WORD PROBLEMS:

1. How many gallons of a 20% antifreeze solution and a 10% antifreeze


solution must be mixed to obtain 40 gallons of a 16% antifreeze solution?

2. A bulk store has two types of mixed nuts: One is 60% peanuts, and the
other is 35% peanuts. How many pounds of each type should be mixed to
get 8 pounds of a mixture that is 50% peanuts?

3. How many liters of a mixture containing 80% alcohol should be added to 5


liters of a 20% solution to yield a 30% solution?

4. A chemical storeroom has a 90% acid solution and a 40% acid solution. How
many centiliters of the 90% solution should be added to 50 centiliters of the
40% solution to yield a 50% solution?

5. Shana invests some money in an account that earns 5% simple interest and
three times that amount in an account that earns 7% simple interest. If the
total interest is $390 at the end of one year, find the amount invested in
each account.
6. Fran invested $700 in two funds that pay 6% and 5.5% annual interest.
Fran’s combined annual interest is $40.50. How much of the $700 was
invested in each fund?

7. Aaron invests $9,700 in two different accounts. The first account paid 7%,
the second account paid 11% in interest. At the end of the first year he had
earned $863 in interest. How much was in each account?

8. Find the dimensions of a rectangle with a perimeter of 54 meters, if its


length is 3 meters less than twice its width.

9. A rectangle 24 meters long has the same area as a square that is 12 meters
on a side. What are the dimensions of the rectangle?

10. Find the perimeter of a triangle if one side is 16 feet, another side is
two-sevenths the perimeter, and the third side is one-third the perimeter.

11. There are 356 Grade 8 students at Euclid’s Middle School. Thirty-four
more than four times the number of girls is equal to half the number of
boys. How many boys are in Grade 8 at Euclid’s Middle School? How many
girls?

12. A piece of string is 112 inches long. Isabel wants to cut it into 2 pieces
so that one piece is three times as long as the other. How long is each
piece?
