Concrete Ingredient Testing Guidelines

The document outlines common tests to be conducted on ingredients and concrete mixtures used in construction projects. It lists various laboratory and field tests for cement, steel, coarse and fine aggregates, water, admixtures, and concrete. Acceptance criteria for concrete cube test results are also provided, stipulating that individual results cannot deviate more than 15% from the average, the mean strength must exceed design strength by at least 4 N/mm2, and no results can be below the design strength by more than 3 N/mm2. Sampling rates for concrete cube tests are given based on total daily concrete quantity.

Common Test to be conducted on ingredients of concrete

1. Cement: i) ii) iii) iv) 2. Steel: i) ii) iii) 3. 3.1 Steel should be from one of the 3 sources i.e. TISCO, SAIL, ISPAT Nigam. Manufactures certificate along with the bill. Laboratory test (physical) after every 25 T of consumption less than 10mm dia/ 40 T of consumption for more than 10 mm dia. Manufactures certificate along with the bill. Setting time Laboratory test after every 5000 bags of cement. Cement to be maximum 70 days old.

Coarse aggregate: Laboratory test is to be conducted primarily for approving the source. Following test to be conducted:Laboratory test: a) b) c) d) e) f) g) h) i) Impact test Abrasion test Sulphate content Chloride content Specific gravity Water absorption Sieve analysis Elongation Index Flakiness Index

Sand: Laboratory test Primarily for approval of sources. a) b) c) d) e) Sieve analysis Specific gravity Moisture content Silt content Chloride content

4.2

Filed test: a) Sieve analysis

b) c) 5.

Moisture content Silt content

Water: a) b) c) Sulphate content PH value Chloride content

6.

Admixures: a) b) c) d) Specific gravity Chloride content Total solid content PH value

7. 7.1

Concrete: Laboratory test: a) b) c) d) Permeability for every unit @ sets (2x3 cubes)/unit to be tested. Sulphate content Chloride content Cube test: Periodically for cross checking

7.2

Filed test: a) b) Compressive strength (Cube test) Slump test for workability.

Acceptance Criteria (to be confirmed):The cube test results will be analyzed with the following three important criteria. i) The test results of any sample i.e. the strength of any cube is not more than + 15% of the average. For example if the strength of three cubes of a sample is 28, 35, 42 then the average will be 35, but other 2 are more than 35 + 15% is not acceptable. The mean strength from any group of 4 consecutive test results i.e. 12 cubes is more than FCK + 4 N/mm square i.e. for M 35 concrete it should be more than 39 N/mm2. Any test result should not have strength less than FCK-3 i.e. 32 N/ mm2 for M 35 concrete. 5 Cum 15 Cum 30 Cum 50 Cum 6 Cubes 9 Cubes 12 Cubes 15 Cubes
