Characters:
Scarlet Eve Gordon- 32 year old robot that was created by Frank Gordon.
She is very inquisitive like a child, and she doesn’t know emotions and how
they work.
Frank Gordon-71 year old scientist that’s been working on Scarlet for many
years. He’s a very dedicated person and doesn’t let anyone change his
beliefs.
Connor Thomas- 35 year old journalist that works as hard as he an to
become famous. He is well known the state, and wants to write the best
stories.
Emily Johnson- 45 year old barista that becomes Scarlet’s best friend. She’s
a very sassy and fun loving mom.

Chris Johnson- This is Emily’s loving and enjoyable husband. He takes care
of the chores and works during the day.
Bill Moore-Frank’s closest friend, he is a sucker for his friends. He considers
friends to be his family.
Dr. Giuseppe-Frank’s doctor. He’s a tough man due to his job, but he is
extremely empathetic to those around him.
Mr. Cave -Connor’s boss, he’s a very demanding yet respectable man. He
believes that seniority is one of the most important things in life.
Priest- The speaker of Frank’s funeral, a very kind and open man. He’s never
to praise the lord at any moment.
Dave Smith -Scarlet and Emily’s Coworker. He is a very young man, 23, and
is very shut off and tends not to listen to others unless it’s very important.

Scene 1

(The curtains open to the stage set as FRANK’s [Link] is a table in the
middle of the stage, with SCARLET laying on top of it, not moving. There is
another table stage right, with multiple tools laying on top of it. Lighting is a
light blue, with flashes every now and again to represent sparks coming from
SCARLET. FRANK is using his tools to put the finishing touches on to
SCARLET.)

FRANK
Scarlet..I’m finally finished with you. (Pushes her lower arm)

FRANK
Call me whatever you would like dear

Now, let’s make sure all your chips and features are working. (holding
emotion chip) Oh! I almost forgot. Here Scarlet. (puts in) There we go! Now..tell
me how you feel.

SCARLET
I feel..happy!

FRANK
Good. I see the chip is working. Now...speaker mode!

(SCARLET opens her mouth and a loud song starts playing out of it)

FRANK
(laughing) Alright..thank you Scarlet. Go through your other features for me
please.

SCARLET
(more robotic than before) I have many useful jobs. I can cook, clean, take
care of people and pets, navigate, make phone calls, and more. If you would
prefer, I can even be your best friend! I can be whatever you wish me to be.

FRANK
Perfect. Just how I programmed you. I think I should show you around the
house, maybe that way you can get accustomed to being around here.

SCARLET
Around this house? (pause) Searching house on the we-

FRANK
It’s a place where we eat sleep and drink. We live in them and have fun. Ok?

Scarlet
Okay. I think I understand then. Isn’t this my home though?

FRANK

It’s part of it. Home is different you see. Home isn’t necessarily a building or a
place. You’ll see..it can be a person..a robot...whatever you need it to be
Scarlet. Now follow me up these stairs please.

(Set changes. They are in the living/dining room area. Lighting is bright and
yellow. Scarlet is expressing aw.)

SCARLET
This is...fire?

FRANK
Yep. This is our fireplace. Can you feel it?

SCARLET
(puts hands near it) It feels like something…

FRANK
That’s a start at least.

SCARLET
What else is there..other than in our “house”?

FRANK
There’s much more. We should get you out into the world. I want you to learn
and live just like us. You’re going to be very useful on collecting data for the
greater good. Either that..or just to help someone else be just as happy. Come
with me dear. We’re gonna take a walk.

(FRANK grabs Scarlet’s arm and lifts helps her off the table.
He walks her out of the lab.)

Scene 2
(Set changes to the bar. A larger wall full of
Alcohol is behind the bar. A woman is
working and many people are drinking.
It reeks of alcohol and food in the building.)

BILL
How do you do ma’am? (Shakes hand)

SCARLET
I’m good sir. How are you?

Bill
Lovely, thank you for asking.

FRANK
Scarlet, this is your new boss. You’ll be working with Emily. (points)

SCARLET
Working? How do I perform this task?

FRANK
Well..it’s a way us people use our skills..or something else..to get money to
live.

SCARLET
Do you eat money?

BILL
(laughing) She’s a funny one you’ve got there.

FRANK
Indeed. (at SCARLET) Scarlet, you don’t eat it. It’s currency. We use it to get
things we eat and need to survive.

SCARLET
Oh! That makes sense! What am I going to do though?

BILL
You’ll be making drinks.

SCARLET
What kind of drinks?

BILL
(small laugh) Alcoholic ones. Jeez Frank, did you make sure she was just as
curious as a child?

FRANK
Hey, she’s gotta learn somehow.

SCARLET
When do I start sir?

BILL
You’ll begin working later tonight. You can go talk to Emily, she’ll show you the
in and outs of this job. She’s our best worker here.

