Temperature Distribution in Brake Discs

This chapter discusses the results and findings of simulations comparing the temperature distribution of ventilated and full disc brakes. The results show that ventilated disc brakes reach lower maximum temperatures than full disc brakes due to improved cooling from ventilation holes. Specifically, the maximum temperature of full disc brakes was 401.55°C while ventilated disc brakes reached a lower maximum of 345.44°C. The geometric design of discs, such as ventilation holes, is an important factor in improving the cooling process.

CHAPTER FOUR

RESULT AND DISCUSSION

4.1 INTRODUCTION

This chapter consists of result of the simulation. This result were taken from the

literature review from the research paper. The data obtained will be compared with the actual

simulation in the Final Year Project 2 and it will be my guideline in order to achieve the same

result. The studies is to determine the temperature distribution of ventilated disc brake and

full disc brake.

Figure 4.1: Temperature distribution of a full (a) and ventilated disc (b) of cast iron (FG 15).

4.3 DISCUSSION

Figure 4.1 shows the variation of the temperature vs. time during the total time simulation of

braking for a full disc and a ventilated disc. The highest temperatures are reached at the

contact surface of disc pads. The strong rise in temperature is due to the short duration of the

braking phase and to the speed of the physical phenomenon. It can be seen from temperature

distribution graph, the maximum temperature for the full disc brake is 401.55C while the

maximum temperature of the ventilated disc brake is 345.44C.

It can be concluded that the geometric design of the disc is an essential factor in the

improvement of the cooling process of the discs.
