Studio 8 / Writing Theory

Sammy Marks

Rhetorical Knowledge is key thing you need to know to be a good writer. Rhetorical knowledge
is when you connect with your audience in your writing and you write knowing who your
audience is. It is also to show a purpose and understand the purpose. Sometimes you need to
rewrite something multiple times and try writing for different audiences each time and go from
there.

“Did you know that CBD was legal? If you thought that CBD was illegal, then you are in
the same boat as many other people. In my survey, I asked 11 different people if they
knew that CBD was legal and over half of the people did not know that CBD was legal.
Many people in America think that CBD is a illegal drug that is bad for you and similar /
the same as marijuana.”

“ The vibe in prospector is very chill and relaxed. It is the perfect place to go hang out
with your friends and get a bite to eat. I will remember what restaurants are here for
future notice if I ever want something different than what I normally get. The food at
UNCC and prospector is way better than my high school cafeteria and so many more
options and places to eat.”

These are my two examples for Rhetorical Knowledge that I used in two of my writings.
The first example I used is part of my inquiry thesis. I am reaching out to my audience
and anybody reading it that doesnt know that CBD is legal. In the second example, I
used studio 2 because I am describing prospector and how it is a cool place and if
somebody reads this and haven’t tried it yet then they might give it a shot.

Critical reading is the process of understanding the text or the writing. It is when you go in depth
evaluating and identifying the writing. Trying to find the strengths and the weaknesses of a
piece. When you use critical reading you want to ask questions. Such as, who is the author,
what is the purpose of the writing, how does this relate to other sources.

“With Purdue owl you can find all kinds of helpful things. Learn and find guides to do
MLA and APA formatting and others. It can help you get or find a tutor. It helps people
learn English as a second language.”
“The article was very interesting and informative. I never thought about how punctuation
plays a role in body language in you writing. This article help me understand where to
put the comma when you use quotation marks also.”

In the first example I used is when we had to read and use purdue owl. I had not done
much looking into purdue owl but after we had to read and write about it I learned a lot
of useful pointers from reading purdue owl. The second example is from a TSIS
assignment and one involving grammar and punctuation. After reading that chapter, I
was able to learn more about punctuation that I didn’t know before when it came to
punctuation showing body language.

Knowledge of Conventions is basically the knowledge of the basic rules and guidelines
from readers and writers. When you are writing and editing your work, you use
conventions to help you understand what you are doing and what your ideas are. It
shapes readers and writers idea of correctness.

“In my survey, I asked 11 different people if they knew that CBD was legal and over half
of the people did not know that CBD was legal.”

“Iffland, Kerstin, and Franjo Grotenhermen. “An Update on Safety and Side
Effects of Cannabidiol: A Review of Clinical Data and Relevant Animal
Studies.” Cannabis and Cannabinoid Research, vol. 2, no. 1, 1 June
2017, pp. 139–154., doi:10.1089/can.2016.0034.”

““Coming into the CBD world with an open mind really helped me. Suffering from
chronic back pain from the military has been a struggle. Using CBD has help me
combat the pain and without the use of harsh chemicals.” - Angel Rodriguez. UWRT
1101-017 (2018).”

My first example is showing a hyperlink inside of my sentence and it follows the rules.
My second example is proper MLA citation format and is following the basic rules and
guidelines. My third example is a quote from my classmate and he put his citation in
proper form.

Composing Processes is the process that writers go through to be able to produce an
effective piece of writing. It is rituals or habits that writers do to be able to brainstorm
and work on a piece of writing. Methods can be different from everybody, some people
do better doing certain things. Having your writing peer reviewed is a good idea.

“The history of CBD or Cannabidiol goes back to the 1940s where it was first discovered. It was
discovered by a American chemist by the name of Roger Adams. He found a way to extract just the CBD
from the cannabis plant but he did not know what he extracted from the plant. Cannabis itself has been
around for thousands of years, dating back to almost 4000 years BCE, there is record of humans still
cultivating cannabis. It was not until the early 1530s when many scientists and physicians started to dig
deeper into the cannabis plant, then figured out and learned about the medical benefits cannabis has. In
the 1950s, scientists figured out how they could take the cannabidiol from the cannabis. Once the
scientists were able to extract cannabidiol from the cannabis plants, they were able to do further research
and studying of the CBD and scientifically prove that CBD was not a psychoactive component in the plant
itself. THC was the psychoactive component in the cannabis plant, which is why marijuana is illegal. Once
the study of the CBD was done and proven non-psychoactive, the legal battle began for CBD to be
legalized. America was unaware of CBD and what the medical effects were until there was a story
published about a girl named, Charlotte Figi, who suffered from a very rare seizure disorder. The story
that became public in America told the story of how she was treated and cured with a CBD treatment.
After all the battling in the legalization of CBD in America, the final outcome is that CBD is now legal
throughout all 50 states.”

