Remind messaging system is the easiest way to contact me after school hours. Students and parents can both utilize the
message system for class updates, assignment reminders, and to ask questions. Please see your handout for the class code.

Policies and Procedures
All school rules and policies will be followed in the classroom.
Daily Procedures- Students are expected to be in their seats with all of the required materials and ready to
work when the bell rings. Students who are tardy MUST obtain a tardy slip.
Students will quietly complete a bell ringer at the start of every class. Homework is due before the end of bell
ringer time.
Attendance- When a student is absent it is the responsibility of the student to get their make-up work. Students
can check the class website for the daily agenda and handouts. The make-up work folder in class will also
include all the handouts from the week and must be checked on the day that the student returns to school.
Students will be allotted one day per each day that was missed to complete the assignment. . Additional days
will be allotted for lengthy absences. Quizzes must be made up at lunch within one week of the missed date.
Missing Work- If a student fails to complete an in-class or homework assignment in order to receive partial
credit for the assignment the student must fill out a Pink (missing work) slip at the time when the
assignment is due.
Assignments can be submitted 1 day late for 75% credit, or 2 days late for 50% credit.
Bell-ringers will not be accepted late.
Fall 2019 10th Grade
Plagiarism- Plagiarism will NOT be tolerated. Students may only use the resources that are listed on each
assignment handout. Other online sources may not be used. All writing assignments will be submitted to
TurnItIn.com. Students that are found guilty of plagiarism will receive a zero for any assignments that are
plagiarized. Cheating will also not be tolerated. Students who cheat will receive a zero for the assignment, and
will receive detention.
Cell Phones/ Technology in the Classroom- Students will only be allowed to use cell phones and other
technology in the classroom for instructional purposes at the teacher’s discretion. Cell phones that are out
during non-designated times or cell phones that are used for non-instructional purposes will be confiscated.
1st offense - verbal/written warning
2nd offense - cell phone confiscated- loss of cell phone privileges- 1 week
3rd offense - To office and must be picked up by parent/ guardian - loss of cell phone
privileges- rest of the semester.

Be Prepared for Class
-Arrive to class on time with all required materials (including homework)
-Remain on task during class time
Follow Directions
- Students should only talk at necessary times to avoid disruption. These times include breaks
designated by the teacher, group work, discussion, or other times designated by the teacher
- In order to use the restroom students must sign out and obtain a hall pass.
- No food, drinks (with the exception of water), or backpacks in the classroom
- Raise your hand to ask a question.
- Cell phones can only be used for instructional purposes as designated by the teacher. If a student
misuses their cell phone, it will be confiscated.

Projects/Writing- 40%
There is one project or writing assignment Projects/ Writing
at the end of every unit. Independent novel 75-100 points
journals are also a semester long project.

Flash fiction writing
Novel- “Feed”
Macbeth play
Research paper- historical event or global issues
Independent novel- Students choose an independent novel of their choice to complete reading journals
and projects related to their novel.

Multi-Step Projects:
If students do not turn in assignments on the due date, they may be given lunch detention to make-
up the assignment.
See pg.16 in the student planner –Language arts department policy for more information.
Tutoring:
Lunch tutoring is available daily (with the exception of Tuesdays) in Mrs. Weddington’s room
during the first half of lunch (room 111) or Mrs. Dunkle’s room second half of lunch (room 110).
Extra Credit:
Extra credit opportunities will be available during the semester. Typically there is at least one extra
credit opportunity per unit. If students do not take advantage of these opportunities there will be no
additional extra credit available at the end of the semester.
10th Grade Learning Targets :
Students are required to use peer-reviewed documents that are found through Explora for research
assignments and be able to integrate information smoothly into their paper.
Student will utilize a variety of reading strategies such as close reading and annotation in order to
engage with challenging texts.
Students will be able to write a cohesive essay using complete introductions, conclusions, thesis
statements, and strong body paragraphs with transitions.
Students will expand their knowledge on poetic terms and devices previously learned in 9th grade.

Remind is a messaging system that easily allows students and parents to communicate with their teacher. I
highly recommend both students and parents to sign up to receive updates about class, reminders about
assignment due dates, and to message me any questions or concerns after school hours.
Students may earn 5 extra credit points for signing up for remind
Students may earn an additional 5 points (for a maximum of 10 points) if a parent/
guardian signs up for remind.
