Rafter Design: C150x75x9x12.5 Analysis

This document summarizes the design of roof rafters, including: 1) There are 14 internal stiffeners used in a C150x75x9x12.5 section with an area of 3000 mm^2 and moment of inertia of 1.0E+07 mm^4. 2) The span of each stiffener is 3.37 m and the total weight is 24 kg/m. 3) The maximum bending moment Mmax is calculated to be 3.31 kN-m at a distance of 1.82 m from the compression ring. 4) The induced bending and compression stresses are calculated and found to satisfy the allowable stress requirements.

Design of Roof Rafters

Number of internal stiffeners N = 14

Section used = C150x75x9x12.5
Corroded properties of Rafter
h = 150 mm
bf = 75 mm
tf = 12.5 mm
tw = 9 mm
Area = 3000 mm2
I = 1.0E+07 mm4
Span of stiffener, Ls = 3.37 m = 132.51 inch
Wt = 24 Kg/m (Wt of corroded section)
Total area of Section A = 3000 mm2
Location od centroid from top yc = 75.00 mm
Total moment of inertia I = 10351562.5 mm4
Section modulus Z = I/yc = 138020.83 mm3 = 8.42 in

From fig - 2, the moment at distance x from compression ring is obtained as follows.
Mx = Ha hx -Wa X-go/2 X2 - gx/6 X2
where,
hx = h X and gx = g3 X
R1 R1
hx = 0.20678 X gx = 0.8660 X
Ha = 18.88 KN
Wa = 0.75 KN
Na=Ha/Cosq = 19.14 KN

Mx = 3.15 X - 0.470 X2 - 0.1443 X3

Therefore Mx = d 3.15 X - 0.941 X2 - 0.433 X3

dx
2
d = 3.15 - 0.941 X - 0.433 X = 0 for M=M max
dx
Solving above quadratic equation.
a= 0.433
b= 0.941
c= -3.153
X= 1.82 m and -4.0 m 10.902

M max = 3.31 KN-m = 29266.7 lbs-inch

Allowable Stresses
a) Bending stress shall be
Bending stress shall be greater of the Following
= 19997.09 psi
Fb=20000-0.571*(l/r)2
= 22283.15 psi
Fb=12000000Af/(ld)
Therefore Allowable Bending Stress Fb = 22283.15 psi

b) Compression
Fc = 0.5 Fy = 18129.71 psi
Induced Stresses
fb =Mmax/Z = 3474.8 psi
fc = Na/As = 924.5 psi
Ratio of stresses induced to allowable stresses
fb + fc =
0.207
Fb Fc

As fb/Fb+fc/Fc<1 Ok
