ABAQUS 2D Raft Foundation Tutorial

This document provides instructions for numerically simulating a concrete raft foundation analysis using ABAQUS software. A 2D model is created consisting of a raft foundation part and a soil layer part. The aim is to calculate the settlement of a 12m x 0.8m raft under a uniform pressure of 80 kPa. The geometry, material properties, and sections are defined for the soil and concrete raft. The soil is modeled as elastic with a density of 2.0 ton/m3, Young's modulus of 10,000 kPa, and Poisson's ratio of 0.3. The concrete raft is modeled as elastic with a density of 2.4 ton/m3, Young's modulus of

Introduction

This example is intended to numerically simulate concrete raft foundation analysis

using ABAQUS software. The model consist of two part, the first one: raft
foundation ( Elastic) and the second one is soil layer .

Geometry

Using abaqus a 2D model was created with described table below

Type L W
Soil 30 m 30 m
Raft 12 m 0.8 m

Figure 3.

Select rectangular and then pick your coordinate

Enter (-15,-15) for the first corner and (15,15) for the second and close corner .

The final shape look like as shown in figure 3 above.

Continue to the next part and select (raft )with the same steps and enter new
coordinate (9,30) ( 21,30.5) for the first and second rectangular dimension
respectively and the final raft shape as shown in figure 4 below .

Property

In this example two types of material were used the input parameter for these
material were listed in table below :

Type Density Elastic. Poisson’s Ratio

Ton/m3 (Young’s modulus) V
KPa
Soil 2.0 10000 0.3
Concrete 2.4 20000000 0.2

In order to define the material property form Module -----Property

Select material property and start to define Soil properties by inserting

Density and Young modulus as shown in figure 5.

*From Mechanical ---Elasticity ---Elastic the Young and v were enterd.

The same steps are followed for the elastic part (raft) when defining the material
behavior which considered as concrete as shown in figure 6.

at this moment the two part need to create a section and assigned

these steps are presented by firstly create section with Solid and type
Homogeneous type for soil and raft concrete. Finally, select the material for each
type.

Upon clicking and finishing the creation of the two sections the user may assign
these sections for each part -For Soil Part-

The user should notice that color of original material will change to green by the
end of this process as an indication of material assignment .
