QUESTION NO.

1 :
(a) Find the LCM of the following:
(i) 56, 63 (ii) 8, 56, 140 (iii) 35, 45, 55
S o lu t i o n :
(i) 56 = 2 × 2 × 2 × 7
63 = 3 × 3 × 7
= 7 ×8 × 9
= 504
(ii) 8 = 2 × 2 × 2
56 = 2 × 2 × 2 × 7
140 = 2 × 2 × 5 × 7
= 2 × 2 × 2 × 5 × 7
= 280
(iii) 35 = 5 × 7
45 = 5 × 3 × 3
55 = 5 × 7 × 9 × 11
= 3465
(b) Find the HCF of the following:
(i) 32, 48, 72 (ii) 54, 90, 240
S o lu t i o n :
(i) 32 = 2 × 2 × 2 × 2 × 2
48 = 2 × 2 × 2 × 2 × 3
72 = 2 × 2 × 2 × 3 × 3
= 2 × 2 × 2
= 8
(ii) 54 = 2 × 3 × 3 × 3
90 = 2 × 3 × 3 × 5
240 = 2 × 2 × 2 × 2
= 2 × 3
= 6

QUESTION NO. 2 :
(a) If h2 = − , find the value of x when y = 3,
h = −2, k = −2, k = −1 and g = 4. [3]
S o lu t i o n :
So, 32 = −
9 = −
9 = −
+9 =

=
−45 = 2x (409)
−45 = 818x
−45 = x
= 818
x = 0.05
(b) A ribbon is 14 m long. Fourteen pieces, each of length 25 cm, are cut from it.
The remaining piece is cut into equal lengths of 40 cm. How many pieces of
length 40 cm are there? What is the length of the piece that is left over?
[4]
S o lu t i o n :
Length of ribbon = 14 m
= 1400 cm
Length of 14 pieces = 14 × 25 26
= 350 cm 4 1050
Remaining length = 1400 − 350
= 1050 cm 0 −8
Pieces of length 40 cm each 25
= 1050 ÷ 40 −24
= 26 pieces
Length left over = 10 cm 10
QUESTION NO. 3 :
The numerals −2, −1, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 are written on eight separate cards,
with one number on each card.
(a) List the pairs of cards that have a sum of 4. [2]
S o lu t i o n :
6 , −2
5 , −1
3 , 1
(b) List the pairs of cards that have a product of 2. [2]
S o lu t i o n :
2 , 1
−2 , −1
(c) List the groups of three cards that have a sum
of 10.

1 , 4 , 5
2 , 3 , 5

QUESTION NO. 4 :
On a certain morning, the temperature in London was −14°C, the
temperature in Hong Kong was 8°C while the temperature is Singapore was
24°C.
(a) Find the difference in temperature between London and Singapore.
[1]
S o lu t i o n :
Temperature in London = −14°C
∴ Difference in temperature between London and Singapore is
= 24°C − (−14°C)
= 24°C + 14°C
= 38°C
(b) The temperature in Shanghai was mid-way between the temperature of
London and Hong Kong. Find the temperature of Shanghai on that morning.
[2]
S o lu t i o n :
Temperature in London
= −14°C
Temperature is Hong Kong
= 8°C
Therefore temperature is Shanghai
= =
= −3°C
QUESTION NO. 5 A:
Estimate the value of
(a)
S o lu t i o n :

≅ 40
(Correct to 1 significant figure)
(b) 56.96713 − 3423067
S o lu t i o n :
56.96713 − 3423067 ≅ 57 − 34
≅ 23
≅ 20
(Correct to 1 significant figure)
(c)
S o lu t i o n :

≅ 4
(Correct to 1 significant figure)

QUESTION NO. 5 B :
Use your calculator to evaluate
(a) 4(25 − 4π)
S o lu t i o n :
4(25 − 4π) = 4(25 − 4 × 3.14)
= 4(25 − 12.566)
= 4 × 12.434
= 49.735
(Correct to 3 decimal places)
(b)
S o lu t i o n :

(Correct to 3 decimal places)
(c) +
S o lu t i o n :

QUESTION NO. 6 :
of the passengers in an MRT train are men, of them are women and the
rest are children. If there are 72 women, find
(a) the total number of passengers in the train;
S o lu t i o n :
Let the total passenger are = x
No. of men = x
No. of women = x
So, Children = x − x − x
By given condition
x = 72
x =
x = 180
(b) how many more men than children there are in the train.
S o lu t i o n :
No. of men = × 20

No. of children = 180 − 72 − 80

= 180 − 152
= 28
Men more then children = 80 − 28
= 52

QUESTION NO. 7 A :
Write down the difference between 3y minutes and 25y seconds, giving
your answer in seconds.
S o lu t i o n :
Since 1 minute = 60 seconds
So 3y minutes = 3y × 60 seconds
= 180y seconds
Required difference = (180y − 25y) seconds
= 15y seconds

QUESTION NO. 7 B :
Cane sugar is sold at $2.88 for a 900 g pack or at $1.65 for a 500 g pack.
Which is more expensive and by how much per kilogram?
S o lu t i o n :
Price of 900 g = $2.88
Price of one g =
Price of 1000 g = × 10 =
= 3.20
Price of 500 g = $1.65
Price of 1000 g = 2 × 1.65
= $3.30
Second is more expensive
How much expensive = 3.30 − 3.20
= $0.10

= = 3
2 2 2
(c) a +b +d
S o lu t i o n :
a2 + b2 + d2 = 1 + 4 + 9 = 14
3 3 3
(d) a +b +d
S o lu t i o n :
a3 + b3 + d3 = (1)3 + (2)3 + (−3)3
= 1 + 8 + (−27)
= 9 − 27 = −18
