Eagle Scout Project: Band Storage Shelves

Jason Laycock will build two adjustable shelves for the DeWitt High School Band storage room. The shelves will help organize the many instruments currently packed into the storage room and allow for more storage space. Jason met with the band director and principal, who approved the project. The project will involve building the shelves using wood, brackets and screws. Jason outlined safety procedures and created a schedule to complete the project with help from his father and troop members. The new shelves will benefit the band program by improving organization and space in their storage room.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION
Describe the project you plan to do.
I will build and install two shelves for storing instruments in the DeWitt High
School Band’s storage room. These shelves will be adjustable to be able to fit the
larger instruments.

What group will benefit from the project?

Name of religious institution, school, or community: DeWitt High School Band

program
Telephone No.: 517-668-3212
Street address: 13601 Panther Drive, DeWitt, MI

My project will be of benefit to the group because:

The storage room is packed with instruments and is very hard to get into or find a
place to put different instruments. Shelves will help organize the instruments and
will allow more space to be used for storage.

This concept was discussed with my unit leader on (Date):

PROJECT DETAILS
Plan your work by describing the present condition, the method, materials to be
used, project helpers, and a time schedule for carrying out the project. Describe
any safety hazards you might face, and explain how you will ensure the safety of
those carrying out the project.

If appropriate, include photographs of the area before you begin your project.
Providing before-and-after photographs of your project area can give a clear
example of your effort.

Description: The storage room is currently full of many things that take up a large
amount of floor space. There is one shelf which is not able to fit many of the
larger instruments. The shelves I will install will be able to adjust for the larger
instruments. It is difficult to get into the room and get things out because of the
many things in the room. Most of the instruments have been taken out of the
room and stored in the auditorium.
“Before” Photographs
There will be no top plates; the risers will be 8 feet with a permanent shelf
attached to the top. The rear risers will be attached to the wall with L brackets.

Materials: 2-by-4’s, pine boards, screws, nails, and L brackets. Specifics on

sketch.
Project helpers: Mike Laycock, scouts from troop 77

Safety: In this project we will be using several power tools. All power tools,
except for power drills which will be used only with adult supervision, will be used
by adults.

Schedule: Phase 1: I will obtain the necessary materials and tools. (Router, drill,
nail gun, circular saw, level, extension cords, and ladders.) I will arrange for
volunteers on the date selected for the construction
Phase 2: At residence we will cut footers and use router to cut slots for shelves in
2X4’s. Each 2X4 will be secured side by side and then numbered 1 through 16 in
the case of the short wall, and 1 through 20 on the long wall.
Then 2X4’s will be glued and screwed together in order of cut. (Phase 3) For
instance, #1 will be secured to and uncut 2X4, because it is an end piece.
Numbers 2 and 3 will be secured together, slots out, 4 and 5, and so on.
This assures that the slots will line up for the shelves.
Phase 3: At residence, we will glue and screw 2X4’s together back to back.
Phase 4: At school we will install footers using the nail gun. We will install rear
risers against the wall using L brackets (4 per riser offset 2 to a side) and
masonry screws. Rear risers will also be secured to footers using wood screws.
We will cut and install top shelve to rear risers using wood screws. (The front of
the shelves will be temporarily supported in the front.) We will install front risers,
level, screw to footer and top shelve. Install 2X4 supports to sides and in front of
risers.
Phase 5: At school, measure for shelves, cut and install.
