Jazz Piano Chord Essentials

The document shows shell voicings for major 7th, minor 7th, and dominant 7th chords using only the 3rd and 7th notes. It provides a shorthand way to play "comp" chords when another musician is playing the root by omitting the root and fifth and playing just the essential 3rd and 7th notes to differentiate the chord type.

7 3
Shorthand "comp" chords: play only the 3rd and 7th of seventh chords
when another accompanist plays the root (shown as white dot). Since all
major, minor and dominant chords have a root and a fifth in common, the third
and seventh are all that is needed to differentiate the chords tonal character.
They are the "essential tones."
