A wireline cutter is required when a slickline or

Down Hole Tools

stranded wireline must be cut in the well. The
Flopetrol wireline cutter is run down under its own
weight guided by the line and when it strikes the
stuck tool, it cuts the wire and wedges it into its
body. Subsequently the cutter will be retrieved
along with the cut wire.

When the cutter strikes the rope socket of the stuck

tool, the shock provided by the inertia of the hammer
causes a shear pin to shear and the knife then
rotates, cutting the wire. The rotation of the knife
also pushes up a tapered key, wedging the wire into
the cutters body.

The Flopetrol wireline cutter is supplied in two

models, one being designed for use with slicklines,
the other for use with stranded lines. Both models
can be supplied in two versions. The standard version
is the one normally used, but if there is any risk of
cutting the wireline at an interface, the interface
version using a go devil is preferred. The hammer
section of the standard cutter is used as the go
devil on the interface version.

The Flopetrol cable cutter has the following

no risk of accidental cutting at an interface

will not cut against the tubing

a clean cut by shearing is obtained even with

regular use over a long period, due to the special

knife shape

wire is cut short near to the rope socket: 1 inch

(25 mm) for the slickine model, 2 inches for the
standard line model

cutting force is provided by the cutters own

momentum rather than an outside energy supply

wire cutting and retrieval and cutter fishing are

carried out in one operation

The Flopetrol self releasing overshot is used to fish

wireline tools that have no fishing neck, as well as
damaged wireline tools and sucker rods that cannot
be fished with a magnet.

The tool is operated using normal wireline

techniques. The harder the operator pulls on the
overshot, the tighter becomes the grip of the slips
on the tool to be fished. Should it prove impossible
to free the jammed tool, a safety device permits
the overshot to be released by jarring down. Once
the overshot has been recovered, it is possible to
change the size of the line to obtain a stronger
jarring effect.

The Flopetrol self-releasing overshot has:

The Flopetrol self releasing spear is used to fish a

wireline tool with a damaged fishing neck, or a
cylindrical tool without any internal fishing neck. The
tool is operated using normal wireline techniques. 1
The harder the operator pulls on the spear, the tighter
the grip of the slips on the tool to be fished. Should
it prove impossible to free the jammed fish, a safety
device will permit the spear to be released by jarring
downward. Once the spear has been recovered to
surface, it is possible to change the size of the line
to obtain a stronger jarring effect.

The Flopetrol self releasing spear has:

Upstroke jars are used for jarring upwards during

wireline pulling operations. The advantage of using 1
an upstroke jar as compared to a hydraulic jar, is that
it is fully mechanical and has no seals, permitting its
use in gas wells.

The Flopetrol upstroke jar incorporates a ball locking

mechanism and a compression spring tensioning system. 2
The central shaft is abruptly unlocked when the
compression force of the spring is reached, so delivering
an upward jarring impact to the tool string.

Jarring is brought about by pulling steadily on the

wireline, without acceleration. When the wireline is
insufficiently elastic (for instance, at or near the 3
surface) a stretch simulator can be attached above
the upstoke jar and used to actuate it.
