Reconnaissance Report Sikkim Earthquake
The M6.9 earthquake hit Sikkim on 18th September 2011. The earthquake
caused widespread damage and destruction in Sikkim with about 100 deaths
reported in India with Sikkim bearing the maximum brunt of at least 60
deaths. A team of IIT Kanpur (Durgesh Rai, Goutam Mondal, Vaibhav Singhal,
Neha Parool and Tripti Pradhan) visited the earthquake-affected areas during
Sept 28 - Oct 6 and later briefed the local community and media about their
observations on performance of built-environment and lessons that can be
learned to mitigate the seismic risk in the region. Relevant NICEE publications
such as Earthquake Tips, Confined Masonry Construction, etc., were given
free of cost to officials and local populace at Sikkim. For further details please

From the Coordinator
The year 2011-2012 unfolded new
challenges for NICEE. During the
year we published the revised edition
of Confined Masonry A guidebook for
technicians and artisans by Ar. Tom
Schacher. A project has been initiated
to translate this monograph into local
vernaculars. The publication on
Seismic Isolation and Earthquake Tips
(English version) were reprinted.
Other regular activities like Inter
School Quiz on Earthquake Tips for
school children and workshops for
Architecture & Civil Engineering
students continued during the year. A
team from IIT Kanpur visited the
areas
devastated
by
Sikkim
Earthquake.
NICEE continued to
receive good support from its wellwishers during the year. This Annual
Report highlights some of our major
initiatives during this concluded year.
We welcome your suggestions and
