leave it and go on to the
next one.
Part 2
Use the time allowed to read the instructions and the questions quickly for an
idea of what you will hear.
Write your answer in pencil the first time. If you miss one, leave it and think
about the next one. Remember you hear the recording twice.
Don't decide too quickly. Some of the answers may be similar, and you may
hear something about more than one of them.
Don't choose an answer just because you hear a word from it on the recording.
When you tick the box make it clear so you are sure of your answers when you
write them on the answer sheet. Make sure you put the right answer with the
right question number.
Part 3
Read the instructions and the notes quickly for a general idea of what kind of
information is missing.
If a word is spelt out on the recording, your spelling must be correct.
The answer may be more than one word, but don't write more than one answer.
You will here the exact word you need for the answer, but the words or sentence
you hear around it may not be exactly the same as on the question paper.
If the answer is a number, you can write a word or a number. Be careful with
numbers like 13 and 30.
Part 4
Read the instructions and the questions quickly for an idea of who will be
talking about what.
Remember that you will hear the answers to the questions in order.
If you miss the answer to one question, leave it and think bout the next one, but
make sure you tick the box for the right question number. You can check your
answers and any you missed on the second listening.
Make sure you know who is speaking. There will always be one male and one
female speaker.
