Multiplying and Dividing Fractions

This document discusses multiplying fractions. It explains that fractions can be multiplied by multiplying the numerators and denominators, and the answer should be simplified if possible. It also covers cancelling fractions before multiplying, multiplying fractions with whole numbers by rewriting them as fractions with a denominator of 1, and that dividing by a fraction is the same as multiplying by its reciprocal. Exercises are provided to practice each concept.

Fraction (Part 3)

Multiplication

• Fractions do NOT need to have the same denominator to be multiplied together.
• To multiply fractions, simply multiply the numerators together, and then multiply the denominators together.
• Always check your answer to see if it can be simplified.
• For example:

Exercise:

Cancelling fractions before multiplying

• If possible, always cancel fractions first before multiplying.
• Cancelling can be done vertically or diagonally.
• Cancelling can NOT be done horizontally.

• For example:

Exercise:

• “of”, “lots of”, “product”, “times” all means multiply. For example:

Exercise:

Multiplying fraction with a whole number

• Rewrite the whole number as a fraction with a denominator of 1.
• For example:

Exercise:

Division

• The reciprocal of a fraction is the fraction flipping upside down, i.e. swapping the numerator and denominator.

• Dividing by a number is the same as multiplying by its reciprocal.

• Therefore, to divide by a fraction, you simply multiply by its reciprocal.