FRANK
(to the side) Thanks Bill, you’re a real help for taking her. This is the best place
for her to start out with collecting data.

BILL
Of course. You know how these drunkies are. Awful people, but hey, it’s great
business. Are you sure you’re ready for this though Frank?

FRANK
The publicity won’t be that bad. I’ve dealt with publicity before. I’m just worried
someone might try to destroy her.

BILL
Maybe install some self defence mechanics?

FRANK
(laughs) Yeah, maybe.

(Lights focus on the other side of the stage where Emily and Scarlet are.)

SCARLET
Hello, you’re Emily yes?

EMILY

Oh-I’m sorry I-

I’m pullin’ your leg kid. I didn’t expect for you to get that flustered.(pause)
Scarlet, right?

SCARLET
Yes ma’am. I’m supposed to learn some things from you?

EMILY
I can show you the ins and outs of this place, are you ready though? It’s a lot
of work. Not the drink mixing part. That’s easy.

SCARLET
What do you mean?

EMILY
You gotta hear the emotional baggage along with all of it kid.

SCARLET
Oh. That is no problem for me. How do I respond though?

EMILY
Listen here..

SCARLET

EMILY
Alright! I like your enthusiasm. Now, get behind the counter. Let me show you
how to make some of the commonly ordered drinks. Pay attention.

(Begins to grab all of the ingredients to a certain drink)

Obviously, you can see the stack of beers under the bar. We have the tap
here if they want the bar’s homemade beer. There are several brands of
beer bottles under here if they have a particular taste. Alright, so this how
you make a margarita. First you add two ounces of tequila into the shaker.
Then you add one ounce of triple sec to it. Three ounces of FRESH sour mix
and some ice, and shake!

SCARLET
What speed should I shake the drink at?

EMILY
Whatever NORMAL speed you want hun.

SCARLET
Okay…*shakes at a very fast speed*

EMILY
I said normal! Anyway, then you pour it in into the cup, add a little lime slice,
and there you go!

SCARLET

Your family. How old you are. What’s life like for you?

EMILY
Well kid..it’s busy.

SCARLET

EMILY
Well I have my 3 kids. They’re all youngins.

EMILY
Yup. Lil old chumps. Love them to death though.

SCARLET
What’s a husband?

EMILY
(laughs) Well..that depends. You want a technical definition? A man that you
are by law recognized as partners for life. In my terms? He’s an extra kid to
take care of.

SCARLET
If he’s hard to take care of, why keep him?

EMILY
Well. Simply put, I love him.

SCARLET
….Love him?

EMILY
If I had to restart my whole life right now, I’d still want him by my side with me.
He might be tough to handle, but I would give anything to keep him in my life.

SCARLET
What makes him so desirable? Is it his outer appearance?

EMILY
Don’t get me wrong, he has a pretty face and a very...pretty..body too. (looks
out into distance out of focus, and snaps back into it.) Anyway, that pretty bo-
face doesn’t mean everything. His personality is great. No matter how mad I
can get, he will always calm me down. He’ll always find a way to make me
smile through it all. His laugh..the way his eyes flicker when he’s having fun..it
makes it worth it. He’s the love of my life. I’m so glad I’ve had the opportunity to
live my life with him and share every part of me with him with no worry.

SCARLET

SCARLET
Sorry, just fine.

FRANK
Scarlet, we need to go now. I have to take my medicine.

EMILY
Oh jeez, I got you distracted from learning about the drinks. When you come in
for your first shift I’ll teach you everything else you need to know okay?

SCARLET
Okay! I’ll see you later!

EMILY
Heh, she reminds me of my own kids.

FRANK
Scarlet!

SCARLET
I’m coming!

Scene 3
(Scarlet and FRANK are walking back to their house. The outside of the
house is set stage right.)

FRANK
Scarlet, I want you to be careful out there. There are so many things that
could go wrong. People may accept you. They may want to befriend you out
of curiosity. There are people who will want to hurt you though. People will
want to make you do things you wouldn’t ever want to search for. Why?
People can’t control themselves. They consider themselves to be more
important than others, even if they don’t understand anything about it. Just be
careful. I don’t want them to take advantage and use you as a slave. You are
not a slave. You are just as humane as us.

SCARLET

(long pause) I will do my best to keep myself safe.

FRANK
Thank you.

(They walk through the door and the set changes. The floors begin spinning,
moving them, and then people move on furniture. The exchange takes place
within a minute or less.)

FRANK
Ah, this house.

SCARLET
What about it Father?

FRANK
It just never gets old seeing this place. I grew up here you know.

SCARLET
What was it like here when you were a child?

FRANK
Life..was very different. My parents weren’t around a whole bunch when I
was a kid. That’s whenever I discovered my passion for science..for building.

SCARLET
When did you know that science was your passion though?