“When CBD is consumed by a user and the CBD enters the body, it enters through the endocannabinoid
system or (ECS). The endocannabinoid system is found to be one of the most essential and important
regulatory systems that is in the human body. ECS does a lot for the human body and one major thing it
does is advance and regulate homeostasis throughout all the important systems in your body. What that
affects is a wide variety of things such as, sleep, appetite, pain, mood, memory, and it can mess with
reproduction. There is very little knowledge about the endocannabinoid system and that is why schools do
not teach much about this system in your body even though it is one of the most important systems in the
human body and animals bodies.”

“CBD does a variety of beneficial deeds to help treat ailments for humans and surprisingly animals as
well. A friend of mine, Garrett, has a english bulldog, his dog was suffering from cancer and there wasn’t
much the doctors could do, at least not in Garrett and his families price range. Garrett knew about the
benefits of CBD and started to give his dog different types of CBD. It showed major improvements to the
dogs health and wellbeing over time. CBD is the short version of the scientific name which is Cannabidiol.
Cannabidiol is found in the plant cannabis sativa and is only 1 of the 113 different cannabinoids that have
been identified. CBD is beneficial because of the range of possibilities that CBD can help fix and cure,
such as, anxiety, depression, internal/external pain and stress relief. It is also important to know the truth
about what CBD is and the benefits of CBD because many people believe it is illegal and similar to
marijuana so in their eyes, CBD is bad.”

These three paragraphs were all in my inquiry thesis. These are the final forms of the
paragraphs but during the rough draft these three paragraphs had the most errors that
needed to be corrected. The first paragraph was just very unorganized and needed to
be moved around a lot. The second paragraph was added after I was told I needed to
talk more about the ECS. The third paragraph had many grammar mistakes that needed
fixing and some other errors.

Critical Reflection is the process of thinking about what you have written and examining
your work and asking yourself questions. It is a way to reflect on the past and look at the
present. As well it helps us speculate about the future and act accordingly.

“I had 2 goals for this Inquiry Thesis, the first goal was to show and prove to you that CBD is not bad for
you and is not the same as weed. My second goal was to promote you and others to give CBD oil a try.
How did I do, will you give CBD a try yourself after reading this? Personally, I do CBD everyday because
of my social anxiety and depression and it has allowed me to expand from my personal bubble and go out
of my comfort zone in social interactions. CBD allows people who suffer from any kind of ailment,
disorder, or injury to heal naturally and efficiently. Any medications you are taking that are health related
can be replaced with just CBD. Stores all across the U.S. sell CBD and all the different types and forms of
CBD out there. Give CBD a chance because there is so much it can do for you with little to no side
effects.”

“As we walk into prospector you immediately smell the Chick-Fil-A and see the huge line there and the
noise is very loud from all of the conversations going on throughout the open building.
There were things to see all around me. There was a extremely long line at chick fil a. The US Open was
playing on tv, Stephens vs Azarenka. People sitting at tables by themselves eating or doing homework.
People sitting at tables with other people eating and socializing. The sound on the TV isn’t on but you
wouldn’t be able to hear it over the loud noise of all the conversations going on throughout all the people
in the cafeteria style building. The only thing I could feel while I was in there was the smooth wood table I
was typing my notes on. There are all kinds of smells in prospector. You can smell the Chick-Fil-A and
you can smell the hot dogs and you can sometimes smell the outdoors if you are near a door from people
opening the door and a breeze of air comes in. The vibe in prospector is very chill and relaxed. It is the
perfect place to go hang out with your friends and get a bite to eat. I will remember what restaurants are
here for future notice if I ever want something different than what I normally get. The food at UNCC and
prospector is way better than my high school cafeteria and so many more options and places to eat. As
well as the regular cafeteria on campus has way better food and options than my high school food. It is
very busy and the lines are very long at the restaurants. I’m not used to living so close to places like these
and being able to walk there in 3 minutes. People are always coming in and leaving and tables are
constantly being used and left.”

The first paragraph is my conclusion from my thesis. The reason I used this as my
example is because for the conclusion paragraph, I simply reflected everything I had
talked about during the essay. The second paragraph is from the essay about
prospectors. The whole assignment was going into prospector and reflecting on
everything I saw and heard and smelt. That assignment was all about looking close to
detail and reflect on the things around you.
