Phase I: Immediate Relief
When the tsunami struck the Coramandel coast of India on the 26th of December 2004, Isha Foundation played an integral role in providing immediate relief to the victims.

Immediate Relief
Sadhguru Jaggi Vasudev, founder of Isha Foundation, made extended personal visits to affected areas and led a team of 2,500 dedicated volunteers with prior experience in social outreach programs. Immediate relief measures included:
Medical Relief: Eight Mobile
Health Clinics deployed from the Foundations Project Action for Rural Rejuvenation Program
Each clinic staffed by two qualified allopathic physicians and a paramedical support staff of four Provided vaccination and medical care to over 48,000 patients in the disaster area Dispensed medicines worth Rs. 1 million ($23,529)

Contingent on economic support and governmental permission, Isha Foundation is prepared to extend services to additional villages.

Situational Analysis
It is estimated that 20,000 houses need to be rebuilt in the coastal region of Tamil Nadu. Construction needs to be completed before the onset of the approaching monsoon to avoid a secondary disaster. Design required that is simple, easily replicable, & adaptable to local conditions. Highly cost-effective permanent housing solution needed.

Belonging to fishermen communities, the victims are unsuited to any other occupation. Without boats and fishing nets, the fishermen have no source of income. Severe shortage of boats in the market for replacement.
