Astronomical satellites are used to observe distant galaxies, stars, planets, and other objects in space. They orbit at altitudes of around 600 km and provide sharp images of celestial objects. Some key satellites include Hubble, Spitzer, and Chandra. Astronomical satellites are used to map stars, observe black holes and quasars, take photos to analyze changes over time, and forecast events through observation. For example, India's ASTROSAT satellite orbits at 650 km to help astronomers better understand the universe through multi-wavelength analysis similar to Hubble.

ASTRONOMICAL SATELLITE:

An eye placed in the sky

WHAT IS ASTRONOMICAL

SATELLITE?

Astronomical satellites are used to observe the

distant galaxies, stars, planets, natural satellites,

and other objects in the space. Astronomical

satellites are mainly used to find the new planets,

stars, and galaxies.

WHAT IS ASTRONOMICAL

SATELLITE?

These are used to monitor and image space. A

satellite such as the Hubble Space Telescope orbits

at an altitude of 600 km and provides very sharp

images of stars and distant galaxies. Other space

telescopes include Spitzer and Chandra.

APPLICATIONS
STAR They are used for observing
MAPPING the earth or any other star
and can, therefore, be used
for mapping the stars in the
cosmos.

They are used to study and

APPLICATIONS
Taking photos for comparison of size
TAKING and shapes before and after an
astronomical event and highlighting the

changes in the locations of the planets
ANALYSING and galaxies is one of the main
THEM objectives of using them.

The precise calculations on the basis of

FORECASTING exact locations of the planets can predict
THROUGH the cosmological events such as a comet
collision or meteors shower. These
OBSERVATION
predictions help us to be prepared for
any chain effects on the earth due to the
events in space.
EXAMPLE
ASTROSAT

INDIA'S FIRST ASTRONOMICAL

SATELLITE

From its low-Earth orbit altitude of

approximately 650 km, ASTROSATs mission is

to help astronomers develop a more detailed

understanding of the Universe. The satellite,

launched by the Indian Space Research

Organisation (ISRO), is a multi-wavelength

space observatory effectively designed to be

Indias answer to NASAs Hubble telescope.
