True Shape of The Section

1) Section planes are imaginary planes used to cut objects to show interior details. 2) The cutting plane or section plane is named by its trace in the front and top views. 3) The true shape of the section is seen when viewed perpendicular to the section plane. It shows the actual shape and size of the cut surface.

Projections of Sections of Solids (True shape of the section)

Section Plane : are generally perpendicular planes described by their traces. As per B.I.S. (SP: 46-2003) cutting
plane line is as follows.
The cutting plane or Section plane is named by its TRACE, i.e. as
VERTICAL TRACE (VT) in FRONT VIEW
HORIZONTAL TRACE (HT) IN TOP VIEW
TRUE SHAPE of the section is seen when viewed perpendicular to the section plane.
I. Section Plane Section planes are the imaginary planes which cut the objects completely or partially to show
their invisible and interior details clearly. These planes are represented by their traces.
2. Cut Surface Section or cut surface is the surface created due to cutting the object by section planes. It is
shown by hatching lines.
3. Hatching Lines Hatching lines are the continuous thin lines drawn at an angle of 45 to the reference planes.
parallel to each other at a uniform space of 2 to 3 mm in between.
4. Apparent Section The projection of the section on the principle plane to which the section plane is inclined
is known as apparent section.
5. True Shape of Section The projection of the section on a plane parallel to the section plane is known as true
shape of section. It shows actual shape and size of cut surface.

CONDITIONS:
1. Parallel to HP perpendicular to VP
2. Parallel to VP perpendicular to HP.
3. Perpendicular to both HP and V.P.
4. Parallel to HP, and inclined to V.P.
5. Parallel to V.P. and inclined to HP

Example: A square pyramid of 40mm base and axis 60mm is resting on the ground with the base edges equally
inclined to VP is cut by a section plane passing through the mid- point of axis and inclined to H.P by 45 and
perpendicular to VP. Draw the sectional top view and true shape of the section.
SOLUTION: (i) The projections of the pyramid is to be drawn and named. (ii) Draw the vertical trace VT passing
through the mid point of the axis and inclined at 45 to the ground or XY line. (iii) Name the points of
intersections of VT with the slant edges and also name them in the elevation.
Note: (a) Don't miss any point of intersection of the section plane. (b) Name the points in proper sequence by
using different letters other than the letters used already for projections. (If numbers were used already, then
use alphabets for section and vice versa.) (iv) Obtain the points of intersection in the other projection by
dropping projectors on to the respective edges. (v) Join all those points and draw hatching lines. (vi) True shape
can be obtained by using an auxiliary plane parallel to the section plane and project on to it. Name the points by
their capital letters indicating the true shape and then hatch it nicely.

Example2: A cylinder of 45 mm diameter and 60 mm long is resting on one of its bases on the HP. It is cut by a
section plane inclined at 60

with HP and passing through a point on the axis which is 15 mm from one of its
ends. Draw Its sectional view from above and sectional side view. Show also true shape of the section.
