Spiritual Warfare
By Gary Millar and Scott Tunmer
Description
Junior Demon and his mentor Louie receive an assignment to tempt a Christian. Through this light and comical portrayal, the audience will gain insight into the kind of person that poses a threat to the kingdom of darkness. In the end we find out that what matters is not whether the earthly victim attends church, or what kind of job he has, but whether his life takes on the image of Jesus Christ. This script was inspired in part by The Screwtape Letters, by C. S. Lewis.
Purpose
To give an inside look at how the spiritual forces of wickedness might plot and scheme against us.
Additional Information
This sketch is a classic straight-man-and-funny-man set up. You could think of Bud Abbot playing the part of Louie and Lou Costello doing Junior Demon. We wrote this one to use as a kick-off to a sermon series on spiritual warfare and the armor of God.

Script
(Louie and Junior Demon are on stage when the lights come up. Louie is pacing back and forth, while Junior Demon is sitting at the table reading the Bible.) Jr. Demon: (Reading, but not very well.) For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. (Louie stops pacing and looks at Junior Demon with disgust.) Jr. Demon: Louie: Jr. Demon: (Continuing.) Hey! Louie! Thats us! Were in the Bible! (Disgusted, sarcastic.) What are you doing? Having your devotions again? A little late for that, isnt it? Naw, Im studyin. Im gonna get me a Christian. (He now points his finger at Louie for emphasis.) Know thine enemy! (Louie looks at Junior Demon angrily and then slowly turns his gaze to Junior Demons finger. Junior Demon gets the idea and pulls his finger back.) Louie: Jr. Demon: Louie: Shut up and check the box. (Takes a walk over to the box and looks inside. He sees nothing in the box and walks back toward Louie .) Still nothing. So Louie, I was thinkin (Slowly, emphasizing each word.) Shut up and check the box! (Junior Demon walks over to the box again and looks inside. He starts to walk back toward the front and then quickly looks into the box again, as if to trick the box into having something inside this time. Louie crosses his arms and looks cynically at Junior Demon.) Jr. Demon: Still nothing. So, Louie, I was thi -(Louie stares intently at Junior Demon, who becomes obviously intimidated as soon as he notices Louies sharp look.) Jr. Demon: So, um, uh, Im just gonna check the box. (Junior Demon assumes numerous positions around the box, waiting for something to arrive. He is then startled as an 8x10 envelope appears in the box. He walks back toward Louie as he tries to open the envelope, but he cant seem to figure out how to
get it opened. Louie has had enough and grabs the envelope from Junior Demons hand.) Louie: Give me that! (He opens the envelope and removes the first page, studying it. Junior Demon, a little hyperactive and somewhat annoying, is trying to look on, over Louies shoulder.) Jr. Demon: Louie: Jr. Demon: Louie: Jr. Demon: Louie: Jr. Demon: Louie: Jr. Demon: Louie: Jr. Demon: So Louie Whom do we get to tempt, lie to, torment, torture, harass, and otherwise ruin? His name is Janson. Frederick P. (Excited.) Youre all mine, Freddie! Ill chew you up and Ill spit you -- (Hesitates for a moment, slightly fearful.) You, uh, havent heard of him, have you Louie? No. (Excited again.) Good! Like I was sayin, Ill chew you up and Ill spi (Hesitates again, nervous again.) Are you, uh, sure you havent heard of him? Positive. (Continuing his thought. Excited once again.) Ill spit you out and Ill mash you into the ground! It seems our mister Janson is a used car salesman. Yesssss! (With a sinister smile.) Oh, it gets better: He also sells life insurance on the side and hes studying to become a lawyer! (Smiling, trying to contain his laughter.) Are you sure he isnt already here? (The two look at each other and snicker they figure a man with those credentials should be easy to get into hell.) Jr. Demon: (Laughing.) I mean, hes more qualified for this job than we are! (They both begin to laugh, Junior Demon laughing in a more animated, ridiculous way. Suddenly Louie becomes very serious as he continues to read. Junior Demon continues laughing for a moment and then realizes that something is up.) Jr. Demon: Louie: What? Whats wrong, Louie? It says here that hes a Christian. (They both shudder a mix of disdain and fear.) Jr. Demon: Louie: Well, uh, what kind of Christian is he? What are you talking about?
Jr. Demon:
I hope hes not the dangerous kind. (Junior Demon lifts his shirt and pant leg in order to show Louie his battle scars. He points to various spots.) You know the kind of Christian that gave me this scar Or this one. Or this one. (Glup.) This could be a tough assignment, Louie. Wait! It says here that hes a new Christian. (Relieved.) Thats not so bad. But it says he goes to church regularly. Church, smurch; lots of people go to church. But he actually listens. Oh. One of them. He also has a Bible. Bible, shmible. Lots of people have a Bible. But he actually reads it. So, lots of people read the Bible. No big deal! But he is actually doing what it says! Oh. (Pauses for a second.) Thats a big problem. Yes. It is. (Now they both pause for a moment in nervousness and concern.)
Louie: Jr. Demon: Louie: Jr. Demon: Louie: Jr. Demon: Louie: Jr. Demon: Louie: Jr. Demon: Louie: Jr. Demon: Louie:
Jr. Demon:
So, uh, does it say anything about, uh, weaknesses? (Both read further and begin to highlight areas of weakness. They have a sinister laugh as they scheme about how they might attack Mr. Janson.)
Louie: Jr. Demon: Louie: Jr. Demon:
Weaknesses Yes. Hmmm Ah, heres one. Oh yeah. Oooo, and what about this one? Oh, yes. Now that is a good one. Wait a minute. Whats this guy look like, anyway? (Louie reaches into the envelope and finds the photograph of Mr. Janson. He looks at it first with shock, then with concern and disgust.)
Jr. Demon:
What? Louie? Whats wrong?
Louie: Jr. Demon:
This is not going to be easy. Why? (Louie hands the picture to Junior Demon, who looks at the picture and screams in horror.)
Jr. Demon: Louie:
Youre right, Louie! This guy is ugly! Look again, you idiot! (Junior Demon studies the picture, trying to see what Louie is talking about. He nods his head yes thoughtfully at first, indicating that he understands. Then he shakes his head no and we see that he doesnt get it.)
Louie: Jr. Demon: Louie: Jr. Demon: Louie:
You fool! Hes already starting to look like Christ! You mean hes already changing? Then were doomed. Its too late! Its over, Louie! (Sits, exasperated.) (With an evil confidence.) That depends. On what, Louie? On whether hes ready for us. (Lights fade out.)