FRANK
It was 2019, many years ago at this point. Ha. I was just a boy at that point. No
older than 12. I was at a science fair, when I saw all the chemical reactions in
projects. I saw the technology advancing before my eyes. I knew I wanted to
do more from them on.

SCARLET
When..did you decide to make me?

FRANK
Scarlet..I...ever since I lost them.

Them..?

FRANK
That’s...not a subject for now.

SCARLET
Oh..I understand..

( A long silent pause, complete stillness )

FRANK
Scarlet, what time is it now?

SCARLET
It is approximately 3:45 p.m.

FRANK
Alright, thank you. (pause) (looks at phone)

(FRANK picks up his phone and listens to the message left on it. He throws his
hand over his mouth in horror. He grabs all of his belongings once more and
runs out the door, leaving his phone.)

SCARLET
Where are you going? (grabs phone and holds it to ear) Oh no…

(Loud audio of a voice talking about FRANK needing to come in to hear his
results. They mention he was tested for cancer. In a more robotic tone)
Searching route to, Dr. Giuseppe's office. Begin route, by going straight. (She
begins running around the stage frantically, the scene changes behind her.)

Scene 4
(FRANK is sitting in the office, shaking his leg with anxiety. Scarlet comes
rushing in and she sits down next to FRANK.)

SCARLET
Why didn’t you tell me father?

FRANK
I’m sorry. I didn’t want to tell you. Your emotion chip is new..I didn’t want to
override it. You should go back home Scarlet.

SCARLET
This isn’t something you can hide from me! Just because I’m new doesn’t
mean it doesn’t affect me..

FRANK
I’m sorry Scarlet

SCARLET
I’m staying by your side. You are my owner. I should be there for you.

FRANK
Alright..if you must.

SCARLET
What..what if you do…

FRANK
Let’s not thin-

SCARLET
What if..you leave too...like they left you.

FRANK
(visible hurt on his face) Scarlet..no. I won’t leave you no matter what. I
promise I’ll stay.

SCARLET
How did they leave? Who were they?

FRANK
(sigh) My wife and my daughter.

Your family..?

FRANK
My daughter..she died in a car crash. For a while..my wife was numb from the
pain. She didn’t do anything. The numb wore off though. She wanted to feel
less. She began drinking, all the time. Feeding into her urge to escape the pain.

SCARLET
What happened to her?

FRANK
Her body gave away.

(A long pause)

SCARLET
What do you mean by that?

FRANK
She became so obsessed. She didn’t talk to me unless I wasn’t getting her
alcohol. Her liver completely stopped working from the amount of liquor she
was taking in.

SCARLET
I’m...sorry.

FRANK
Don’t be. What happened in the past is the past. I have you here with me now.

SCARLET
Thank you.

FRANK
No, thank you Scarlet.

(Enter Dr. Giuseppe from stage left)

DR. GIUSEPPE

(Change set, now a doctor’s office room, FRANK sits on the bed, Scarlet
beside him.)

DR. GIUSEPPE
Good afternoon Frank. I’m sorry to call you in on such a short notice.

FRANK
Dr. Giuseppe..please tell me...do I?

Dr. GIUSEPPE
Frank..I’m sorry. I don’t know how to tell you this. You...have cancer. Stage 3
lung cancer. I’m not sure how much time you have left to live.

FRANK
Oh my god…

(Long pause.)

SCARLET
It’s happening..isn’t it? You’re going to leave? (crying)

FRANK
Your emotion chip...I’m sorry. Doctor, (wiping away Scarlet’s tears) I promise I
won’t leave you. What do I do?

DR. GIUSEPPE
Well..you’re in your later stages sir. There isn’t a very high chance of
survival.

FRANK
So there’s nothing I can do?

DR. GIUSEPPE
We’ll get a surgery planned out as soon as possible. As soon as the tumor is
removed, we’ll start chemo. That’s the best chance of getting a full recovery.

FRANK

DR. GIUSEPPE
Like I said..you’re in the later stages sir. We’ll do our best, but we can’t

SCARLET
Will that hurt him?

DR. GIUSEPPE
Not at all. It’ll make him better. (turning to FRANK) We’ll get you on the table as
soon as we can. I’m sorry.

SCARLET
Father?

FRANK
Alright. Scarlet..come visit me whenever you come off of work each night. I
want to do this..for you. I need to be here for you.

SCARLET
You won’t leave?

FRANK
I’ll try my best to stay..for you Scarlet.

SCARLET
(crying) Thank you dad.

DR. GIUSEPPE
Scarlet, please leave the office now. We are going to send your father to the
hospital now. If you would like to see him, you will need to go to his room.

SCARLET
Oh..alright. Thank you..sir.

to stop it? I’m all these fancy parts yet here I am..worthless. Nothing to help
out my own father..why....
