Dynamics Lesson

Grade Level: 2 Subject: Music

Lesson Aim/Objective: Students will be able to identify and define


Italian dynamics

Materials:
White board
Hall of the Mountain King music
Walking Song music

Common Core Standards:


2.5.2 Demonstrating expressive qualities in music, including dynamics

Instruction/Procedure:

- Whisper to the students “I want you to raise your hand if you


think I am speaking loudly. Raise your hand if you think I am
singing softly”
- “Today we will be learning about Dynamics” (say dynamics in
different dynamics)
- Introduce p and f with loud and soft
- Say Eleanor at loud and soft
- Ask if anyone knows what we call really loud and really soft.
- Can we use dynamics while we are singing? Yes.
- Let’s try singing Apple Tree using dynamics.
- Does anyone know what language dynamics are in?
- Introduce mezzo forte/piano
- Listening example
- Play Lucy Lockett
- Listen to Hall of the Mountain King and Walking Song and use the
room as a dynamic scale.
Assessment Activity:
Students will be aurally assessed throughout the lesson, using methods
like raising hands for conformation of understanding, and during the
listening activity, making notes of those students who are actually not
comprehending the activity.
