1st Semester, A.Y. 2010-2011
LONG EXAM 1
August 2, 2010, 5-7 PM
Instructions/Reminders:
1. No one will be allowed to leave the examination room for the entire duration of the exam.
2. Write your name, student number, and section on the upper right hand corner of every page. Do not write at the
back of your answer sheets. Use only black or blue pens for your solutions. Do not use correction fluid.
3. Cheating in any form will be penalized with a grade of 5.0 and possible expulsion.

4. Turn off cellphones and other communication devices.
5. Indicate units in all computations and write all of your assumptions.

#1. A 10-mm-diameter cable AC is made of steel
with E = 200 GPa and attached to a rigid bar BC.
Knowing that the maximum stress in the cable must
not exceed 190 MPa, and that elongation of the cable
must not exceed 8 mm, find the maximum load P
that can be applied as shown.

#2. A hollow rod (G = 80 GPa) is bent as shown in figure below to support a
homogeneous plate weighing 300 N. If the rod has an outer diameter of 50 mm, an
inner diameter of 40 mm and a linear mass density of 9 kg/m, determine:
a) the maximum shear stress due to torsion at a section through a. (70%)
b) the maximum angle-of-twist for segment AB of the rod. (Assume that
twisting deformation is independent of bending deformations). (30%)
Use g = 9.8 m/s2.

#3. A system of bars is attached to a spring
with spring constant k = 5000 kN/m. Bar B is
assumed to be rigid, and bars A & C are
deformable with properties given in the Table.
Determine the horizontal and vertical
components of the displacement of pin p
when the system is subjected to a 60o C
increase in temperature.
Hint: The magnitude of the restoring force of the
spring is kx, where x is the deformation.
