RCD Sample Problem

The engineer was asked to design a simply supported beam with dimensions of 358x205 mm exposed to weather. Using given information on reinforcement and material properties, the following was determined: 1) The effective depth was calculated to be 283.5 mm. 2) The depth of the compression block was found to be 166.609 mm and the neutral axis was 196.011 mm from the compression fiber. 3) Checking for under or over reinforcement, it was found to be under reinforced since the steel strain was less than the yield strain. Therefore, the actual depth of the compression block and location of the neutral axis needed to be recalculated.

Problem: An engineer was asked to design a singly reinforced rectangular beam.

He decided to use a 25
d=3585012
simply supported beam having a cross section of 358x205 mm being exposed to weather. He will be 2
using 3-25 mm rebar with shear reinforcement of 12 mm. Determine its ultimate moment capacity. Use
fc = 21 MPa, fy = 414 MPa d=283.5 mm

Given: 3. Find 1.

h = 358 mm area of tension reinforcement (As) = 3 25 mm fc = 21 MPa 0.05 '

If fc 28, then 1=0.85 ( f c 28)
7
b = 205 mm diameter of shear reinforcement (d t) = 12 mm fy = 414 MPa

diameter of flexure reinforcement (db) = 25 mm If fc < 28, then 1=0.85

Solution: see Therefore, 1=0.85

1. Sketch. Since the beam is exposed to weather, concrete cover (cc) would be equal to 50 mm. 4. Find the depth of compression block (a) and the location of neutral axis from compression
fiber (c).
