BUILDING NUMBER SENSE
PART ONE: Think About Number Sense
WHAT DO YOU KNOW ABOUT NUMBERS?
Each digit in a number has place value, such as ones, tens, and hundreds.
The value of a digit depends on its place in a number.
A number may be written in digits or in words.
Use number words like first, second, and sixth to show the position of
something in a row or line.
Look at the chart. Then answer the questions or follow the directions.

a. What number does the chart show? _____________
b. What digit is in the ones column? ____________
c. What digit is in the tens column? ____________
d. What digit is in the hundreds column? ____________
e. Write the number in words. ___________________________________
f. The number can also be shown as ____00 ____0 ____.
Write 3 things about the number 327.
You just reviewed information about place value and writing numbers.

WHAT MORE DO YOU KNOW ABOUT NUMBERS?
When you count, you tell what number comes before or after a number.
Look at each group of numbers. Write the number that comes before
or after a number.
a. 16, 17, ___, 19
b. ___, 30, 31, 32
c. 97, 98, 99, ___
d. ___, 110, 111, 112
You just reviewed the order of counting numbers.
Look at each row of items. Answer each question about the position of
the colored item in the row.
a.

In what place is the colored fish? _____________________________
b.
Start
In what place is the colored beach ball? _______________________
You just reviewed how to use a number word to tell the place of an item in a row.
Alone, write two problems using the number word fourth in
the first problem and the number word sixth in the second
problem. Write a question about each problem. When finished,
with a partner. give your problems to your partner to solve. You solve your
partners problems. Together, talk over the solutions.

PART TWO: Learn About Number Sense
Study the place-value chart that Theos teacher made. It shows
how many people visited the second-grade science fair.
As you study, think about the place value of each digit.

The chart shows the number 675.
The number 675 is written as six hundred seventy-five.
The number 675 has three digits.
The number 675 has 6 hundreds, 7 tens, and 5 ones.
The number 675 can be shown as 600 70 5.
Look at some other numbers and how they can be written.
The number 59 has 5 tens and 9 ones.
The number 280 can be shown as 200 80 0.
The number 364 is written as three hundred sixty-four.
You use number sense when you think about the place value
of each digit in a number.

PART THREE: Check Your Understanding
Remember: You use number sense when you think about
the place value of each digit in a number.
Each digit in a number has a place value, such as ones, tens,
or hundreds.
The value of a digit depends on its place in a number.
A number can be written in digits or in words.
Solve this problem. As you work,
ask yourself, What are the ways
that numbers can be written?
5. Theo attends Willow Middle
School. The lunchroom at the
school serves two hundred
ninety-six hot lunches to students
each day. What number shows
how many hot lunches are served
each day?
26
29
209
296
Solve another problem. As you
work, ask yourself, What does
the place of each digit in a number
tell me about its place value?
6. There are 579 students in the
Willow Middle School. What is
the place value of the 7 in the
number 579?
9 ones
7 ones
7 tens
7 hundreds

Read why each answer choice is correct or not correct.
5. Theo attends Willow Middle
School. The lunchroom at the
school serves two hundred
ninety-six hot lunches to students
each day. What number shows
how many hot lunches are served
each day?
26
This answer is not correct
because 26 is twenty-six.
29
This answer is not correct
because 29 is twenty-nine.
209
This answer is not correct
because 209 is two hundred
nine.
296
This answer is correct
because 296 is written
two hundred ninety-six.
6. There are 579 students in the
Willow Middle School. What is
the place value of the 7 in the
number 579?
9 ones
This answer is not correct
because 9 ones equals 9,
and the 9 in 579 is in the
ones place.
7 ones
This answer is not correct
because 7 ones equals 7,
and the 7 in 579 is in the
tens place.
7 tens
This answer is correct
because 7 tens equals 70,
and the 7 in 579 is in the
tens place.
7 hundreds
This answer is not correct
because 7 hundreds equals 700,
and the 7 in 579 is in the tens
place.

PART FOUR: Learn More About Number Sense
You use number sense when you count.
When you count, you tell what number comes before or after
another number.
To tell where something is in a row, line, list, or other group, use
the number words first, second, third, fourth, fifth, and so on.
To find the total number of items in two or more groups,
count each group alone, starting with the number 1. Then add
the groups together.
Theo counted the cars in his toy car collection. He used different
ways to count the cars. Do Numbers 7 through 10.

of a digit in a number.
A test question about number sense may ask you to know a number
in its different forms.
A test question about number sense may ask where something is
in a row, line, list, or other group.
A test question about number sense may ask for the total number
of items in two or more groups.
